Vol. 76, No. 4 Editors: Henry Francis and Jody Latham Daily Bulletin November 28-December 8, 2002 76th Fall North American Bridge Championships Monday, December 2, 2002 Phoenix, Arizona When Alvin Levy takes over as president of the American Contract Bridge League in January, he plans to concentrate on five major items: -- Get bridge into middle and high schools. -- Keep the game in balance at all levels of play. -- Concentrate on promotion and sponsorship. -- Promote all forms of bridge -- Work toward a strong and successful world pres- ence. But before we get into all that, let's find out who Alvin Levy is. First of all, he prefers to be called Al. He was a scientist/engineer in the field of structural mechanics and material science. He retired in 1998 to play more golf and bridge and to concentrate more on bridge administration. Over the past 20 years he has served on his Unit and District Boards in many capacities. He is serving his third term on the ACBL Board of Directors. He started playing bridge in college after reading a book by Charles Goren."For years Terence Reese was my favorite author and his books helped me discover the game." Years ago he developed a strong interest in com- puter bridge. In fact, he was the organizer of the World Computer Bridge Championships which were staged for the first time in 1997. "The two finalists this year, Jack, from the Netherlands, the reigning world cham- pion, and WBridge5, from France, this year's runner- up, played particularly well." Here is what Levy had to say on various subjects pertinent to the ACBL. “Here is how I see the present and future of tour- nament bridge in North America. Tournament bridge is currently healthy and exciting. Its success is due mainly to our unit- and district-level volunteers, who run organized bridge throughout North America (with the exception of the NABCs). They had been married 27 years. “Paul was looking forward to renewing our vows,” said Diane. “Instead, we’ll have a celebration of his life.” Diane said she was especially concerned about the couple’s two dogs: MacDuff, a Scottish terrier, and Jean-Paul, a Papillon “named after Paul. He called me from Memphis (site of special tournament director training) and said, ‘How are my boys? I miss them.’” Another passion was the Green Bay Packers foot- ball team. “He lived and breathed Green Bay,” said TD Roger Putnam, who worked with Cullen in British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. Matt Smith, field supervisor for Districts 18, 19 and 20, remembered Cullen as “a chubby guy, deaf as a post but he always had a smile. “The best thing about Paul was that he always laughed – and he could laugh at himself. He was just a good, basically nice guy. He’d do whatever you wanted him to do. We’ll miss him.” District 20 Director Bob Lix agreed. “It’s a great loss to the ACBL directing staff. He will be sorely missed at tournaments in District 20.” TD John Ashton, a longtime friend, had known Cullen since he moved to Portland in the early Seven- ties and started directing at club games. “He loved his wife, Diane, the work he did as a TD, the bridge play- ers and bridge – in about that order.” Continued on page 4 Patty Johnson advances to National Director “My work as a tournament director is a most re- warding experience” is the way Patty Johnson describes her occupation. “I’m part of a huge loving family.” Patty is the director who always has a happy smile, who makes everyone at her tournaments feel welcome and respected, who enjoys the atmosphere that sur- rounds working tournament directors. He led aheart to the jack, and was happy when the jack won –Minken ducked! Declarer ruffed a spade and tried theheart finesse again. This time it lost! Minken switchedto a diamond, won with the ace, and declarer was indeep dark trouble. He led a club, and Tchamitch wasable to ruff in with the 8. He once again led a spade, and declarer resignedly ruffed in dummy with the ace.Minken ruffed the club return and the defense cashedtwo more diamonds for a 300-point set.

tions for sectionals and regionals. A challenge they faceis how to run appealing tournaments that are financiallysuccessful in spite of rising costs and a slightly declin-ing membership. The ACBL can help in a number ofways, including encouraging a good working relation-ship between the professional directing staff and thesponsoring organizations and finding ways of holdingdown the rising fees charged. All in all, tournamentbridge is doing well in spite of these challenges. Ofcourse, if we could increase membership and raisemoney through sponsorship, we could become a pow-erhouse.

“Sectional Tournaments at Clubs are growing andshould be further promoted. This is a great idea andhas helped many clubs and units prosper as well asadding excitement for the players.

“At our premiere tournaments, the three NABCs,we continue to have success. Once again, local volun-teers as well as fund-raising by unit and district spon-soring organizations play a big role in the tournaments’success. Not only do our members and many foreignplayers come to play by the thousands, but these tour-naments are also the venue where bridge business takesplace. One challenge at this level is to choose the rightcities and the right locations within these cities. Sincethe ACBL relies on the revenue from NABCs, there isa lot riding on these decisions. In addition, at NABCsthe ACBL should focus on the opportunity for goodPR and major press coverage.

“It’s important to get bridge into middle schoolsand high schools. This will ensure the health of orga-nized bridge in the years to come. The ACBL has amajor program in place to get a foothold in schools. Also, there are a number of individuals and groups whohave generated promotional and teaching material. Isee in my own district potentially successful programsin large school districts very interested in using bridgeas a tool to help their pupils think logically.

“This objective is not easy to achieve becauseschools and school districts operate independently. There can be, however, a domino effect if we have someearly successes, and the potential payoff is tremendous.

“I plan to put together a blue ribbon panel to lookinto having local rules officially adopted for some club

play. This will allow club owners some latitude in run-ning their club games. Club owners can best determinewhat their clientele want and what will make their regu-lar club games thrive.

“At the other end of the spectrum, I would like tosee the integrity of the North American champion-ships preserved. This includes smaller fields qualify-ing for the finals and retention of some form of expertpanel to resolve appeals.

“Promotion and sponsorship are very important.Making our game more popular will lead to greatermembership and open the doors to more sponsorship. To that end, our CEO, Jay Baum, recently hired twotop-notch people in the areas of marketing and promo-tion.

