WITHOUT QUESTION: A NEW BUILDING IS NEEDED
The situation at Ortenau Hospital left much to be desired: the nine operating theatres in the 486-bed house were located on three floors, and theatres and personnel could not be deployed effectively. In 2008, the construction of the new building was started, which helped to solve several problems: a new building was constructed as a car park, on top of which the central OR was built consisting of ten theatres up to 57 m² large and the central sterilisa-tion department. On the building’s roof, the hospital was able to provide a helicopter landing spot.
CONVENIENT: PACKAGE SOLUTION OFFERS ONE
CONCEPT AND ONE CONTACT
The hospital management relied on external support right from the start. The “Hospitaltechnik Planungsgesellschaft” (Planning Company for Hospital Technology) in Krefeld was responsible for basic engineering, conception, tendering and construction management. For the OR, planner and building owner agreed it was necessary to implement an overall concept as a matter of principle. Thus, they were looking for a supplier of the OR lights, video signal networking and ceiling supply units that could provide all components in one package and would be involved in planning as well as realisation and support.
The medical planner Hans-Georg Averdunk of the Hospital-technik Planungsgesellschaft sees several advantages: “All components are coordinated and the overall responsi -bility lies with the equipping company, which greatly identifies with the product and is motivated to ensure that things are coordinated and have a positive result.”
In contrast to single tendering, this principle offers the benefit that components are harmonised with regard to each other and the concept and work is of high quality.
Director of Nursing, Hans-Jürgen Kargoll, adds: “We wanted a service partner, a central contact person for the cooperation of the complex high-technology units.”
In Lahr, the Hospital Planungsgesellschaft, in cooperation with the system supplier Dräger, has systematically implemented such a uniform overall concept for the first time.

CONVINCING: DRÄGER IS AWARDED THE TENDER
Ortenau Hospital was looking for suppliers offering an overall OR solution. “In addition, it was required that the supplier would manufacture the ceiling supply units, monitor holders and OR lights and should have coopera-tion references concerning suppliers of video signal equipment,” says Michael Armbruster, Assistant Director of Purchasing and Logistics Department. A part of the concept in Lahr is a comprehensive video signal transfer between the operating theatres and the hospital systems. This was a requirement Dräger could fulfil. Michael Armbruster: “With regard to an overall evaluation concern-ing price, functionality and service, Dräger received the highest number of points and, thus, was awarded the contract.”
COMPETENT: SUPPORT FOR FINE PLANNING DURING
REALISATION
After the contract was awarded, Dräger greatly supported fine planning and the realisation process. Hans-Georg Averdunk: “Dräger has contributed their great expertise as a system supplier that is familiar with hospital processes.” The operators of Ortenau Hospital particularly appreciated the visualisation of the concrete operating theatre configura-tion via the 3D tool, a planning software developed by Dräger, during the fine planning to optimally arrange the systems.
“The planning competence was of great value, especially during the difficult device arrangement in the hybrid OR,” mentions Armbruster. “We received considerable support from Dräger to have the ceiling supply units, displays and lights in the hybrid OR optimally arranged, today.”

The hospital in Lahr also values the manufacturer’s flexibility: Dräger has manufactured OR lights with support arms of special lengths for the hybrid OR in Lahr.
REVIEW: MANY ADVANTAGES IN DAILY ROUTINE
The conclusion of the overall solution in Lahr is very positive. Planner Averdunk emphasises that the principle of an “OR from one source” allowed for a quick realisa-tion. The time between the tender and the official approval in Lahr took only 15 months. According to the Director of Nursing, Kargoll, the concept has also proved its success during normal business. The standardised equipment of all operating theatres without technical theatre assignment provides the advantage that rooms and employees can be assigned with greater flexibility and also reduces the times between OR uses.
Furthermore, fewer versions of devices reduce the training effort and ergonomic workplaces improve the physical load of nursing staff, as they need to move patients to another bed less often. Armbruster of the Purchasing Department praises the easy handling and reliability of the devices. He also values the service: as the hospital had been working with Dräger for several years, he knew about their service quality. Michael Armbruster: “I never had complaints.”
The users are also positive when summarising the overall solution. “Uniform devices lead to uniform procedures”, emphasises Dr. Thomas Fösel, Chief Physician for Anaesthesia. This provides several advantages: the staff know how to operate the devices better. As a result, the waiting and vacant times could be reduced with the new central OR.

Chief Physician for Anaesthesia, Fösel: “The new OR concept fulfilled our expectations completely. Just one week after moving in, all colleagues were already acquainted with and praised the new work environment.”
The experienced anaesthetist values the overall concept from one source: “You have a contact person.” Dr. Thomas Fösel sees definite advantages for the surgery process. Thanks to the comprehensive imaging and integration of cameras into the lights, the anaesthetist could participate more active in the surgery.
Dr. Thomas Fösel: “You can see the progress of surgery more precisely and react faster, under certain conditions.” According to Dr. Fösel, in the first year of operation the new operating theatres allowed them to perform 300 surgeries more than the previous year (2010: 8900 surgeries). More personnel would increase this capacity even further.
Planner Hans-Georg Averdunk is optimistic: “We are confident that we realised a central OR with this overall concept that has reserve capacities for the next 15 years.”
