Welcome to Ohio State University ExtensionOttawa County!!
We are very excited to announce our new 4-H Educator for Ottawa County, Liz Hirzel! Liz spent her first week on the job at 4-H Camp at Kelleys Island.
Liz is an Agricultural Economics graduate from the University of Kentucky, and began her career as a Commodity Merchandiser in southwest Indiana. Her passion for teaching farmers how to
market their grain, combined with her love of 4-H, ultimately led her to pursue an educational role in the 4-H world. A Wood County native, Liz grew up in the 4-H program, and rounded out her experiences as the 4-H Program Student Assistant for two summers. Her favorite projects included sewing, showing cattle and sheep; she also looked forward to 4-H Camp and the county fair each year. She is so excited to join the Ottawa County community and looks forward to meeting all of the 4-H families,
volunteers & community members!

Fair Clean Up
Summer 2019 Page 3 OTTAWA COUNTY 4-H FAMILY NEWSLETTER
We are looking for 4-H Clubs to volunteer their time during the week of the fair to help clean up after livestock shows in the show barn. As most of us know there are many shows held throughout the fair and with each show comes a little mess. We are asking for two clubs to give their time after each livestock show to clean up trash, wipe down bleachers, and assist with setting up the show arena for the next show.
Brooms, buckets, and rags will be provided. Since the work will be somewhat dirty, we suggest you bring your own gloves for sanitary purposes. Unfortunately, because of the show ending times being flexible there is not a set time that each show will be over. At the conclusion of the show your club will be paged to the show barn. Please contact Janene Lattimore (419-656-5845) to sign up for a time.

A message from the Livestock Sale Committee:
Hello Market Livestock Exhibitors!
As you are preparing your 4-H animals for the fair, please keep in mind the livestock sale is fast approaching. To help you prepare for the sale, here are three ways you can let businesses/individuals know they can support you and the sale…
1. In Person—reach out to businesses or individuals you have relationships with and invite them to the sale to support you, your project and your fellow livestock exhibitors.
• Send a personal invitation with a photo of you and your project.• Stop in to businesses and invite them in person.• Reach out to your 2018 buyers to thank them again and invite them to the sale again this year.
2. Add Ons• Businesses/individuals can contribute additional money to your project through the livestock sale
once your project is sold.• Download the “Multiple Add On” form from the fair website.
3. Buyer’s Club• Established to help those who cannot attend the sale but still wish to support exhibitors.• Contributions are pooled to make premium bids at the sale.• Buyer’s Club participants are recognized throughout the sale and after the sale with the other
market buyers.• A letter inviting businesses/individuals to contribute to the Buyer’s Club is available on the fair
website.

Good sportsmanship is about playing by the rules, discipline, respect, and self-control. A good sport has fun because they enjoy participating in the activity more than the final outcome.
As we approach the judging and fair season, remember to be a good sportsman. Whether you are taking a food and nutrition project, showing a steer, or running for a position on the 2019 fair royalty court, remember to show pride in yourself and your project by playing fair and showing respect to not only yourself but to those who are competing against you.
Here are some good sportsmanship tips to remember for the next few weeks.
1. Show respect to yourself by treating others the way you want to be treated.
2. Respect the rules of the activity and project by always playing fair.
3. Offer encouragement to other participants, especially when they make mistakes.
4. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake and get right back in the game.
5. Lose without pouting and win without gloating.
