ORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonThinking of retiring to Cornwall?Take a tip from me. The first thingyour Solicitor must obtain is aMining Report on yourprospective property… but moreof this later!
In asking me to review THEHAMMOND ZONE [DMRCD1006] featuring Peter Holt at the
B2X model, Ian was treading ondodgy ground because he knowsthat when it comes to jazz musicI don’t have the required depth ofknowledge to comment on thelikes of Wild Bill Doggett, JimmySmith, Rhoda Scott, JimmyMcGriff et al. Having beenassured by Ian this was not theusual kind of jazz trio… one onkeyboard, one on percussion, twoon cannabis and all three onprobation, I submitted to hispersuasive charms. At the backof my mind the name of Peter Holtrang a bell, and amongst theAshton Archives I came across anLP he made back in 1986 at theCompton organ that used toreside in the Three J’s LeisureCentre, Gomersall, until onefateful night when it would appearsomeone played with a box ofmatches. At the time Peter wasbut 12 years of age and hadrecently won the Young Organistof the Year competition staged bythe London Chapter of theAmerican Theatre Organ Society.A couple of years later he went tothe USA, entered the same
competition and became theYoung American Theatre organistof the Year, and by 1988, back inthe UK he became the YamahaElectone Festival winner. He laterjoined Hammond UK arrangingdealer promotions as well asconcertizing throughout Englandand Europe. The desire to enterthe treacherous world of Sales, hethen joined BMW and by 1997had been appointed as amanager for just one of theirexclusive 13 dealerships in thiscountry. He now runs his own carimport business, but continues totake a lot of interest in playingorgan. Unless I’m mistaken thisis his first recording on Hammond, and with the singular addition ofOliver Winder on drums, thishappens to be right up my street, except that is for the all too shortrunning time of 42 minutes. Theplaying is that lovely laid backtype… the sort which sticks closeto the written score instead ofgoing off in flights of musicalfantasy which only the purists canunderstand and appreciate.Commencing with UP, UP ANDAWAY, the Hammond throbs andstabs it’s way through 14 trackswith each and every one of thembeing more than familiar. Iparticularly enjoyed the treatmentof OL’ MAN RIVER, and with theAbba Musical pulling in thecrowds, what better inclusion thanSUPER TROUPER. Clearly thesetwo guys have a musical affinity, neither trying to out play eachother, and the recording engineerhas got the balance ‘twixt’ the twospot on. Other tracks range fromGershwin’s THEY CAN’T TAKETHAT AWAY FROM ME, throughto Michael Jackson’s I JUSTCAN’T STOP LOVING YOU,Stevie Wonder ’s ISN’T SHELOVELY and Michel Legrand’s IWILL WAIT FOR YOU coupledwith SWEET GINGERBREADMAN. Anyone who enjoys a well
played Hammond or even aHammond played well shouldlook no further than this recording.Sadly it’s time for me to switch offthe Leslie speaker and move onto the next offering.
Remaining with electronics I wasdelighted to receive a copy of IanDarlington’s latest offering, because due to the vagaries ofthe Turner’s Musical Merry-go-Round publicity machine, it’s alottery as to if and when I getanything from their artists. THEBEST OF IAN DARLINGTON[TMM 19CD] is a compilation of
old and new recordings, thoughno mention of this fact is evidenton the sleeve notes. Approx halfof the 17 tracks are new, and inthe shameful event that you don’thave any of his previousrecordings, this selection drawson his considerable expertise asa multi talented musician who isequally at home knocking sevenbells out of a set of tuned timpaniin the superbly arranged big bandTRIBUTE TO ERIC DELANEY:flexing his trumpet blowing cheekmuscles in ANGEL IN BLUE ortaking off the legendary Phil Harriswith the tongue twistingDARKTOWN POKER CLUB. Themainstay of the recording is theYamaha HX1 and the overallprogramme content comprises ofsome well known film themesLAWRENCE OF ARABIA / THEGREAT ESCAPE / TARA’S

ORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonTHEME FROM GONE WITH THEWIND and the WARSAWCONCERTO and THE DREAMOF OLWEN. From the classicalrepertoire there is Verdi’s GRANDMARCH from AIDA / TRISTESSE(SO DEEP IS THE NIGHT) byChopin and a finale of tunesarranged by Henry Wood underthe title of THE LAST NIGHT OFTHE PROMS. With so manyartists including the James Lastcomposition THE LONELYSHEPHERD there is very little tochoose between successiveversions, but like WITHOUT YOU/ WHEN WILL YOU TELL METHAT YOU LOVE ME and A BOYFROM NOWHERE, it helps topad out a nice selection ofromantic melodies, whilstTEQUILA and THE BIRDCAGEWALK add a touch of light heartedfrippery to a faultless album fromone of our most popular all roundkeyboard artists.