“As technology changes and Internet use becomesa way of life, there is increasing access to alternateforms of bridge playing, bridge teaching and bridgeamusement. Bridge online and web sites enhance theexperience of many bridge players and attract newmembers. Some enjoy taking part in an interactivebridge contest or watching the finals of a major cham-pionship event in real time. For others, just playinglate at night with friends from around the world is ex-citing. Many players use computer-bridge programsto amuse themselves and to learn. Many authors nowwrite interactive software that offers a new level oflearning experience. All these forms of bridge shouldbe promoted.

“It is important that bridge thrives all over the worldand that the World Bridge Federation continues to holdchampionships. The more bridge is recognized as aworldwide game, the more it can be promoted andgrow. I would like to see a good relationship betweenthe ACBL and the WBF as well as among all nationalbridge organizations. Worldwide cooperation can go along way in keeping our game in the limelight.”

Cullen had just started coming to work at NABCs,Ashton said, “and he loved the interaction with direc-tors and players.”

Ashton laughed as he recalled how Cullen’s deaf-ness was seen by others. “I’d just scream at him andpeople would wonder how I could treat him like that. He’d be standing three feet away and I’d say, ‘Paul.’Then: ‘PAUL.’ And finally: ‘PAAUULL.’”

Turning serious again, Ashton said, “If you gavehim any job, he would do it.”

The Tournament Committee announced late yes-terday that Wednesday will be “Paul Cullen MemorialDay” at this NABC.

but she didn’t play. She just sat by the director’s deskand watched. Her friend, Marion Bendersky, showedher how to work a scoresheet and told her a lot aboutthe Laws. Eventually Patty found herself running someclub games at the Lightman Club in Memphis.

And now she is the darling of Florida bridge play-ers. Shirley Seals, Florida’s representative to the ACBLBoard of Director, calls her the hardest working per-son she has even encountered.

"No job is too difficult for her to undertake and dowell. One of her greatest attributes is her fairness –she is totally fair with the players and her fellow direc-tors. She makes our tournaments fun, but she givesfirm rulings. She runs a tight ship, and everyone re-spects her.”

Jayne Thomas, District 9’s previous Board repre-sentative, said that District 9 was ever so lucky to havegained such a fantastic person as Patty as its chief tour-nament director. “Patty’s always there. She does ev-erything. She doesn’t just direct – she does everything.”

Her first tournament work also was in Memphis, working under the late Nelson Rowe. Nelson was soimpressed with her that he told all his fellow directorsthat they should hire Patty for their tournaments. Thuswas a star born.

Millikan had only 9 HCP, but he liked his shapeand opened 1. After Boye Brogeland of Norway madea takeout double, Castellino not surprisingly leaped to4. Tony Forrester of England wasn’t about to be shutout with his near opener – he bid the spade game. WhenMillikan pushed on to 5, Castellino realized the tre-mendous potential of his hand – surely partner had avoid in spades – so he raised to six. So confident didhe feel that he redoubled when Forrester ventured adouble.

Castellino was able to set up his long spades, sohis side chalked up an unusual score – plus 2070. Thatwas easily enough for a win on the board – their oppo-nents played in 5 doubled at the other table.

,1Each player is required to have a convention card

filled out legibly and on the table throughout a ses-sion. Both cards of a partnership must be identical andinclude the first and last names of each member of thepartnership.

If a director determines that neither player has asubstantially completed card, the partnership may playonly Class A conventions and may use only standardcarding. This restriction may be lifted only at the be-ginning of a subsequent round after convention cardshave been properly prepared and approved by the di-rector. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6 boardmatchpoint penalty for each board played, commenc-ing with the next round and continuing until the re-striction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shallbe at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention card buthas not fully complied with ACBL regulations, he orshe may give warnings or assign such penalties as heor she deems appropriate under the circumstances.

Terrace Cafe at the Hyatt Hotel at 4:45 p.m. on Tues-day, Dec. 3. Members of the OKbridge team, includ-ing founder Matt Clegg, will be in town and they arelooking forward to meeting everyone.

/A player approached a director after yesterday

afternoon’s game and demanded that the scoresheetnot be displayed. “Our score was obscene, even by FirstAmendment values,” he said. Guess he’ll have to ap-peal to the Supreme Court – the scoresheet was postedfor all to see.

I was playing with Bobby Wolff and yes, 3 was aterrible bid. We have at least 300 coming to us if wedouble 3. But the field played heart partscores on aclub lead and trump shift – making eight tricks.

In 3, the defense led two rounds of clubs. I ruffedand decided to scramble what I could from the wreck-age. I led the J and put in the king, then cashed thetop hearts and diamonds, ruffed a heart and led the Afrom hand. Remarkably, the defense is helpless to stopnine tricks.

When East ruffs low, you overruff, ruff a club, ruffa diamond with the K and have nine tricks in the bag.A slight defensive error actually let me score plus 170but even plus 140 would have been huge.

&Tournament Director Stephen Kanzee was called

to a table where a husband and wife were playingagainst two women. One of the women realized thatshe is short a card. Kanzee found the missing card andrestored it to her hand. He explained that if she hadfailed to follow to the current trick that it could be cor-rected, but if she had failed to follow to an earlier trick,a revoke had been established.

Kanzee was called back after the play, and all threewomen were talking. Finally the husband said, “La-dies, can’t you be quiet and let Steve make his rul-ing?” Then he turned to Kanzee and said, “See howhard it is to get in a word edgewise with three womenat the table?”

After making the ruling, Kanzee told the husband,“I trust your wife will give you your ruling later.”
