Capital Improvement Plan

and Our Capital Campaign

Did you know that in 2013 BSUMC, led by our Trustees, finished the construction of our new organ? Or that we replaced the leaking roof on our fellowship hall? Or that we repaired a faulty chimney on our parsonage?

Did you know that in 2014 we plan to fix a chronic flooding issue in our choir room? Or that we will repave the wobbly brick sidewalk outside our sanctuary? Or that we will replace our inoperable sound system for the hearing impaired in our sanctuary? Or that we will replace our aging van that transports our youth and others?

Our church facility is valued at over $11 million and is used every day by members of our church and many others in our community. In order to keep this house of God in the best shape it can be to support our ministries, it needs constant maintenance. To neglect it would be a failure of responsibility. Last year, BSUMC’s Administrative Board authorized the opening of a line of credit to fund this work. Our debt is currently $550,000. It will grow larger as we continue to make necessary repairs and improvements this year.

In order to pay down this debt, in December of 2013, we launched our capital campaign: Laying a Foundation for the Future. You will be hearing more about the campaign in May, as we continue our efforts to care for God’s church.

Monday Night Supper

Mission Sunday Come and join the fun in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, May 25, as we meet together to

assemble Kits for Conference and make Vacation Bible School decorations! All

materials will be provided, but we need lots of hands! If you attend 8:30 or 11:00 services, come during Sunday School. If you attend

9:45, come at 11:00. There will be plenty to do!

Society of St. Andrew Area Gleaning Update “Wanted to send the snapshot from Wednesday’s gleaning operation.

You helped provide 4,600# of beautiful apples to 13 area pantries. These

were some of the best I have

seen. This amounts to 13,000

servings of food you helped

provide. Thanks again, Betty

Heishman.” Kudos to BSUMC

members Jim Green and Rick

and Susan Creasy for their

regular attendance and

assistance with gleaning.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE OTHERS THIS SUMMER:

THE MONDAY NIGHT SUPPER KITCHEN CREWS

SUMMER MNS DATES JULY 7, 14, 21, & 28

AUGUST 4, 11, 18, & 25

This July and August, BSUMC’s Kitchen Manager, Darry Milanov, will continue in the kitchen preparing the food for our Monday Night Suppers while most members of the

“regular” Kitchen Crews will be stepping back from their duties.

This being said, a wonderful opportunity of service to our community becomes available to you! Darry and a member from one of the “regular” Kitchen Crews will lead you through the cleaning and setting of tables, the final preparation of food,

setting up the serving line, and setting up the plate scraping and dishwashing stations.

To sign up, go to the church website, braddockstreetumc.org, and click on “Contact Us,” then “Summer MNS Sign Up.” It is a great way to get involved in the life of this church! Crew members need to be 18 years of age or older to operate the

dishwasher. Start time is around 4:30 PM and crew members usually leave the kitchen by 7:15 PM. If you have any questions, please contact

Megan Pugh @662-4738 or [email protected].

RELAY FOR LIFE The relay event for the American Cancer Society is scheduled for Friday, June 20, at James Wood High School. Come out and walk the track and join your team for a night of celebrating and remembering. Special Events and Activities: 5:30 PM - Survivor Lap and Reception. If you are a survivor or currently have cancer, you and one guest are invited to take the first lap around the track. In addition you are invited to a special reception dinner in your honor. Registration forms for the dinner are located in the church office and at the American Cancer Society office located at 2654 Valley Ave. 9:00 PM - Luminaria Ceremony. The Luminaria Ceremony is a time to remember people we have lost to cancer, to support people who currently have cancer and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope. Luminaria and Tiki Torch Sale The Braddock Street Angels will be selling Luminaries and Tiki Torches (torch of hope) during our Mother's Day Brunch and on following Sundays in the Greetorium. Each Luminaria Bag is $5.00 and the Tiki Torches are $50. The torches can be reused in subsequent years for $20, which includes refurbishing. The Luminaria Bags and/or the Tiki Torches may be purchased in memory or in honor of family members and friends. Help us line the track and bring light to this special ceremony.

The Rock Slinger and His Greatest Hit Sunday, May 11, at the 9:45 AM worship service, the Children’s Choirs will present their spring musical by Allen Pote and Tom Long. It is a comical and very interesting retelling of the Biblical story - David and Goliath. It will appeal to all ages - be sure to plan to attend.

Choir Recognition Sunday - May 18 We are extremely grateful for the many people in-volved in our music ministry. On Sunday, May 18, we will take a few minutes in each service to recognize those persons. 8:30 AM - Children’s Choirs, Bel Canto Ensemble, and New Voices Choir

9:45 AM - Amazing Love Praise Band 11:00 AM - Sonshine Singers, Sanctuary Choir, Joyful

Ringers

Your dedication to music and mission is extremely important to our future, and it is with grateful hearts that we say thank you for your service. Let us unite and give praise to God.

Organ Dedication Recital Set America's famous organ-duo, Elizabeth and Raymond Chenault, will play the dedication recital for our newly completed Letourneau Pipe Organ, Op.124, Sunday, June 8, 4:00 PM. The Chenaults, duo-organists, have performed extensively throughout the United States and in Europe. Specializing in works written for two performers, the Chenaults have commissioned and premiered over forty organ duets. Because of their unique and refreshing repertoire, combined with their exciting and sensitive artistry, the Chenaults are in demand as recitalists and have established them-selves as America's leading duo-organists. They have been featured on "Pipedreams" and record on the Gothic Record Label. In addition, this duo have been featured performers at the AGO Convention and on "Performance Today.” Several volumes of The Chenault Organ Duet Library Collection have been published by Warner Brothers. They are excited to be traveling to Winchester and performing for the entire community on the Letourneau Organ at Braddock St. UMC. Their program will include many easy listening selections including "Phantom of the Opera." Plan now to attend - 4 hands and 4 feet making music - an exciting performance.

As our church attendance grows, we have need of new hymnals and the worship

team is inviting our church family to give a The United Methodist Hymnal or The

Faith We Sing songbook in honor or memory of someone dear to you.

The current cost of the

hymnal is $18.00 and

The Faith We Sing is

$12.00.

We will be ordering ap-

proximately 47 hymnals

and 15 The Faith We

Sing songbooks. If you

wish to place one or

more of these books in

the Sanctuary in

memory or honor of

someone, please send the information and your check to the church office to the attention of

It is our hope that you will find this a meaningful way to honor someone you love and to enhance the

Expressive Arts at Valley Health

Art Therapy allows one to engage their innate creative energies. When words alone are not sufficient to express emotions,

expressive art-making provides an outlet. Engaging in the creative process promotes self-expression, and may reduce stress and foster feelings of well-being. It is both restorative and relaxing. Difficult thoughts and emotions can be transformed into an unexpected work of art.

Winchester Medical Center is now offering Art Therapy for patients, families, caregivers and staff! Please join us every Tuesday 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM for an open-door, expressive arts clinic. Paint, create, write and more! No artistic ability is required - the process of making and creating art is emphasized and explored in this supportive, open setting. No appointment, no fee, and no commitment! Located in the Cancer Resource Area, ground floor near MOB 1 entrance.