Surprise, surprise (with apologiesto our Cilla!) Turner’s have alsoreleased THE BEST OFNICHOLAS MARTIN Vol.1[TMM18CD] and as one would
expect he’s seated at the consoleof their lovely WurliTzer. Theformat is the same as his musicalcolleague Ian Darlington: that ofa compilation of tracks going backover the years of his longresidency there… 16 years to beprecise. Can it be THAT longsince I stood in the Merry-go-
Round building when it had butjust four walls and a very largeand empty organ chamber? Overthe years the entertainmentconcept there has undergone lotsof changes, and some of theoriginal attractions, fairgroundorgans and such like have beensold or placed in storage. Happilyfor most people Nicholas Martinhasn’t been placed in storage, and the WurliTzer is maintainedin top broadcasting and recordingcondition. You only have to listento track eight when it enduresseveral minutes of punishment!.With my vast collection of organrecordings still packed in boxesfollowing the relocation toCornwall, I can’t say with anydegree of accuracy how old someof the tracks are, nor from whichoriginal recordings… and despiteplenty of space to do so on thesleeve notes, Turner’s are notletting on either! What I can sayis that it includes some tracks fromhis tribute to Reginald Dixonrelease. Mind you, most of Nick’splaying is an ongoing tribute tothat great artist. For instance IKISS YOUR HAND MADAMEwhich Reg always dedicated tohis wife Vera: a typical three partmedley in the form of BOO HOO/ THE WORLD IS WAITING FORTHE SUNRISE / THE BESTTHINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE: oneof his most frequented musicalshow pieces STORM AT SEA andthe frenetic manual to manual‘chopping’ show stopper 12THSTREET RAG. theaforementioned Track eight…though in fairness dear old Regnever abused his organ, if you’llpardon the expression, by playingat the speed of light. With a coupleof lengthy items, namely aselection from ME & MY GIRL,and tunes that will have somepeople dusting off their campaignmedals whilst they enjoy the WARTIME medley. Come to think of it,
listening to the DAMBUSTERSreminds me that I better polish mybrasses or else I’ll find myself ona 252 charge, or as it was morecommonly known, a ‘fizzer’. Othertracks include LEGEND OF THEGLASS MOUNTAIN / TICO TICO/ DANCING QUEEN / FIDDLEFADDLE / MY HEART WILL GOON / NO MATTER WHAT. Fromthe titles of both these Turner’sreleases it would appear that theirintention is to release furthercompilations, but I cannot believethat either of these artists haverun out of new things to offer thepublic. Not that I’m suggesting itto be the case in question here, but compilations are, no matterhow they are packaged, cheaplyproduced souvenirs, oftenresulting in the artists getting paidnot a penny more.
As if to make the point aboutcheaply produced compilations, attached to the next CD was anote that suggested I might liketo dig out my John Travolta white
suit to wear whilst I listened to agroup with the un-inspiring title ofThe Hammond Set. Firstly awarning to those of you with longmemories and extensive recordcollections. The artists (whoeverthey might be!) are not the sameHammond Set that recorded onthe old Jerry Allen Alamo label…for that WAS Jerry himself frontingthose sessions. Secondly this isa compilation of tracks from at
8
ORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan Ashtonleast two, possibly even threedifferent recordings, and one ofthem has a distinctive Europeanstyle of playing and sound to it.Thirdly some of the tracks onNIGHT FEVER [CD 6026] maywell have you retiring to your bedwith a similar induced attack! Tobe fair I have heard a lot worse, and there are many WorkingMens Club organ and drumscombo’s that are better. Themajority of the tracks do have agood strong beat to them, but theHammond player(s) I wouldstress are not world class. Moststick to a single tone colourthroughout each track, but I swearone of them is using both handsfrom time to time. Just as he getsright into the swing of things withsome nimble finger dexterity, thesound engineer fades him out, robbing us of a chance to hear ifwe have a Klaus Wunderlich inthe making! In total there are 24tracks ranging from the titlethrough RASPUTIN / ROSE /BRIGHT EYES /HEARTBREAKER / STAYIN’ALIVE / WHERE DID OUR LOVEGO and VIDEO KILLED THERADIO STAR… but unfortunatelynot the organist. The best tracksfrom the sound and playing pointof view commence at No.16…and in fact the Roaring Twentiesarrangement of WINCHESTERCATHEDRAL is one of the bestI’ve heard for a long while. A nicestereo mix with trumpet and honkytonk piano on the left channel andorgan on the right. Summing up, Ican only suggest that ifSanatogen want to sponsor anOver 60’s line dance contest, theyneed look no further for the music.
