Brain FactsWHY learn times tables?

Many children do not see the benefits in devoting time to learn times tables, so this week Professors Duggan and Chandler visited Stage 2 and Stage 3 classrooms to explain.

Our brains can only hold limited pieces of information in our working memory at one time. When faced with a challenging mathematical problem, we rely on our working memory to temporarily store relevant facts needed in order to reach a solution. By learning times tables to the extent where we have immediate recall, we are shifting these multiplication facts to our long term memory thus freeing much needed space in the working memory.

Long Term Memory Tip: The Five Times Repetition Formula

If you review your learning FIVE times, your memory will be able to keep the information in your brain FOREVER!!! Here’s the secret:

1. Review your work one hour after learning something new.

2. Then review again the next day

3. A week later devote time to reviewing the learning again.

Year 2 Camp Out With KidsOn Friday 13 March, Year 2 had their annual Camp Out With Kids. The children were so excited in the lead-up to this event that it was hard for them to believe it was finally here.

After days of beautiful weather we were met with some rainy weather on Friday night. It was great to see the positive attitudes and the smiling faces continue despite the wet weather.

This program is designed to create an atmosphere where children can spend quality one-on-one time with a parent or carer together in a fun, safe outdoor environment without the distractions of TV, phones or computers.

The evening consisted of setting up tents and sleeping bags on the oval followed by interactive games, songs, dancing and shared story telling as well as meaningful opportunities to honour each child. Our parents were fully dedicated to not only enjoying but valuing this precious time with their child and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The children have been continuing with their camp activities in class and it has been interesting for us to note the numerous ways the valuable issues raised during the Camp Out are now evident in their discussions.

Miss Newham, Miss Read and Mrs Campton - Year 2 Teachers

Student/Parent/Teacher Learning Journey SharingAn integral component of our SH-LINKS program is the opportunity for the children to share their learning journey thus far this year with their parents. All parents from Year 1 – 6 would have received notification about these meetings that will be occurring from 30 March through to 1 April. Bookings are to be made through the online PTO system.

If you have concerns about your child’s progress or need to speak with the teacher without your child present, please make an alternate time.

Sunshine Avenue Campus Parking Unfortunately I continue to hear reports of parents who are disregarding parking regulations. These people are not only being extremely inconsiderate, they are also placing pedestrians in danger.

I urge you to be cognisant of the parking signage and to follow the School’s pick up and drop off procedures. If your child is not yet independent in buckling their own seatbelt in the afternoon or in being able to leave the car unassisted in the mornings, please do not utilise the turning circle area at these times.

Lindisfarne Jamhubs at Mahers Lane CampusOur music programs at Lindisfarne seek to encourage curiosity and imaginative thought where students take ownership for their own learning. The aim of our programs is to motivate students first, before moving them into other musical and learning styles. Our new performance set ups do just that. Two weeks ago we unveiled three new Jamhubs which include: a selection of guitars (acoustic and electric), bass guitars and associated leads and amps, mixers, keyboards, a digital drum kit, microphones, tuned and non-tuned percussion and other melodic and harmonic instruments as required.

Each Jamhub enables students to work together collaboratively and also acts as a silent recording studio. The focus on practical music making is supported by new curriculum programs which are fully integrated with listening, practical music making, improvising and composing. The prime objective is to make music learning as practical an activity as possible. These programs focus on learning done ‘with’ and ‘by’ students, not ‘to’ and ‘for’ them.

To encourage performance confidence within the school community, a bi-weekly lunchtime concert program has

been introduced. This will be run by the students, attended by performers only and supported by a

series of invited practising musicians who will provide feedback directly to the students.

Better Buddies PicnicAs part of our Better Buddies Program, Kindergarten and Year 4 children will be celebrating the end of first term with a special “Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ on Thursday 26 March. The picnic will be held in the preschool playground. Children are asked to bring their usual lunch and a favorite teddy bear to share the occasion.

News from 6FG

This term has been an extremely busy time in 6 Fulgent (shining brightly). Students have arrived each day armed with a Growth Mindset, ready to learn and take on new challenges. We have been exploring the concept of diversity in English and read a number of picture books related to this. Science has been an exciting time as we have been studying the properties of solids and liquids. We are all looking forward to making ice cream this week and choosing our own flavours. Many of our students have represented the School in a number of sports including swimming, rugby union and soccer. We are off to a flying start and are looking forward to what the rest of the year brings.

“It’s Okay to be Different” by Jake, Bailey and Lukas

In English, 6 Fulgent (6FG) has been learning about diversity. We have read a book called “It’s Okay

to be Different.” by Todd Parr. Each student then created their own book with a targeted

audience of Year 2 (7-8 years of age). We were required to write the text and draw

the pictures. Students have been

researching about Todd Parr. Todd is an American author who writes picture books about differences and more. We have also written “It’s Okay to be Different“ books with groups from different classes. When we have finished these books the teachers will send some of them to Todd Parr himself.

KindergartenFor the past couple of weeks Mr Pettit has been running Health/Science lessons during Kindergarten rotation times. The unit is called “From Paddock to Plate” and has been investigating the benefits of good nutrition and the process that some foods go through before they reach our tables.

One week we looked at the process that milk goes through before it is ready for us to drink. We have been comparing unprocessed foods with highly processed foods. We have learnt that in most cases, foods in their most natural states are much better for us than those that are highly processed as they are more likely to be full of sugar, salt, preservatives and other additives.

This week we began investigating some aspects of food packaging. We found that food in its most natural state is also more beneficial to the environment. It is less likely to be packaged in materials such as plastic that are rarely recycled and end up harming the environment, and leftovers can be

used in compost which is great for the garden. We made some posters to put up in our classrooms.

PreschoolLooking at our ‘Feelings’ in the Joeys’ room.

We have been reading many of Trace Moroney’s ‘feeling’ books over the past few weeks. She has written a story for each emotion. These stories have been carefully written to help children better understand their feelings and in doing so gain the self-trust needed to deal with and have control over their different emotions. ‘When I’m feeling angry’ has helped develop the children’s understanding that it is ok to feel angry, BUT it is not ok to hurt our friends when we are angry. We have discussed and modeled different ways for the children to vent their anger in safe ways. We have been singing ‘When you’re happy and you know it’, using different actions to highlight our different emotions. The children love it when we break out into laughter and find that everyone’s giggles are contagious.

A mirror was used to observe different faces we pull depending on how we feel. The children had fun exploring our angry, happy and sad faces. We decided to take photos of each of the children using different facial expressions. They enjoyed experimenting with using the camera and computer to help capture these faces. There has been lots of expressive language used to describe our facial expressions. We have incorporated this learning into our art area and the children have made their own ‘Feely’ faces.
