Rotary International
Sharing to you part of the RI president's message for the month of August 2019. Your club's
membership committee will then apply Rotary's classification system — designed to ensure
that the range of professions in your community is well represented — to identify potential
leaders with the skill, the talent, and the character that will strengthen your club. If your club's
membership committee is unsure how to proceed, look to the club membership committee
checklist on Rotary.org for clearly defined steps to organizing its work. How else will we connect to
grow Rotary? We will also form new types of clubs — either independent clubs or satellite clubs
— with different meeting experiences and engaging service opportunities, not just where there is
no Rotary, but also where Rotary is already thriving. No Rotary club in the world can possibly
serve all segments of its community.
Therefore, we must organize new clubs to engage the community leaders who cannot
connect with our existing clubs. Growing Rotary is all about taking the connections that make our
organization unique in the world and strengthening and multiplying them. Let us commit ourselves
to growing Rotary and to welcoming the next diverse generation of women and men as Rotary
Connects the World.

Magandang Buhay L.A.C.E.S.!!!!
Wow!!! We will have three events tonight. First, it is our 8th Regular Weekly
Meeting and fellowship evening. All of us are wearing our Filipiniana attire to honor the
Celebration of ―Buwan ng Wika.‖ Second, our Rookie of the Year (RY 2018-2019) will
be celebrating with us her birthday. It is her 2nd year since joining our club. Third, is
our Area 2D Assistant Governor’s visit to our club by our very own, PP Rae Kara
―Tweet‖ A. Malbog. A kind hearted and dedicated person. But most importantly. A
beautiful member of our club. Oh, I’m so excited!!
As president, last week was a very hectic week, full of activities and
commitments. Last Wednesday was the turn over of house hold goods ( dining table,
chairs, laton-water containers, and kitchen wares) to the House of Hope. There were
two families occupying the place at the time of turn over. Thanks to our partner in
service, Mother Butler Guild for their generous donation and PP Mary Ann Tesoro for
the dining set. We also attended the Induction and AG visit of Rotary Club of
Compostela Valley on August 22, 2019. And we (Area 2D delegates) went to Butuan
City on the 23rd of August for the Grant Management Seminar. Jump off time at
4am and the arrival in Tagum is 10pm, same day. I’m so happy and glad that our TRF
and Service Director attended the very informative seminar. Hoping that we can apply
for a grant fund this year. Good luck, and God bless us all, L.A.C.E.S.

In many Rotary clubs throughout the world,
wives of male members have been
affectionately called ―Rotary Anns?’ This
designation was never one of disparagement,
but rather grew out of an interesting historical
occasion.
The year was 1914 when San Francisco Rotarians
boarded a special train to attend the Rotary
Convention being held in Houston. In those days, few
wives attended Rotary events, and until the train
stopped in Los Angeles, the only woman aboard was
the wife of Rotarian Brunnier.
As the train picked up additional convention bound
delegates, Mrs. Ann Brunnier was introduced as the
Rotarian’s Ann. This title soon became ―Rotary Ann?’
Since the clubs of the West were inviting the Rotarians
to hold their next convention in San Francisco, a
number of songs and stunts were organized that
would be performed in Houston. One of the Rotarians
wrote a ―Rotary Ann‖ chant. On the train’s arrival at
the Houston depot, a delegation greeted the West
Coast Rotarians. One of the greeters was Guy
Gundaker of Philadelphia, whose wife was also named
Ann. During the rousing demonstration, someone
started the Rotary Ann chant. The two petite ladies,
Ann Brunnier and Ann Gundaker, were hoisted to the
men’s shoulders and paraded about the hall. The
group loved the title given to the two women named
Ann. Immediately, the same term of endearment was
used for all of the wives in attendance.

Since the late 1990s, Rotary International
has been using the Internet to communicate with
its members and to showcase Rotary’s many
pro-grams and activities. The official RI Web site
at www.rotary.org also allows members to
con-duct Rotary business online — from ordering
publications to making contributions to The
Rotary Foundation to registering for the RI
Convention and other meetings.
Club officers can enter the site’s Business Portal
and make changes to their club’s membership
Information. Using the Where Clubs Meet function,
members can easily identify places to do make
ups. The site’s Download Center offers an array of
publications and forms, making it more convenient
and less expensive for Rotarians to access Rotary
materials. Language communities provide
essential Rotary information in eight languages
and link to official language sites maintained by
Rotarians around the world.
The RI Web site offers a vast amount of
information — including the latest Rotary news.
A visit to www.rotary.org will be enlightening to
all Rotarians.