In my years of residence in theManchester area I recall a numberof occasions when I journeyeddown to the Davenport theatre,Stockport, to record organists formy radio programme, amongst
them being Robinson Cleaver,George Blackmore and on oneoccasion the legendary HectorOlivera. Today, as I listen to thoserecording they prove that despiteit’s average size, the Comptonthat so admirably filled the theatrewas capable of considerably morethan is contained on this CD, withthe exception of the live concertextracts featuring Simon Gledhill. To the minds of many people, myself included, it was sacrilegeto demolish this lovely, luxuriouslyappointed theatre, in 1997.Thankfully the organ has beensaved and will no doubt onceagain sound forth in an auditoriumof some kind or another, but forsouvenir hunters THAT’S ALL[LTOT 991] presents nineorganists putting the instrument
through it’s paces for the very lasttime in it’s former home. Residentfor so many years was JoyceAlldred who, in the height of theirfashion raised the organ, and withit the testosterone levels of themale members of the audience, wearing hot pants… not a seat inthe front three rows to be had! Hercontributions open the CD andinclude THEATRELAND andTHESE FOOLISH THINGS, bothby the well known composer JackStrachey. Next comes MichaelHolmes, the last resident organistwith A NIGHTINGALE SANG INBERKELEY SQUARE and withshades of nearby Blackpool, themarch GOLDEN MILE by Horatio
Nicholls. Many years ago theAmerican based ConcertRecording outlet produced an LPand a quarter inch reel to reel tapeversion of Bolton organist RonaldCurtis playing this Compton andwhich by all accounts, proved tobe their best selling release. Ronwas often referred to as theCompton King and LOVE IS,being one of his most requesteditems, is but one of three cutsincluded from that long agodeleted recording. The highlight ofthe CD has to be the artistry ofSimon Gledhill who has, deservedly so, the lions share ofthe CD with a brilliant display ofjust what can be obtained from sixranks of pipes… and no chancefor retakes! BODY & SOUL / ACOLE PORTER POTPOURRIand the delightful Roger Quiltercomposition WILL O’ THE WISPform his ‘live concert’ contribution.Nigel Ogden was one of manyorganists who were grantedaccess to the instrument in theirrespective formative playing days. The CD closer finds Nigelexploiting the organ in ‘straight’mood with THE DAY THOUGAVEST , but earlier tracks findhim in equally contrasting moodwith Bert Keampfert’s LASVEGAS and Franz Lehar ’sWALTZ FROM THE COUNT OFLUXEMBOURG. The unlikelycombination of cinema projectionand dentistry are the backgroundto Charles Brown who polishesivories of a some what larger andmore uniform shape withFOXTROT and OLDFAVOURITES medleys, played inthe style which earned him manyadmirers when also acting asrelief organist there. Organist JeffBarker is the first to agree that hiscontributions, recorded when hewas a mere slip of a lad, are notthose that are representative ofhis style or playing ability today, and one wonders why, with so
9
ORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan Ashtonmuch better material of his beingreadily available, efforts were notmade to include it. That said,WHEN YOU’RE COUNTING THESTARS ALONE is one of theartists favourite tunes and showsjust how well that organ recordedin the early days of bulky reel toreel tape machines and hastilyerected microphones. Just onetrack is devoted to relativenewcomer, young Joanne Godleyand for one brief moment duringher performance of LONDON BYNIGHT, I thought she hadmanaged to get the ComptonMelotone division operativeagain. The last organist is KevinGrunhill, who visitors to Blackpoolmight have heard playing in theNorth Pier Sun Lounge, the oncerevered spot occupied byRaymond Wallbank. Hiscontribution includes a three partWALTZ MEDLEY comprising oftunes that echo thoughts for thefuture of the instrument are I’LLSEE YOU AGAIN / THAT’S ALL /NOW IS THE HOUR. With aninformative, illustrated bookletdetailing the history of the organ, the theatre and mini bi-ogs of theartists, this is a superb musicalmemory of a sparky littleCompton, and it certainly makesa change to hear an example ofthe British firm of organ builders.
As one organ disappeared at oneend of Stockport Town, anotherand even bigger one was beingassembled at the other! The
famous and imposing Town Hallwas the site of the thrice travelledorgan, ex Odeon Manchester /Free Trade Hall Opus 2120 4/20WurliTzer. Produced as asouvenir to herald the opening ofthe organ in late 1999, the CDANOTHER OP’NING [LTOT 991]comprises of half previouslyreleased tracks of the organ as itwas in it’s two former homes, andeight new ones recorded atStockport Town Hall especially forthis release. The former are neatlylinked together by the briefest ofdetails spoken by Nigel Ogden, whilst the latter are pure music allthe way. Thus if you had anydoubts as to the tonal progress ofthe organ throughout its 69 yearsof life, this recording sets out toshow the improvements in thehands of such luminaries asMessrs Broadbent, Croudson,Smitton, Lord, Wright, Rawle,Olivera, Davies, Ogden, andFenelon. That the first four namesare no longer around to add theremusical skills to the newinstallation is of great regret, fortheir likes will never be heardagain. For this debut recording ofthe organ as it now stands to beheard, it is down to Nigel Ogden& Tony Fenelon, an all tooinfrequent visitor to these shores,to share the honours. Betweenthem they have chosen 8 itemswhich cover everything from themarch THE GREAT LITTLEARMY, to the Buddy Colecomposition of SASSY BRASS.With so many artists it’simpossible to list all thecontributions but I feel I do haveto single out Ernest Broadbentwith a selection from THE GYPSYPRINCESS by Kalman, the spinetingling mellifluous playing ofMEMORIES OF YOU by EricLord, and Charles Smitton: a manwho was an absolute mine ofmusical knowledge and whocould have doubtless won a round
on Mastermind on the givensubject, with his version of the oldAlbert Ketelby classic, IN APERSIAN MARKET PLACE.Doubtless there are manyorganists already (a) asking torecord the new installation (b)waiting to be invited to or (c)resigning themselves to the factthat they will never record orconcertize on it. We musttherefore await with baited breaththe chosen few. Such is the wayof the organ world, sad to say.
