The three campuses in Suita, Toyonaka and Minoh cities and Nakanoshima area occupy a total area of 1.444 million m 2 . There are about 5,100 teaching and administrative staff and 25,600 students. Osaka University was established in 1931 as the sixth imperial university. But it’ s scientific roots can be traced back to the open-minded and progressive tradition of the Osaka merchant culture of the Edo-period. Osaka University has supplied Japanese society with a great number of women and men of high talent. It is also well known and admired in the international community for its outstanding achievements in various scientific research fields. Having celebrated the 75th anniversary of its foundation in May 2006, the university is enlisting all of its talent to take a bold leap forward. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was inaugurated to centralize the operation of ODA by the government of Japan in 1974.As one of 13 International Centers conducted by JICA, The Osaka International Centre (OSIC) was opened at Nishi-Toyokawa-cho of Ibaraki City in April, 1994, to replace an older training center and allow a larger number of training participants to be accommodated.With the rich cultural heritage represented by the ancient Japanese capitals such as Kyoto and Nara, and the business expertise concentrated in Osaka, which is the industrial and economic heart of western Japan, OSIC provides training programs tailored to the needs of developing countries. Their programs cover business and industrial technology, infrastructure, scientific research, environmental studies, health and medical service, cultural assets preservation, legal systems and other fields.
