In addition, you’ll meet new friends, visit with staff from campus departments and learn important information that will help you be a successful Cowboy.

We’re eager to answer questions and help you start your future at OSU. Call us at 405-744-3636 to ask any questions or just share your excitement!

You can begin registering for an orientation and enrollment program on Feb. 1 at newstudents.okstate.edu. Click “Freshmen” to view the summer enrollment calendar and choose your program date.

OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY FRESHMAN ESSENTIALS 3

BEFORE ORIENTATION & ENROLLMENTYou must complete these five steps before your orientation program.

STEP 1CommunicatE With Us O-Key

To register for your New Student Orientation & Enrollment program, you need your O-Key account information. If you haven’t activated your O-Key, which also establishes your OSU email address, visit okey.okstate.edu and follow the activation steps.

OSU Email

We send all official communication only to your OSU email, so it’s essential to check this account at least once a week.

Access your OSU email at email.okstate.edu. If you’ve forwarded your email to another personal email account, be sure to identify @okstate.edu as a “safe sender” so you don’t miss any important information.

STEP 2Your OSU Home Residential Life

All freshmen are required to live in university-approved housing. Even if you plan to join a fraternity, you should complete your housing application in the event you change your mind or housing space is unavailable in your chosen fraternity. Room selection occurs based on the date your housing application is submitted and deposit is paid, so the earlier, the better! Register for housing at reslife.okstate.edu.

STEP 3 Paying for College Scholarships & Financial Aid

Your application for admission was also your application for scholarships. For your best chance at being considered for our extensive scholarship opportunities, submit answers to our application essay questions and any leadership or community involvement. We also encourage you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so you’re eligible for all possible scholarships and financial aid. To ensure you’re fully considered for all OSU scholarships, you must submit test scores and transcripts by Feb. 1.

You may continue to send test scores, transcripts and other items until July 1 to update your file for maximum scholarship and financial aid consideration.

Step 4

Register for Orientation You can begin selecting an orientation and enrollment program on Feb. 1. Register online at newstudents.okstate.edu. We offer both overnight and one-day programs, as well as dates that complement Camp Cowboy weekends.

Step 5

Take the Math Placement Exam Starting May 1, incoming students should take the Math Placement Exam before their orientation and enrollment program.

Visit placement.okstate.edu/math to identify the best way for completing the exam based on your academic progress.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION & ENROLLMENT4

SELECTING YOUR ORIENTATION & ENROLLMENT PROGRAMFor your orientation and enrollment, you may choose between an overnight program or one-day program.

Student ProgramsOvernight Programs (Recommended)

Overnight orientation programs benefit students and parents who would like more time to work through the enrollment process and maximize their campus experience.

During the overnight program, you will:

More information regarding testing will be included in the confirmation packet you receive after you register for your program.

One-Day Programs (Alternate)

If you can’t attend an overnight program, we offer alternate one-day programs. These programs are designed for students who have attended multiple academic campus events, are certain of their degree choice and can make decisions quickly. During this enrollment day, you will meet with your academic adviser in the afternoon to enroll for classes, while family members attend a family information session.

Check-in for the one-day program begins at 8:30 a.m. The program concludes by 5 p.m.

Family Programs

Family Orientation

A successful college experience requires a partnership between you, your family and the university.

We recognize your family plays a pivotal role in your success and have created a family program for them that runs parallel to your session.

Families will learn about OSU culture, academic services, scholarships and financial aid, campus safety, parental rights and important campus resources. If you choose the overnight program, your family can attend the academic preview with you on Day 1 to help you make some enrollment decisions before you finalize your class schedule on Day 2 with your academic adviser.

Each adult guest must pay a $25 family orientation fee, which covers some meals, parking, printed materials and other resources. You can pay this fee online and list your family members when you register for your orientation program.

Future Cowboy Program

For guests ages 12 to 17 attending orientation and enrollment, we offer the Future Cowboy Program, which allows participants to experience OSU by exploring campus, learning about the academic colleges and majors and touring Gallagher-Iba Arena and Boone Pickens Stadium. Those ages 15-17 can also join one of our OSU campus tours for part of the day.

Each participant in the Future Cowboy Program must pay a $10 fee, which covers meals and other materials. As with adult guests, this fee is paid online when you register for your orientation.

“The best thing about OSU is the people. Within one semester, you already have your OSU family. Those are the people who make every day in college special. Those are the people who you’ll have for the rest of your life.”

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION & ENROLLMENT6

ORIENTATION DATES every summer, OSu manages the available seats in high-demand freshman courses throughout the enrollment dates, providing students who can’t attend early sessions an equal opportunity for enrollment choices. Students interested in the Honors College are encouraged to attend earlier sessions, as Honors classes are not managed throughout all dates.

*You can connect your orientation and enrollment program with a Camp Cowboy weekend on these dates.

Camp Cowboy (optional, but so much fun you won’t want to miss it!)

Camp Cowboy is an exciting three-day experience filled with connections to other new students and current OSU student leaders. Participants engage in team-building activities, small-group discussions and campfires to help learn personal strengths and ways to get involved on campus. Participating in Camp Cowboy makes your transition to college easier by creating a support network before you move onto campus.

The camp charge is $170, but some registration waivers are available. Call 405-744-0383 or visit campcowboy.okstate.edu for more information about Camp Cowboy and/or registration fee waivers.

CHOOSING YOUR MAJORChoosing the right academic path isn’t always easy. You should consider the decision from many angles to find the best fit for you. Almost every degree leads to an array of career choices, depending on how you focus your interests, knowledge and abilities. OSU divides degree programs into six academic colleges, which we encourage you to research and explore before your orientation program.

When you applied for admission, you indicated the degree you wished to pursue. If your interests have changed, you will have the opportunity to request a major change when you register for your orientation program. If you’re unsure about your path, it’s best to wait until orientation to make any changes. We will verify your decision to change degree areas when you check in for your orientation program.

It’s important to understand your major declaration could affect college- or degree-based scholarships. For this reason, if you have received any such scholarships, you’ll want to be careful about changing your major area since it could nullify your scholarship. If you are changing into a degree area where you may be awarded scholarship opportunities, you should make an official change of major before orientation by emailing the Office of Undergraduate Admissions ([email protected]) from your OSU email account to request changes be made immediately for scholarship reasons.

“One of best things about OSU is the homecoming experience. After participating in Football Frenzy, the pep rally, the sign competition, Harvest Carnival and pomping or welding for countless hours, you can be exhausted. But when Walkaround comes and 80,000 people get to enjoy the house decs, all those hours are worth it and the sense of community is unmatched.”

Students deciding between majors housed in different academic colleges or those who are uncertain about their academic path may be advised through the LASSO Center. In addition, students admitted through alternative admission programs are advised and receive specialized services through the LASSO Center. Because LASSO advises majors across the university rather than within a specific college, its services focus on transition and major exploration opportunities. Once a course of study is decided on, students transition to the appropriate academic college to complete their degree.

Students pursuing careers in law or medicine may be “pre-law” or “pre-med” from any major. Choosing a degree area only because it includes a “pre-law” or “pre-med” option is not always the best decision. Choosing the degree area most closely related to your overall interest or other career options is key. Academic advisers and career consultants can help explain various degrees with courses and experiences that will prepare you for professional school.