What a great disappointment tolearn that the legendary LennyDee will not, after all, be coming
to the UKin May. Itw o u l da p p e a rthat hehad topull out ofa recentc r u i s e
ship engagement due to healthproblems. Few people in the UKhave been lucky enough to seethis amazingly funny organist inconcert, but now you can enjoythe next best thing with thepurchase of GOLDEN ORGANMEMORIES, a double CDcontaining a selection of some ofhis many recordings made in alifetime of playing the Hammondorgan. In the Winter of 1999 anAmerican organ publicationcarried his advert for the sale ofthe original, personally custom-built (modified, midi’d and digitalecho) Hammond B 3000. Open tooffers the purchaser will alsoreceive a custom plaque andpersonal autograph asprovenance. As he rightly says “inall the world there’s only one - andit kicks like a mule”. If you’ve gotthe bucks to purchase I’ve got adirect line to him, but I figure thebids will have already revealedthe lucky owner.

ORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonIf you like to make comparisonsthen an excellent opportunityawaits you with two recordingsproduced by the North EastTheatre Organ Association, whichfor space reasons will be referredto from hereon as the NETOA. Iwould stress that neither of therecordings are brand new, one isfrom 1996 and the other five yearsbefore that. How come? Not allpreservation groups sell on theirrecordings to commercial outlets, after all it is the interests of thegroup to retain the financialrewards ‘in house’ so to speak. But certainly when concert andartist sales have slacked off itdoes seem a good idea to makethem more readily available to awider audience. Such then is thecase with IT’S DE-LOVELY[CDHLW 1002] featuring
Tyneside organist Joe Marsh, andA DECADE OF DELIGHTS[CDHLW 1004] when NigelOgden is to be found seated atthe 3 manual 12 rank WurliTtzerin the New Victoria Centre, CoDurham. Mention of comparisonsdoes not mean I’m going to ‘playoff’ against each other the artisticmerits of both organists. In factthere is simply nothing to choosebetween either, and in the caseof the Joe Marsh recording he hadone rank of pipes less at hisdisposal. Nigel of course needsno introduction, but perhaps a fewwords about Joe Marsh’sbackground would not go amiss,
as he is not as prolific a recordingartist and in any case, has a dayjob as a Chartered Accountant, which does tend to bring him in alittle more money than playingorgan concerts! The son of afamous organ builder andprofessional musician, Joe Jnrcommenced like so manymusically minded people, on thepiano, and later turned to the pipeorgan making his first broadcastat aged 15. On this, the formerNew Victoria, Bradford organ, Joetreats the listener to a simplybeautiful, melodic and wellthought out programme of items.Included are three nice longselections from film and stageproductions STAR / GYPSY andTOP HAT. In these three tracksalone Joe provides an everchanging panoply of sound whichat times is very Americanised, helped in no small measure by theexpert tuning of NETOA organtechnician Paul Reamsbottom. Inthe main the programme has anice restful and melodic laid backfeel to it, but when needs be Joeopens up the swell shutters andgives the organ a super rhythmicwork out with items like the marchOUT OF THE BLUE / WALKIN’MY BABY BACK HOME /LIECHTENSTEINER POLKA /CHEROKEE and THERE’S ATRICK IN PICKIN’ A CHICK-CHICK-CHICKEN.
