AVDC-0-CP 4 lovember 1966 ~ \ StJBJ!m': 0perat10Ml Report tor ~rl-7 Period Ending 31 October 1966 0{'

(RlS csrca-65) (U)

AwonatiAP: This intorM.tion ahould be -.de available to oo.andera and oonaidered as an it. tor exploration in PSYOPS.

c. .Dta: Viet Cong inrraatructllr';.

DiaQWJaign: The aigniticant lack or Rorth Vietnamese Army contact during portions or this pnriod afforded ecwnandere or US Forces the opportunity to OOIIDit torces to destror the Viet Cong intrastructure tor the first time. The 1n1 tiation or operations against the Viet Cong inrraatruoture is difficult tor several reasons: There is little information/intelligence uintained by ARVN from \drlch US Forces can get a good start J this is umerstandable since 1 t is ditticul t to penetrate the Viet Cong int:raatructure.

<lmomt1QD: The problem or attacking the inf'rastructure has to be approached on a long range basis and as a joint effort wit. both ARVN and lE Forces participation. The lE Forces should be used to suppress overt guerrilla activities, wile the ARVll concentrates on the collection ot necessar.y 08 information to root out the Viet Cang.

d. .Ita: M!lps.

Diacwssion: Battalions have been unillg both th8 standard 1:50,000 topographic maps and the nev 1:25,000 pictomJJ.ps. It has been found that it onl.y one IMP is used, t.~ 1:50,000 map is the best. Bovever, wen using ~ pietomaps as a 8Uf•plement to the 1:50,000 map, many details or the terrain are brought out which definitely aid the man on the ground in determining his location. It should be pointed out that the new 1:50,000 11111p series incorporate some of the faults of the old serie!!l. The terrain in mountaino!ls, heavily junglAd l'l.Tf\as is o:t~n V8gllely depicted. Prominent ridg~tl, ravines~ etre'l!!'ls, etc. are found on the ground which do not appear t "\ the maps. This oometimes mnkos for difficult land navigation.

C!>servation: Junior le,.ders should bn appraised of tb')s~ f~tcts.
