Dear Parishioners,

Greetings of Grace and Peace!

I thought I would let you know again, in case you have not heard, that my Covid-19 test result came back negative. While it was a relief to me, a huge load taken off my shoulders, it was in no way an occasion to rejoice as we are still in the middle of this devastation, still suffering the onslaught of the pathogen. I am concerned with the many parishioners (families and individu-als) who are currently hurting because of Covid-19, especially those in hospital ICU’s. Those of us who have been exposed, quarantined, shielded, and tested, the experience is mutual. It hit home. We are in solidarity with those who bear the burden of the moment. We empathize with them even though we do not exactly know what they are facing. We cannot imagine the stress of living with someone battling Covid-19. Life in isolation may have been a staycation, a much-needed time for R&R (at home) but for the most part, it was a rude awakening. We are facing an invisible enemy, beyond borders and bullets. Our only option is to work together so that this unimaginable crisis may quickly be put behind us. Quarantine life afforded me an enormous time to pray for deliverance for all of us who courageously put our lives on the line: priests, deacons, parish staffs, liturgical ministers, super-volunteers, beloved parishioners of the Douglas-Pirtleville nation and beyond.

As covid-19 cases continue to rise at frightening and terrifying levels with little sign of slowing

down (Douglas area being a hotspot in Cochise County), indoor (in-person) public worship has been temporarily suspended. However, this Sunday, July 12, 2020, we will have outdoor Masses at Loretto School, west yard. Please note that these are early morning and late afternoon/early evening Masses. We figure no one will show up if temperatures are in the three-digits, even anything above 90 degrees.

THE DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION will take place as congregants exit the place of worship, and after each Mass in the parking lot for those who watched the live-streamed Mass.

SUNDAY OFFERING. Since we are combining Sunday Masses in one location, please place your Sunday sacrificial offering in the envelope with your parish name on it.

OTHER PARISH RELATED INFORMATION 1. FUNERALS: In an effort to reduce the risk of possible transmission, indoor funeral Mass with

only 10 attendees will take place on a case to case basis. Graveside services and/or (outdoor) funeral Mass early morning or late afternoon/early evening are recommended depending on the day and time of the service. Nowadays, we just cannot say so and so died. Our hearts break every time we hear about death in town. Mourning has become a collective process. Nobody should die alone. No one should be buried alone. No family should be left by themselves to bear the burden. We walk this troubled road with them. What we have lost was not only a loved one, we have also been deprived of the sacred ritual of honoring the dead. As religious people whose lives are heavily influenced by divine power, funerals are time-honored rituals we cannot do without. Burial traditions are sacrosanct. Religious rituals are necessary for human salvation. Every death is tragic. Grieving is part of life. Healing takes time. We come together (in-person) to be with the bereaved family at the most difficult moment of their lives. In these rituals, we express our condolences, sorrow and grief through flowers and words of sympathy and consolation. We hope that our presence will bring some comfort and hope to the family.

XV DOMINGO. TIEMPO ORDINARIO. CICLO A

LA PARABOLA DEL SEMBRADOR

Mt 13,1-23

San Mateo, en el capítulo 13, empieza su tercer discurso: “el Sermón de las Parábolas”.

Mateo organizó su evangelio como una nueva presentación de la Ley de Dios o como un

nuevo “Pentateuco” con sus cinco libros. Los cinco discursos son: El discurso del monte

(5,1 – 7,29), el discurso misionero (10,1-42), el discurso parabólico (13,1-52), el discurso

eclesial (18,1-35) y el discurso escatológico (24,1 – 25,46).

Este tercer discurso contiene siete parábolas: La parábola del sembrador, La parábola

de la cizaña, La parábola del grano de mostaza y la levadura, La parábola del tesoro

escondido, la parábola de la perla preciosa y la red. Aunque muestro Señor presentó

varias parábolas en este capítulo, solo interpretó 2 de ellas: la parábola del sembrador y

la parábola del trigo y la cizaña.