Moving on to the second CD,Nigel too has chosen a
programme that is wide in choice, and as always, faultless inexecution. I particularly likedhearing the full version of thetheme music from MURDER ONTHE ORIENT EXPRESS, a touchof the light classics with aselection from DIEFLEDERMAUS, and the never tobe forgotten melodies from THEVAGABOND KING, by RudolphFriml. One tune I haven’t for manya long year is ON THE AIR, thesnappy signature tune thatheralded the radio broadcasts ofthe late band leader and pianistCarroll Gibbons. Two items,WHEN I SEE YOU and THELADY SEEKS ROMANCE arefrom the respective pens oforganists Dudley Savage and thelate Louis Mordish. Kicking off theCD is THEATRELAND, anevocative variety show musicalprelude if I ever I heard one, whilstmid-way through it’s turn back theclock time to the days of puppetmaker Gerry Anderson and hisfamous THUNDERBIRDS theme. From around that same era Nigelhas included a five partSWINGING SIXTIES medleywhich includes the ever popularPetula Clark hit DOWNTOWN:Englebert Humperdinks THELAST WALTZ and Simon &Garfunkals MRS ROBINSON.The CD ends with an off the cufffiller in the form of HAPPYBIRTHDAY, the occasion beingthe 10th Anniversary of theinstallation of the organ. If youthink that over seven minutes is abit OTT for such a short tune thenbe prepared to enjoy it’s simplicityin a variety of extemporisations. Both these CDs from the NETOAhave a lot to offer in the way ofvariety, style and content.
That well travelled mastermusician Len Rawle has justreleased a cracking little gem ofa CD. The operative word in this
11
ORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan AshtonORGANISED KEYBOARDS by Alan Ashtoncase being ‘little’ because theorgan has only 2 manuals and 6ranks of pipes… commonlyknown as a Style D modelWurliTzer and which made it’spublic debut back in the mid1920’s in the Palace Theatre,Tottenham, being only the secondWurliTzer to arrive in the UK, butwas the 999th to leave the NorthTonawanda factory. In the late50’s it began to enjoy a new leaseof life in the Thomas PeacockeSchool in Rye, where it can beheard to this day. To be fair a lotof work is required to bring theorgan up to full operationalcondition, but with a £9,500Lottery funding awarded in 1997this will enable the ongoingprogramme of restoration to putback such important performernecessities as pistons for stopcontrol and the all importantsecond touch. Tonally thepipework is a joy to listen to and italready benefits from a DigitalTransmission system, areplacement Glockenspiel and ana MIDI connection facility - hencewhat you will hear on RAWLEPLAYS RYE [PRS 0031] is an
unusually nice mix of theatrepipes and Yamaha HS8. Not alltracks have this mix, some arejust pure vintage WurliTzersounds: the Diapason, Salicional,Flute, Vox Humana & Tibia forinstance. There is only one thingthat I feel should have received alot more attention, especially with
the emphasis of the recordingbeing a Fund Raising exercise. Not being one to mince words, thecover design and sleeve notes arevery amateurish. The shot of Lenleaning nonchanently on theconsole gives the impression thatthe organ is a tiny scale model, such is the disproportionate ratioof man to his organ (if you’llpardon the analogy) ...which infact it is, being a carnival floatcentrepiece constructed ofcardboard and sporting one extramanual than the Rye organ isfitted with! With two whole insidecovers of the CD being blank, Iam also at a loss to understandwhy good use of this space couldnot have been taken up with amore comprehensive history ofthe organ, and maybe even a fewnotes on the actual recordingsession itself. For instance, nowhere on the CD does itprominently state the reason forthe addition of the Yamaha. Arethey solo electronic tracks: werethey dubbed on at a later studiosession or were they recorded atthe same time? The Friend’s ofthe Rye WurliTzer, the local bodywho are charged with therestoration, do need seriously toevaluate the importance ofcomplimenting 100%, the effortsof future recording artists, as wellas making sleeve shots appealingand eye catching. (Since writingthis review I know that Len hasnow supplied informative sleevenotes in the hopes that these canbe printed on the blank pages ofall copies sold in the future) Somusic wise, what does the CDoffer the listener? For starters awell thought out programme, played in a style that, with theoccasional addition of theYamaha, gives the impressionthat the organ is much larger andtonally comprehensive than itreally is, but without detracting toomuch from it’s lovely original
sound. These are the parameterswhich Len set out to achieve, andachieve them he has. From an 18track programme let me extractand comment upon some of myfavourite moments. First off isTHE NAUGHTY WALTZ, anumber which I first heard the lateRobin Richmond play and recordon Hammond, on the Polygonlabel many many years ago. However, upon listening to Len’sversion, one of the tracks withYamaha embellishments, thesound is a dead ringer of that ofthe late Ken Griffin playing aprototype electronic Orgatron…the WurliTzer answer to theHammond. With the electronicpiano, and a discrete battery ofLatin American instruments,WHAT IS THIS THING CALLEDLOVE, has all the trappings of aGeorge Wright arrangement, andthe chart topping ballad by PeterSkellern YOU’RE A LADYdemonstrates most of theaforementioned vintage pipework, including the Vox Humana: therank of pipes said to emulate thehuman voice. Two tunes thatmight need some explanation(this where informative sleevenotes would have been beneficial)are TANZENDE FINGER POLKAand IK HOU van HOLLAND.According to Len the former waswritten as an Harmonica solo andthe later is one of the Netherlandsmost popular tango’s. The first fewopening notes of FRIENDS TOTHE END will remind you of Eric& Ernie ending their shows withthe similar sounding TWO OF AKIND, whilst ALOHA CHA, with alittle help from some Yamaha FX,transports you effortlessly to thebeautiful Hawaiian Islands. Othertracks include: NESSUN DORMA/ JAMBALAYA / WHO WANTS TOBE A MILLIONAIRE /MORNINGS AT SEVEN /GEORGIA ON MY MIND. The CDcloser is the march HIGH

SCHOOL CADETS and Iguess this is the one trackwhen you realise just hownecessary it was to havethe Yamaha to hand inorder to make up for all themissing non-tonalpercussions. After all, withonly the WurliTzerglockenspiel and a triangleat his disposal, Len couldhave hardly pulled off thisfamous Sousa compositionwithout some electronicassistance. At the risk ofrepeating my openingremarks, this is a little gemof a recording which yourpurchase of will directlyhelp ensure the long termfuture of a very historicinstrument. In a world whensize seems to matter inmost all things, let us notforget that this small, pioneering example ofWurliTzer craftsmanship, deserves a place amidstthe ranks of ‘big brothers’that we tend to hear somuch more about.
