Worldwide Business Opportunities for Swiss Companies through International Financial Institutions. Become familiar with the processes & projects of the African (AfDB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).January 26, 2011 at Hotel St. Gotthard, Zurich. From 13h30 until 19h30.
How Swiss companies can secure contracts funded by International Financial
Institutions (IFIs).
The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) provide
billions of dollars per year in loans and credits to support projects in developing coun-
tries and emerging economies. The aim of these investments is to alleviate poverty and
to improve the quality of life for people living in these countries. The industry sectors
covered are varied and include agriculture and natural resources, education, energy,
environment, health, transportation, urban development, water supply and sanita-
tion.
How can Swiss companies participate in the thousands of ongoing projects financed by
these IFIs? This question, and related topics, will be at the heart of our upcoming infor-
mation event in January 2011.
The overall objective of this Osec program is to help participating Swiss companies bet-
ter understand the «business environment» of the IFIs, and to provide crucial information
and advice to Swiss companies regarding business and investment opportunities avail-
able through IFI-funded projects. Bidding on IFI-funded projects is not as complicated
as often believed.
There are three types of IFI-funded contracts awarded by executing agencies within
borrowing governments: goods and equipment, civil works, and consulting services.
Contracts are awarded as a result of a competitive bidding process during project
preparation and implementation. In addition, companies often have the possibility to
participate as investors in many of the projects funded by IFIs.
Identifying business and investment opportunities available through IFI-funded projects
can appear complex, and it is important for Swiss companies to understand the rules
and procedures. Osec is sponsoring this program to help participating Swiss firms better
understand the IFIs and how to successfully identify and pursue business opportunities
through projects they finance. Crucial information and advice for Swiss companies will
be provided first hand by our panellists.
The 2011 program is comprised of a January information event in Switzerland and mis-
sions to the ADB in March and to the AfDB in April. Swiss-based experts on the IFIs will
accompany participating enterprises on the missions and provide complimentary coach-
ing and advisory services.
Business opportunities funded by the ADB and the AfDB.
Information event
An integral part of our IFI program is the comprehensive information briefing to be held
in Zurich on 26 January 2010. Speakers will include a senior official of the ADB, the
Government of Switzerland representative at the AfDB, other Swiss Government officials,
and private sector executives who have experience working with the IFIs.
Business Development Missions
The next stage of the program will build upon the January information event, and will
include business development missions to the headquarters offices of the ADB and the
AfDB.
The following two missions are planned for 2011:
• Manila, March 1 – 4, 2011 (ADB)
• Tunis, April 27 – 29, 2011 (AfDB)
These business development missions will include one day of briefings by senior staff
and the Government of Switzerland representatives at each IFI, followed by one day of
individual meetings between the participating Swiss companies and staff members of the
IFIs. The individual meetings will be arranged based upon the specific business interests
of each company.
Note: The March 2011 mission to the ADB in Manila will take place in conjunction with
the 2 – 3 March 2011 Business Opportunities Fair (BOF) that is organized by the ADB.
Swiss companies participating in this mission will therefore derive additional benefit from
the BOF event.
Representatives of Swiss consulting firms, goods and equipment manufacturers and
construction companies are all welcome to participate in the information briefing in
Zurich, and in the business development missions to Manila and Tunis.
Key observations from previous IFI information briefings
• Switzerland is a member country of the five major multilateral development banks: the
ADB, AfDB, EBRD, IDB, and World Bank. Companies from Switzerland are eligible to
bid on tenders financed through projects supported by these institutions.
• A total of approximately 100 billion Swiss Francs (annually) in funding is provided by
these five IFIs for projects in developing countries and emerging economies.
• Despite the tremendous opportunities that exist for the private sector in Switzerland,
less than one percent of all contracts funded by IFIs are awarded to Swiss companies.
• As experience from our previous events and business development missions has
shown, with the right information and the appropriate network, bidding on and winning
contracts financed by the IFIs is achievable for Swiss companies.
This event is being supported by Osec with funding from the Confederation’s Stimulus
Program (special funding package), which is designed to provide immediate and effec-
tive support to the Swiss economy.
