Tuesday this week was Autism Awareness Say! Students and staff were asked to wear blue on Tuesday to help raise awareness. Our school was filled with blue as well as kindness! Throughout this week Oscar Peterson raised a total of $225 for Autism awareness! This was possible because of our annual Hungry Hippos game! The Hungry Hippos tournament is a week long event where teachers verse each other as Hungry Hippos and try to collect the dodgeballs. It’s a real life display of the game Hungry Hippos, but with teachers! Students were asked to come and watch on assigned days based on their grade, and were asked to bring donations to help fund and support autism awareness. During this week grades six to eight have been participating in V.I.P. During this event, police officers come to our school to talk to students about the dangers of bullying and drugs. We would like to thank the police officers of York Region on behalf of the community for educating us and the help they provide when it comes to keeping our community safe. On Monday, April 8th, our Reach for the Top team will be organizing a teacher’s tournament. All students are welcome to watch free of cost. We encourage you to join us in the library at lunch recess.

The students and staff at Oscar Peterson Public School participated in the Second Annual Human Hungry Hippos Tournament to raise money for Autism Ontario in honour of Autism Awareness Month. For four days, students from each division were invited to come to the gym and watch their teachers take on other teacher or student teams. With your donations, Oscar Peterson has raised $390.00!!! This money will be donated to Autism Ontario, which is an organization, whose "goal is to be a reliable source of information and support for all York Region citizens who have a connection to autism, including families, children, adults on the spectrum, caregivers, support workers, and teachers" (https://www.autismontario.com/chapters/york-region).

The Oscar's Got Talent final list has been posted. Congratulations to all students who made the show. These acts will perform alongside the J/I Choir, Junior Dance club and the Intermediate Band at our J/I Talent Show on Wednesday May 1st at 6:30pm. A note was sent home with all individual acts this week with details regarding the show. There will be a dress rehearsal the afternoon of the 1st followed by the show in the evening. Everyone is welcome to attend!

OPPS will be celebrating Music Monday on Monday May 6th at 11:00am, where we will fill the skies with music, singing Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom". Students are encouraged to wear Oscar Peterson spirit wear, or our school colours (blue, black, silver/grey), on this day!

The Junior/Intermediate Choir is attending Music Alive on Monday April 15th at 9:00am. If you haven't filled out the School Cash Online permission form and payment, please do so as soon as possible.

The Intermediate Band will be wrapping up their musical year by performing at the Festival of Music at Canada's Wonderland on Wed May 22. Permission forms and payment are now up on School Cash Online for band members and is due by April 18th.

As we get ready for Earth Day here at Oscar Peterson, we are going to be focusing on how important it is for us to reduce our use of plastic. Plastic is having a huge impact on the world around us and if we don’t do something now, we may not be able to repair the damage.

That leaves us the question – How can we change things? What can we do? There are lots of ways to reduce the plastic that we are using every day. As we said during our Litterless lunch campaign, using a metal water bottle and bringing lunch is reuseable containers is a great start. Plastic bags are one big part of our plastic problem and our Eco team is giving you a way to help find a solution this year! During the week of April 23-26, we are asking that each class collect plastic bags in your classroom. On April 26, we are asking you to count the bags that your class has collected and we will combine all the bags to see how many we have collected. Our team has set a goal of 2 800 bags, which is about 4 bags per person. We’d love to go past that goal but this would be a great start. Begin saving the ones you have a home! Thanks for your help in saving our earth!

Hello All,

We are happy to let you all know that we are doing another fundraiser in memory of our Jaylen Williams. Please see the attached flyer.

As you may know, Jaylen had an opportunity through Make-A-Wish, and having his wish come true brightened the last few months of his life. Jaylen passed away May 2016 with a thankful heart. Jaylen always had a strong desire to help others so, through Play for Jay, we are helping make wishes come true in Jaylen's memory.

We have a big venue, however, there has been an amazing amount of interest from Jaylen's soccer family already for this event. This will be a well-attended event with dinner, fun entertainment, music, a silent auction and much, much more so we are hoping the Gala will sell out pretty quickly. For this reason, please confirm your attendance and the number of seats that you may need as soon as possible. I will have the tickets ready by late next week and will be happy to make arrangements to get them to anyone interested.

If you are unable to attend you still can contribute by donating to Make-A-Wish in Jaylen’s name. Here is the link to his webpage: https://makeawishca.donordrive.com/campaign/Play-for-Jay.

Any donations are greatly appreciated and go towards a great cause!

Also, please reach out if you have any donations for the aution or for sponsorship opportunities. We have a package put together with all the information that can be sent to you or it will be available on the website shortly. The address is www.playforjay.ca. The site will be up in a few days.

We would like to thank everyone for your constant support and love. I hope to see you at the Play for Jay Gala!

Regards,

Stephan Williams