Now, back to the miningreport on your prospectiveproperty! The cost is £47and could well save youmany hundreds of poundsas in our case when mywife and I discovered threedays before travelling downto St. Austell that the housewe had made an offer onwas sitting slap bang ontop of disused mineworkings. Both the vendorand the estate agentappeared to know nothingof this! A quick retraction ofour offer saw us movinginto our temporaryaccommodation while wewent house hunting yetagain and these reviewssee me, not in sight of the
sea as hoped, but deadcentre of Bodmin… with aview across the cemeteryto be precise. Movinghouse is, next to divorce, considered the moststressful time of one’s lifeand I should know cos’ I’venow sampled both. It’s atime fraught with tensionand inevitably there wereheated exchanges andafter one name callingsession I had no alternativebut to go up in the loft andlook for my birth certificate!.On the professional side ofthings the distancebetween me and the MSSbunker is now threefold, but recordings keep on acoming, and once I can findmy modem, still elusivelypacked, I will once again beable to send and receiveemail, for without it I dreadto think the cost of thephone calls to Gerry andIan!
Well my luvvlies (notice theuse of the venacular) it’stime to sign off. Fingerscrossed the next edition ofthe column should comefrom our new house. TheMining Search has shownthat the house is standingon bed rock, well clear ofany prospective holes andthe bricks that it’s built withdo not contain anydeleterious properties. I’mnow off to the local cattleauction to buy a couple ofsheep having just found outthat the garden is 150 feetlong by 72 feet wide… well, with the tumbling price oflivestock these days it’scheaper than buying a lawnmower, and you can’t beatlamb chops with mintsauce.

Thank you to everyone whoreturned their questionnaire andwe thought we would share someof the more interesting parts of itwith you (and some of the lessinteresting parts too!)
We asked you to rate ournewsletter’s value for money outof 5. The result averaged out atjust over 4.6 (which was nice toknow).
Our average reader is 66 yearsold (the ages ranged from 25 to92). Other statistics showed that77% of people listen to “TheOrganist Entertains” on RadioTwo, 22% of people own acomputer and 51% attend localorgan concerts.
As for the ‘style’ of organ musicpeople like, the answers were asfollows:
Electronic Organ 87%Theatre Organ 64%Hammond Jazz 33%
Before you grab your calculators,we know these do not total 100%,but many people like more thanone style.
36% of our customers listen toorgan music but do not play theorgan. However over half do ownand play an organ (as opposedto a keyboard or piano).
71% find the music in ournewsletter ‘of interest’, althoughsome did comment that it was alittle on the hard side. We realisethat the recent pieces by ChihoSunamoto and John Beesley mayhave been a little “taxing”, but youdo get three months to practisebefore you get another piece andwe don’t want you to get boredwith easy pieces you havemastered in ten minutes. Somepeople did suggest we include‘easy play’ music, but we cannotreally include this as well as theother arrangement due to lack of
space (and cost) and most peopledo seem to prefer the trickierpieces.
The things people wanted us toadd to our newsletter varied frommore cassettes to organminidiscs!
93% of our customers buy CD’s,but less than 5% of peopleactually said they ONLY boughtcassettes and not CD’s (althoughover 50% of people still buycassettes and CD’s). This seemsto prove that most people try toget the CD, but if that’s notavailable then the cassette willdo.
Most people seem to want moreorgan videos and we wouldcertainly like to get more, but wehave all that we can get at themoment. It would be great to seea professionally shot video of amajor organ festival with variousorganists playing a few trackseach. A few people asked for aKlaus Wunderlich video, but toour knowledge there has neverbeen one available.
Some people suggested weshould have reviews of organs, but this is covered by othermagazines. A few other peoplesuggested profiles of “organistsof yesteryear” which we hadalready been thinking about andmay cover in the future (anysuggestions or information aboutthis would be welcome).