Un día «salió Jesús de casa» (Cafarnaúm, centro de su actividad misionera) y se dirigió

a las orillas del lago. El evangelista nos informa que lo seguía tanta gente, que al llegar a

la orilla del lago subió a una barca y se alejó un poco para poder desde allí predicar.

Desde la barca se puso a hablarles «mucho rato» en parábolas. El término “parábola”

procede del griego parabolé, que significa yuxtaposición o comparación. Jesús enseña

con ejemplos al modo de una narración ficticia, haciendo referencia a eventos de la vida

cotidiana, para comunicar verdades de orden sobrenatural.

La primera parábola de aquel día fue la del sembrador. Era una imagen muy familiar en la región de Galilea. Tierra llena de colinas, en la que pequeñas extensiones de tierra se destinaban a la siembra. El Señor describe el proceso agrícola desde que el sembrador sale al campo a sembrar la semilla hasta el momento de la cosecha. En el proceso, no todas las semillas llegan a dar fruto, sino sólo las que caen en tierra buena. Las semillas que caen al borde del camino, son devoradas por los pájaros; las que caen en terreno pedregoso, brotan, pero se marchitan por el calor; otras al caer entre espinos logran crecer, pero finalmente son ahogadas por éstos. Sola las que caen en tierra buena darán fruto, el 30, 60 y 100 por ciento.

Después de pronunciada la parábola del sembrador, el Señor añade: «¡El que tenga oí-dos, que oiga!» exhortando a sus oyentes a profundizar en la vida espiritual, siendo co-mo aquella tierra fértil que acoge la palabra de Dios.

La parábola de Jesús suscita cierta inquietud a los discípulos, quienes le preguntan:

«¿Por qué les hablas en parábolas?» La respuesta parece desconcertante: «A ustedes

se les ha concedido conocer los secretos del Reino de los Cielos y a ellos no». Las

parábolas tenían la finalidad pedagógica de ayudar a entender a los oyentes de las

realidades de orden sobrenatural, de un modo sencillo y didáctico. Los «secretos del

Reino de los Cielos» no es una doctrina secreta, reservada únicamente para un grupo

selecto de iniciados, sino para los de corazón sencillo. A los Apóstoles se les concedió

comprender los misterios del Reino de los Cielos a través de la sabiduría divina, para

proclamar las enseñanzas de Jesús a todos.

No todos tienen oídos para escuchar. La doctrina del Reino de los Cielos es

incomprensible para quien endurece el corazón. Se requiere escuchar el evangelio con

una actitud humilde. No todos los oyentes tienen una disposición interior, a la Palabra

revelada. Jesucristo es esa Palabra del Padre que «sale de su boca», baja a la tierra

como la lluvia, la fecunda y la hace germinar, para volver al Padre cargada de frutos de

salvación. Pero tal fecundidad, muchas veces se cortada por la dureza de los oyentes de

corazón soberbio e indiferentes.

Al igual que muchos endurecieron el corazón desoyendo la enseñanza de los profetas,

ahora también muchos endurecían el corazón y rechazaban al mismo Hijo de Dios y sus

enseñanzas. Pero son dichosos los Apóstoles y discípulos que “ven” y “oyen” lo que

muchos profetas y justos desearon ver y oír, es decir, al mismo Mesías enviado por Dios

y sus palabras de Vida.

Que Dios nos conceda un corazón humilde que sepa escuchar, su sabiduría y su gracia para que seamos esa tierra buena. Cada día hay que trabajar en nuestra vida quitando, las piedras, las espinas y las yerbas que ahogan la semilla. No dejemos que las cosas del mundo y las preocupaciones de la vida ahoguen la Palabra de Dios sembrada en nuestros corazones. Necesitamos el agua del Espíritu Santo que fecunde la semilla y podamos dar frutos de vida en grandes cantidades, según nuestra capacidad, para gloria de Dios Padre. Amen
