Seth MacFarlane

As a first time host, Seth MacFarlane has a lot to prove, so it’s a good thing he has made something of a name for himself. As creator/writer/vocal talent of Family Guy, American Dad, Ted and many other popular shows & films, he knows funny. That gives me high hopes for his hosting chops...just as long as he doesn’t use all his known characters as a crutch.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Amour Aging isn’t easy, and when it means losing the one you love... it makes it even more a challenge. In this heartfelt Austrian film, Georges and Anne face history, failing health and the stories we tell ourselves. *sigh...sounds intense.*

ArgoOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Truth can be stranger than fiction. This declassified CIA mission was made to be a movie...about a fake movie. Thrilling, suspenseful, and engrossing from start to finish. While not my favorite of all the films, it is my pick to take home the big prize of the night.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Beasts of the Southern Wild

This is a film that leaves you walking away with one word on your lips - wow. Both real and fantastical, the tale of Hushpuppy and the quest for survival is at times bleak, while also uplifting. Quite a task when set upon the shoulders of a director working on his first feature film and a stunning seven-year-old.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Django UnchainedA classic western meets... well, classic Tarantino. Of course there is a TON of blood, but the look at slavery mixed with the bro-matic relationship between Django and Dr. Schultz was wonderful to watch, and also to experience. And it IS an experience.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Les MisérablesThe hills are most certainly NOT alive with the sound of music... in fact, by the end, not much is alive. This big screen adaptation of the now-classic musical brings the great white way to life. The production, the cast and the overarching message of survival are sure to make it Oscar gold...at least for some!

Life of PiOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Here kitty kitty kitty... good kitty... It had been a whlile since I had read the book, but the film brings such a sense of magic. The visuals alone made it worth-while to watch. While I don’t think it will take the big prize, if the tiger doesn’t get something... well, I wouldn’t want to piss off Richard Parker!

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Lincoln

Classic storytelling and filmmaking at it’s finest. From the quality of the acting, to the richness of the story and sweeping direction, Lincoln felt like you weren’t watching history but were a part of it.

Silver Linings PlaybookOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Of all the movies up for Best Picture, this was probably my favorite. The drama, the comedy, the heart. It was a perfect blend of personal dysfunction and an underdog story you can’t help but root for. It also didn’t hurt that the chemistry between Lawrence and Cooper was close to perfection.

Zero Dark ThirtyOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

I would like to say how amazing I thought this was. How it sucks you in and leaves you breathless as the clock counts down in the race to find Bin Laden. I would like to say that... but I can’t. Largely because while interested, I didn’t care enough to see it... oops!

Zero Dark Thirty AdeleOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

If the lady with the golden pipes doesn’t take home the golden man, well... I’d be shocked. Reaching vocals, powerful lyrics and quintessentially Bond. That’s why I’m voting ADeLe for the win...

Bradley CooperOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

It’s about time Cooper proves he’s more than just People’s Sexiest Man Alive, and play the manic-depressive Pat is more than proof. It’s solid gold. If Day-Lewis wasn’t in the competition, I think Cooper’s depth of character would bring Oscar home.

Daniel Day-LewisOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

To say that Day-Lewis became Lincoln, is like saying the sky is blue and the ocean is wet - it’s a given. His strenght and stillness locked you into the movie and brought this man out of history and put him on the silver screen. Only one way to describe it: Genius.

Hugh JackmanOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

every man (or woman) has a struggle, but Jean Valjean gets more than his fair share. Yet, he pushes through and lets it out. If nothing else, the scene of him singing for his future in the church - Impressive.

Joaquin PhoenixOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Pheonix plays a newly-released Navy man who gets caught up with the wrong crowd... as in a religion that has a striking resemblance to Scientology. Interesting. Doesn’t look like it’s all fun & games...

Denzel WashingtonOSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Washington is a phenomenal actor. Present, full of life, and totally THeRe. His performance is enough that I really want to breathalyze my next pilot... and never want to fly upside down!

Denzel Washingtonhappy 50th,Mr. Bond

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Jessica Chastain

While I didn’t see the movie, Chastain’s Maya is not someone I’d want to get on the bad side of. Determined, single-minded, and focused are the words that come to mind. And talent!

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Jennifer Lawrence

She can’t seriously be only 23... can she? The depth and richness of her Tiffany is astounding. Both aching and pushing. J. Law is a brillant blend of authentic, real and (in the end) hopeful.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Emmanuelle RivaWhat do you want to accomplish when you’re 85? How about getting nominated for an Oscar for the first time and being the oldest best actress nominee eVeR. Astounding.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Quvenzhené Wallis

Attention Overachievers: Were you nominated for an Oscar at 9? Didn’t think so... Wallis brought amazing power, raw emotion and a sweet hopefulness to the rough bayou that seemed beyond all varieties of hope. Way to set a record, girl!

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Naomi WattsAs a mother supporting her son after the 2004 tsunami, Watts shows unbelieveable strength even with all the odds stacked against her. You feel the disaster because she brings you in. Impossibly.

they had it coMing...

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

As the real producer making a fake movie for the CIA, Alan brings to life what could be a Hollywood cliché and makes it feel authentic and honest.

I wouldn’t want to face Thaddeus Stevens in a debate, but I’m sure glad he was there when we really needed him. Lee Jone’s performance is contained and fiercely intelligent, your IQ rises just watching it.

Smooth talking and quick thinking Dr. Schultz has a lightness to his bounty hunting. And the heart Waltz brings to the character shows how being a leader is showing someone their own strength, even against the odds.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Charismatically creepy, Hoffman brings life to a L. Ron Hubbard-like spiritual leader. And while I missed his performance, I’m sure it was nothing short of wow.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Weaver’s Dolores is the perfect foil for De Niro’s Pat Sr. She make the snacks and he gets obsessive over football. But what these two really do is provide an emotional home for their struggling son, and you feel it with every look and each sigh. That’s love.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

There is something about Amy. A seeming sweetness that brings you in, but as the wife of Lanchaster Dodd...let’s just say she more than meets the eye. A lot more.

Whoa, Mary! Field brings the slightly crazy wife of Lincoln to life and I do mean to life. With passion and fervor, she pushes the president and stands by her man.

OSCAR WAtChliSt 2013

Helen Hunt

Helping people can be an art. Healing them a challenge. So, watching Hunt play Cheryl as she helps the severely disabled Mark... it’s beautiful. She makes you feel for herself while she cares for him. Well done.

If there was any safe bet this year, it would be Hathaway as Fantine. While her screentime was short, her impact was massive. With one song she cemented her place as a Hollywood powerhouse. Way to go, Anne!

paperman

Magic doesn’t have to take a long time... the proof is this lovely short by Disney. Blending hand illustrations with computer work, it’s 6 minutes are simply lovely.