Another addition asked for was areaders letters page which wassomething we did “kick off” inissue two. Unfortunately, no-oneseemed to want to “kick it back”and it died a death due to lack ofresponse. If anyone would like towrite in with comments on theirfavourite CD’s then we may beable to resurrect it. How aboutcommenting on your favouriteLP’s which you would like to see
re-released on CD?
As far as the comments go, theywe all very pleasing to read. Wedid not have a single person whotold us they disliked ournewsletter and most people seemto think we have the balancepretty much right.
We received many votes for yourfavourite organists from ourwebsite and newsletter polls. There were votes for 140 differentorganists and here are the thirtymost popular (the newsletter andwebsite votes have beencombined):

Ian Wolstenholme Interviews Lenny Dee
At the time of this interview(late 1999) Lenny Deesounded as cheerful andas healthy as thephotograph would seem toindicate - albeit taken a fewyears ago! Plans had beenfinalised for hisappearance at theKeyboard Cavalcadefestival in Blackpool thisMay and I think it’s fair tosay that the whole UKorgan industry (certainlyHammond) was gearingitself for something ratherspecial.
Around Christmas timeLenny developed severerheumatism following a leginfection picked up in thehot spa on a cruise liner.Clearly this has madeplaying the organextremely difficult and, taking into considerationage and medical advice, the decision is that Lennyshould not risk the trip toBritain at this time.
IW: W e l c o m eLenny. As I’vepreviously mentionedon this programme, even if you don’tparticularly enjoy organmusic, chances arethat, at the very least, you’ll have heard ahandful of “names” likeKlaus Wunderlich,Reginald Dixon and, ofcourse, Lenny Dee.How does that makeyou feel to have somany people respectyou as a musician?
LD: Ian, it makesme feel just great! I
never really listen to anyorganist’s style; I just kinda gotmy own style with a beat.Luckily, it was different from themainstream, was noticed andcaught on with listeners.
IW: Let’s go back to your earlyroots Lenny. What first attractedyou to that famous Hammondsound?
LD: Well, I was in a Catholicchurch choir and in 1933 whenthe Hammond organ came out, they brought one over to thechurch as a demonstrationmachine for the choir to use andwow I was hooked! We’d notheard a thing like it and I knewthat this was what I wanted touse. Then there was aplayer in the UnitedStates called MiltHearth; he had afifteen-minute radioshow featuring theHammond organand I guess that hewas an inspiration tome too.
IW: Okay then, a newinstrument, new sound; howeasy or difficult was it for youngLenny Dee to become noticed?
LD: It was pure luck Ian likemany things in the musicbusiness. I was in the rightplace at the right time. In about’48 or ’49, I was playing in asupper club in Nashville,Tennessee with artists likeAnita Kirsingers and ChetAtkins and a visit by countrystar Red Foley became a majorturning point in my career. Heenjoyed what I did andconvinced Decca to sign me totheir label.
IW: You wouldn’t see it toomuch these days, but in the1950’s and 60’s, whatever thevocal pop hits of the day were, there was always Lenny Deewaiting to do an instrumentalcover version. Did you havemuch say in what you recordedor was it strictly controlled bythe record companies that youdealt with Lenny?
LD: Well Ian, I did have quitea bit of freedom with the musicbut of course I was expectedto include many organ hits onthe albums just like otherorganists who were on thesame bandwagon! This is whatthe record-buying public of thetime wanted.
IW: Wasn’t it truealso Lenny, that inthe late 1960’syou receivedmore radioairplay in Americathan even ourfamous group the
Beatles?
Ian Wolstenholme Interviews Lenny Dee

LD: I was shocked to hearthat! I think it was UniversalStudios or MCA that took asurvey in what wasdescribed as “musak” and Iused to get calls from peoplewho were familiar with mymusic and who had travelledback from Japan or Europe, only to hear it being pipedfrom overhead speakers inmost of the US airportterminals!
IW: Let’s bring things up todate. What occupies LennyDee at the moment?
LD: I’m now 38 twice andreally don’t have anythingleft to prove! I still doconcerts and promotions forHammond and I’ve got anew double CD, which Iguess is available inEngland. I’m also gettingready to perform on some ofthe beautiful cruise shipsthat come out of SouthFlorida which I’m real excitedabout. There’s also talk thatI may get over to the UKsometime in the New Year.

Profile of Byron Jones “The Welsh Wizard”Profile of Byron Jones “The Welsh Wizard”Byron Jones wasborn in Risca,South Wales andwas playing hisG r a n d m o t h e r spiano by the age offour. He had his firstpiano lesson at theage of six, which hewas not too keenon at first. Later onhe got the chanceto play theharmonium whenhis local Sundayschool asked him toplay for their events.
When he was ten a friend ofhis grandmother gave him aharmonium which had to bekept at his grandmothershouse as there was no roomat his. This meant a three milecycle ride each day after schoolso he could practice!
