What is an Organisational
Structure?• Shows how RESPONSIBILITIES in a
business are DIVIDED up amongst different departments and people.
• It shows people INSIDE and OUTSIDE of the business the different job roles for all employees.
• It shows who is RESPONSIBLE for who.
Why Bother?
•Helps to bring order to the business•Helps new employees•Helps people outside of the business
What is a Hierarchy?
Our organisational structure is also a HIERARCHY.
If you are at the TOP of the hierarchy you have more
RESPONSIBILITY, AUTHORITY and ACCOUNTABILITY!!!
What is the Chain of Command?

Tall or Flat? This is dependant upon the numberof layers the organisation has
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF EACH STRUCTURE, TALL AND FLAT?
T.P.S
AdvantagesFlat
•Communication is quicker•Fewer people in the layers, so less mistakes•People at bottom can feel involved with those at the top
Tall•Lines of communication and responsibilities are clear•Span of control is smaller•Opportunity for promotion
Span of Control?• The person that a worker is responsible
to is their LINE MANAGER.• The workers that someone is responsible
for are known as their SUBORDINATES.• Span of Control – the number of
subordinates that a line manager is DIRECTLY responsible for.
De-layering
• De-layering is the removal of layers from the organisation chart, what would be the benefit of this?
Saves money Empowers remaining
staff
Check List• Hierarchy• Chain of command• Line manager• Span of control
• Delegation• Tall organisation• Flat organisation

which position and why.
