This group meets during the second semester of the year as a regular class and enrollment is required. There is a Jazz Lab class that is offered during the same hour fi rst semester which is open to any interested student that is also enrolled in a regular band or orchestra class.
Auditions for the Falcon Jazz Ensemble should be completed prior to Spring Break. It is up to the student to contact Mr. Coughlin and arrange a time and place for the audition. In most cases, this can be accomodated at the school the student attends.
For the auditions, the student will need to be prepared on the following:• The swing excerpt below. Play within the tempo range indicated, observing articulations and dynamics
that are marked.• Play Work Song on page 2 (from Abersold, Volume 13 “Cannonball Adderly”). Play through the written Work Song on page 2 (from Abersold, Volume 13 “Cannonball Adderly”). Play through the written Work Song
part one time.• Optional – if you would like to demonstrate your ability to improvise, download the MP3 fi le for Work
Song from the File Cabinet page at www.osbands.org or request a CD from Mr. Coughlin. Improvise with the chord changes listed above the written part or the solo section in the second part.
• Optional – you may also play an excerpt of your choice…it can be from a piece you are working on or have previously performed.