While he was still at school hegot a paper round to continuehis piano lessons. When he leftschool his first job was as atrainee projectionist at the localOdeon Cinema. When the localMiners’ Club in Risca had aHammond Organ installed hewas taken under the wing ofRex Griffiths whoinstalled the organ.Rex had just openeda shop in theValleys at Blainacalled Foxes ofDoncaster. Sixweeks laterByron wasemployed at the clubplaying the backgroundmusic on the Hammond (at theage of sixteen). After sixmonths another club offeredhim £4.00 per night to play for
them. His father (who was aforeman in the pits) was onlytaking home about £30.00 perweek, so £4.00 per night wasan offer he couldn’t refuse.
His next job required him toplay modern and sequencedancing and this lead tobookings at dance schools allover South Wales. Then camea job at Merthyr Tydfil wherehe played for professionalsingers and cabaret acts whocame straight from theatressuch as the London Palladium.During this time he played forDorothy Squires, Ruby Murray,Donald Peers, Bert Weedon,Ann Shelton, Kenny Ball,Norman Collier, Dicky
Valentine and many more.
His first summerseason was at
The Vine Hotel,Chapel St. Leonards
(near Skegness). Thetwelve sessions a
week was certainly amarathon and upon
returning home hereceived a call from a singercalled Allun Davies, who hadjust won Opportunity Knocks.
Allun asked him toplay for him one nightand the one nightbooking went on tolast 22 years!
After this, Cled Griffininvited him to play atBarton Hall, Torquayand by now he wasstarting to break intothe entertainmentside of the organscene. When hestarted at Barton Hallhe was an unknown,
but within a year he wasstarting to make a name forhimself and then the B.M.S.(Byron’s Music Society) wasformed. The society has nowbeen around for sixteen yearsand is still growing! The societysends out a quarterly
newsletter, with every membergetting a birthday andChristmas card (and a ‘get well’card if they are in hospital) andnot forgetting… a badge! Forthe last fifteen years he hashosted the B.M.S. at Malvern, where he used to play theRushworth & Draper organ at

Festival bookings started togrow and the late Roy Nealcalled to asked him to play forhim at Caister. He billed him as
the “The Welsh Wizard” andever since Terry Ahearn hasbeen organising him, it hasbeen his registered trade mark.
Byron now organises his ownfestivals and concerts, including “Music For All” whichhas included such guestartistes as Brian Sharp, JeanMartyn, Michael Brent, PennyWeedon and Peter Hayward.Byron and Peter have madetwo cassettes, a CD and avideo featuring Byron on Wersiand Peter on piano. big pipe organs. He finds thepeople out there very open toorgan music.
There are certain highlightsin Byrons career; one was inMarch 1991 when he put ona weekend with KlausWunderlich at Pontin’s,Osmington Bay (inconjunction with Klaus’Appreciation Society). Klauswas not too forthcoming atfirst, but they soon got toknow each other and got onvery well. Klaus would oftenask when he was comingover for a holiday, but heregrets that he never did goover to visit him and his wife.He regarded Klaus as a veryspiritual person and he thinksthey got on so well becausethey never discussed music- Klaus said there was moreto life than just playing theorgan.
Another highlight was playingthe the Blackpool TowerWurlitzer. It was a dreamcome true when he finallymade a video on that veryorgan.
Recently Byron bought athree-manual Compton pipeorgan and will eventuallymove to a house big enoughto accommodate it. He isstill playing Wersi, butsoon it will be thenew “Da Vinci”model, so hisfans canlook forwardto even morenew sounds inthe future!

For those of usgrowing up in thefifties and sixties
who developed a life long love ofthe theatre organ, there is onename that stands out larger thanlife influencing an entire generationof organists and organ enthusiasts- George Wright! It has been thedream for many of us to be able topractice and perform on aninstrument for the home thatsounded like the George Wrightrecording organ.
Only with the coming of Allen'sRenaissance™ technology has thisbeen made possible. Allen OrganCompany approached George withthe concept of digitally replicatinghis Hollywood Philharmonic Organ, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Allen Organ went to George’shome located in the Hollywood Hillssection of Los Angeles, Californiato digitally sample his HollywoodPhilharmonic Recording Organ. They painstakingly recorded everyrank in the organ with bothtremulants off and tremulants on toinsure the absolute accuracy of notonly individual ranks but theessence of the theatre organ, accurate tremulants. The ranks ofthe GW319 and its “big brother” theGW4 (the four manual GeorgeWright Signature Series organ) arethe result of those recordings andtremulant samplings.

We try to stock as many organ recordingsas possible, however some artists whoproduce their own CD’s do not want tosell them to third parties (although manyof these organists do sell to us).
Certain organists want control of theirown recordings and will only sell them attheir concerts or by mail-order.
We are always looking for new organCD’s and videos, so please contact us ifyou have any. We only advertise andpromote the recordings which we stock.