Membership and New Club Development Month
August is Membership and New Club Development Month. This is the perfect time to celebrate your
club’s members and consider the many options available for strengthening your membership.
The following ideas can get you started:
Show your Rotary pride by adding a Proud Member frame to your profile picture on Facebook.
Watch RI President Mark Daniel Maloney speak about growing Rotary and share his short membership
video at your next club or district meeting.
Welcome new members to your club with Rotary Basics. The online course covers all things Rotary in
an interactive, multimedia format. The course was designed for new members, but it’s also a good
refresher for long-time members who want to test their Rotary knowledge. Encourage local business-
es, nonprofits, and government groups to get involved in Rotary by offering corporate memberships.
Learn more about this innovative membership model in the Guide to Corporate Membership.
Did you know you can start a satellite club with as few as eight members? The Guide to Satellite Clubs
explains what a satellite club is, how it can benefit your community, and steps for starting one.
Passport clubs encourage their members to visit other clubs and participate in their activities as a way
to get fresh ideas. Learn more about this club model in the new Guide to Passport Clubs.
The newly updated Club Flexibility page has great ideas and tips for how your club can stay relevant to
current and future members.
Finally, Rotary has a series of membership courses available in the Learning Center — from managing
Online Membership Leads to Building a Diverse Club. Each course includes self-guided learning
modules that let you explore real-life scenarios you might experience in your club. All membership
courses are highlighted in purple.
You can find all these resources and more at rotary.org/membership.

The idea of organizing an all-female Rotary Club of Tagum was thought of as early as 1989 by the Rotarian and
Anns of RC Tagum North. The initial organizing of the club however started only sometime in the first week of February
1991.
The names of 28 selected ladies were first floated by the Rotarians & Anns of RC Tagum North. Out of this number,
16 responded by attending the first organizational meeting held at Magnolia Kiosk along Quezon St., Tagum. Other
ladies were later invited to the regular weekly meetings as prospective members of the club although their attendance
along with some of those who were initially invited were irregular. In this organizational meetings, Rotary Information was
given by Rtn. Jess Albacite, Special Governor’s Representative and PP of RC Tagum North, Rtn. Rey Vegara,
Incumbent President RC Tagum North, Rtn. Bebot Madayag, District Governor’s Representative & PP of RC Tagum.
Other Rotarians who helped in giving various information included Rtn. Arrel Olaňo, PP RC Tagum; Rtn. Danny Lee,
Past DGR and PP of RC Tagum North; Rtn. Jun Cagas and Rtn. Raffy Erfe, both RC Tagum North.
Out of the original forty (40) ladies who were invited to organizational meetings, only 25 were finally submitted for
charter membership of the new club. The names which were submitted to Rotary International on October 30, 1992 are
as follows: Nelida Aguillon, Cynthia Catungal, Leonida Decena, Natividad del Rosario, Maria Cleofe Evidente, Corazon
Fernandez, Susan Franco, Rebecca Lectura, Flordeliza Magallon, Marilyn Grace Mangilet, Jocelyn Melendres, Ofelia
Millan, Anna Geraldine Morante, Nenita Nazareno, Providencia Nuňez, Jocelyn Ong, Evelyn Ross Perdido, Carolina
Quirante, Mai Rallos, Agnes Resurreccion, Linda Sicam, Lay Fong Soo-Montero, Arisfina Torre, Conchita Yago, and
Amelie Tan-Ramos.
From these charter members: the following were elected as Charter Officers: Rtn. Rebecca Lectura, Pres.; Rtn.
Providencia Nuňez, Pres.-Elect; Rtn. Nenita Nazareno, Vice-Pres.; Rtn. Susan Franco, Sec.; Rtn. Jocelyn Melendres,
Tres.; Rtn. Linda Sicam, Auditor; Rtn. Conchita Yago, P.R.O.; Rtn. Natividad del Rosario, Sgt-at-Arms; Rtn. Corazon
Fernandez, Dir.; Rtn. Agnes Resurreccion, Dir.; Rtn. Marilyn Grace Mangilet, Dir.; and Rtn. Arisfina Torre, Dir.
The club officers & members of the newly organized ROTARY CLUB OF TAGUM GOLDEN L.A.C.E.S. (Ladies in
Action Committed to Effective Service) first met DG Xavier C. Ledesma, Incumbent District Governor for 1991-1992,
at Molave Hotel on Sept. 4, 1992 in his club visitation of the Rotary Clubs in Tagum.
On December 1, 1992, the club received the good news from SEABO that its application for membership was
formally admitted by Rotary International on November 19, 1992 with Club No. 29117.
