Oratorio Society of QueensMission Statement
Th e mission of the Oratorio Society of Queens is to engage, educate and uplift the Queens community by presenting musical programs that span the repertoire from great choral masterpieces to popular all-time favorites.
We are a community-based chorus and accomplish our mission by:
• providing our diverse membership of volunteer singers with joy-fi lled rehearsal and exhilarating performance experiences that expand their musical abilities, build community and richly contribute to the cultural life of Queens
• off ering opportunities for local high school and college students to learn music theory, voice production, stage presence and civic responsibility by attending regular rehearsals and performing with the chorus, professional soloists and orchestra
• presenting holiday and spring concerts which are widely-recognized as the premiere choice for Queens audiences who want to hear excellent choral music
It's with a heavy heart that we tell our friends of the passing ofDonald "Don" Smith. Don had been a long-time member of OSQ
since the early 1980s and served as President of the Board in the 1990s.He was a major force in helping OSQ to become what it is today. His foundational work in creating the structure and operational
procedures gave OSQ the ability to function smoothly and effi ciently - to grow and prosper more than we ever dreamed possible.
We are forever grateful. Rest in peace.

She has sung the Ethiopian princess to great acclaim with Nashville Opera, Memphis Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Minnesota Opera and Opera Omaha. She has performed as Tosca with Pacifi c Opera Victoria, Minnesota Opera and Houston Ebony
Opera where she also sang a memorable Suor Angelica in 1998. A native of Connecticut, Ms. McMillian studied music at the Juilliard School.

A fi ve-time Grammy Award, two-time Emmy Award winner, and three listings in the Guinness Book of World Records, Mr. Easterlin continues to make appearances at America’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, and Los Angeles Opera, as well as the Wiener Staatsoper, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra National de Paris, and Teatro Real. A master puppeteer and certifi ed magician, he became the only opera singer to win at the Cannes Film Festival for his dual performance as Jack O’Brien and Toby Higgins in the fi lm adaptation of Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and also the fi rst American opera singer to receive the prestigious
Olivier Award in his debut at London’s Royal Opera House as Prince Nilsky in Prokofi ev’s Th e Gambler. Career highlights include creating roles in two world premiere operas: Andy Warhol in the Philip Glass opera, Th e Perfect American, and Larry King in Anthony Turnage’s Anna Nicole.

CANTOR JERRY KOROBOW lives with his wife Zo-An in Roslyn Heights, and has two grown, married daughters, Jenna and Marisa. Jerry has many years of experience as a professional performing, touring and recording singer/instrumentalist and actor. Having worked as a social worker, public school music teacher, and still working as a full-time practicing attorney on Long Island, he brings a very unusual and interesting background to his work as the Cantor of Temple Am Echad in Lynbrook, NY. Now in his twelft h year there, Cantor Korobow has had the great good fortune of working with Maestro David Close as his accompanist, music director, and musical co-conspirator. Together, they have created “Jazz Shabbat,” “Peter, Paul & Mary Shabbat,” “Rock Shabbat,” “Gospel Shabbat” and “Klezmer
Shabbat” services, to mention just a few. Th ey are always looking for new and exciting musical programs and opportunities. Along the way, Jerry constantly encourages musical participation, whether that involves a classroom of children, an audience or a congregation.

Lots of Latkes
Many things are associated with Chanukah…dreidels, lights, a miracle, the story of the struggle for religious freedom, the victory of the forces of good exemplifi ed by the rededication of the Temple at Jerusalem and the humble latke, a potato pancake eaten during the eight days of the holiday.
Many cultures have a version of the potato pancake…none so visible at this time of year, as the Eastern European version that people enjoy in celebration of Chanukah. Th e story of the oil and the lamp that burned miraculously for eight days, since there was only enough oil for one night, is symbolized by the oil in which the latkes are prepared.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.We praise you,we bless you,we adore you,we glorify you,we give you thanks for your great glory,Lord God, heavenly King,O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father.Amen.

O Come, All Ye Faithful
“O Come, All Ye Faithful” originally written as “Adeste Fideles” is a Christmas carol which has been attributed to various authors, including John Francis Wade, John Reading and King John IV of Portugal.
Th e hymn has been translated into many languages. Th e English translation of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” by the English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley, written in 1841, is widespread in most English speaking countries. Wade included it in his own publication of “Cantus Diversi” (1751).
Th e original text has been from time to time attributed to various groups and individuals, though it was more commonly believed that the text was written by an order of Cistercian monks.
Adeste fi deles, læti triumphantes,Venite, venite in Bethlehem.Natum videteRegem angelorum.Venite adoremus, Venite adoremus, Venite adoremusDominum.
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant!O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;Come and behold himBorn the King of Angels:O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,Christ the Lord.
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above!Glory to God, glory in the highest:O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;Jesus, to thee be glory given!Word of the Father, now in fl esh appearing!O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,Christ the Lord.
Ma'oz Tsur
Of all the music for the celebration of Chanukah, Ma’oz Tsur is perhaps the best well known. Its melody is the leitmotiv that runs through the liturgy supplying the music for many of the prayers during this season of light and hope. Th is hymn tells of the struggle of the Maccabees and their subsequent victory over those who would dare to take away their religious freedom. For us today, this song is a rousing reminder of the courage of those brave heroes who risked their lives that later generations would be free to worship as they choose.
Ma'oz tsur yeshu'ati, lekha na'eh leshabe'ah.Tikon beit tefi lati, vesham toda nezabe'ah.Le'et takhin matbe'ah mitzar hamnabe'ah.Az egmor beshir mizmor hanukat hamizbe'ah.
Rock of ages, let our song praise Your saving power; You, amid the raging foes, were our sheltering tower.Furious, they assailed us, but Your arm availed us,And your word broke their sword, when our own
strength failed us.
Children of the Maccabees, whether free or fettered,Wake the echoes of the songs, where you may be
scattered.Yours the message cheering, that the time is nearing,Which will see all people free, tyrants disappearing.

Th at’s Brianna, and she’s one of our students in our Student Choral Program.Th e ProgramStudents are awarded a scholarship to become part of the chorus for one year (students will be re-evaluated annually to renew their scholarship). All expenses – dues, music, tutorial assistance and access to master classes taught by professional singers – are covered by OSQ. Students will rehearse weekly with the chorus (September through May) and perform in two concerts accompanied by a professional orchestra.RequirementsStudents must be full-time high school or college students in good academic standing, with a sincere interest in learning and performing choral music consisting of classical sacred music such as Handel’s “Messiah,” Mozart’s “Requiem,” Beethoven’s “Hallelujah” (Mount of Olives), holiday music and American spirituals and popular music. Students are required to have an audition to determine their voice range and placement within the chorus.
