Otaki Potters Greetings,

We are calling for people who are

interested in tutoring adult

classes in 2013. If you are

interested in taking a class for 8

weeks, a short course for 4 weeks

or working in a team with someone

else please contact Margaret Hunt

asap. Courses can be quite

specific, such as “a four week orb making workshop” or a short

course on “Introduction to clay sculpture”. Other classes may be

more general in nature and

continue over a longer period of

time. We know that there are

members who are skilled in

particular aspects of pottery who may wish to share with others. We

will need to meet in November with those who are interested in taking

classes so we can publish our programme for 2013 by December 1st.

If anyone is interested in improving their wheel skills in specific forms

and would like to be part of a small group with a mentor please let me

know and we will get something up and running early next year.

The 6X6X6 Gas-fired pot competition was well supported by members;

see the report in this newsletter. The committee is planning an event

along similar lines in 2013.

The Raku Demonstration Workshop was as great success. Thirty people

turned out to enjoy the day. Phillip Hardy demonstrated his

thermodynamic barrel kiln and fired large

leaves. Tony Kale gave a thorough

demonstration of making, glazing and firing

his raku Angel fish. Mike Atkins entertained

with his knowledge of toxic chemicals, sharing

one of his Silver nitrate glazes which fired

out a glossy gold. The

“simple to make on the

spot” raku kiln proved to be

a bit of a challenge but the

thought was there and a lot

of laughs were gained. The

RAKU DEMONSTRATION WORKSHOP

Page 2: Otaki Potters - Ceramics NZingenious kettle kiln and raku masks and sculptural work. So the day had a bit of ... Our final pot-ins for the year will be held on November 26th 7pm and

after lunch raised some

interesting issues and gave

people the opportunity to

share ideas. Maureen and Alan

Hunter finished the day using

their front loading kiln to fire

large platters with red copper

oxide. Bonnie Wooller

displayed some work in Naked

Raku along with pots imprinted

with feathers and various hair.

Heather and Alec Blight

displayed their rather

ingenious kettle kiln and raku masks and

sculptural work. So the day had a bit of

everything for everyone. It was a bit blustery

and the rain came in at the end as we were

packing up but considering the horrendous

weather forecast we did really well. Thank you

to everyone to contributed to the day.

As a result of the Raku Demonstration day we

are planning an exchange with the Wanganui

Potters in 2013.

The Club Raku for members and adult students

has been postponed until Saturday 17th

November due to the College Gala being on

October 27th. We do need more dry sawdust.

The recent cleaning bee went well. Thank you to

those who did their bit. Our final cleaning bee for

the year will be in December.

The rosters for the Public Raku on December 1st

are being prepared. Beryl will be ringing around to

gain support. We need people to assist with

lifting, covering and cooling pots; a team to work

on the glazing table; selling bisqueware; people to

man the information desk and people to assist

with refreshments. Helpers to assist with the

set up and pack down. If you can’t

help on the actual day perhaps you

could contribute to the morning

and afternoon tea with some home

baking. It is important that we

get all members supporting the

event. It is a great way to

promote the club, give people an

opportunity to participate and the

chance to make Christmas

presents. It is not arranged as a

fund raising event, more as an

affordable, hands-on art

experience for the family. We

need help to get posters out; some

people are happy to

have them in the

window of their car.

Posters will be

available in the rooms

shortly. If you are a

walker, or keen to get

fit for the summer

perhaps you will help

with the mail box

drop.

If you have any seconds or

surplus pots that you would

like to donate for our stall

at the public raku please

leave them in the boxes

under the shelves in the

drying room.

Our final pot-ins for the

year will be held on

November 26th 7pm and

Wednesday 27st 10am. People can choose to make

something to go on the stall, make wheel pots or

bench work for the raku.

Talking about rosters, the gate roster for The

Festival of Pots and Garden Art is on the notice

board. I know it is early but time flies and

planning is well advanced for this event. Jude will

have more information in this newsletter.

I omitted Diane Register-Stout from the list of

members who exhibited recently at Thistle Hall

in Wellington; my apologises.

Copies of the club constitution are available to

members on request.

The November club newsletter will go out during the week

beginning the 26th.

The Kapiti Arts Trail is on the first weekend in November.

Brochures are available in the rooms. A great opportunity to get

out and see what is happening in the arts scene and be inspired to

greater things!

SIX BY SIX BY SIX COMPETITION

The 6X6X6 Gas-fired pots

competition had 63 entries which

was very encouraging.

Wilf Wright judged the work and

gave considerable thought to his

selection.

First and second prize went to

Jennifer Turnbull for her Porcelain

Bowl with celadon glaze and her

stoneware bowl with shino glaze

and brush decoration.

Third prize went to Jenny Daysh for

her stoneware sculptural dish.

Because the exhibition was of a

good standard it was agreed that

Wilf could award merits to Ern Bale

for his lidded box with Oribe glaze;

Carol Devlin for her shino beakers;

Mike Page for his goblet, Jennifer

Turnbull for her bowl with red/oribe

glaze, Margaret Hunt for her

collection of miniature porcelain

jugs, and Rod Graham for his three

pots.

Wilf came to the club day to

award prizes and make comments.

He suggested that potters

concentrate on form by looking at

historical works and works by

current potters.

He recommended that people

choose a form such as a bowl,

mug or jug, etc and focus to

develop competence in that form

before moving onto something

else.

Thank you to Brent Craig for

organising the event and to those

who participated.

FESTIVAL OF POTS AND GARDEN ART - 12–20 January 2013 - UPDATE

Firstly, thank you to the Club members who have offered their help at the Festival. Diana

Litton has offered to help with registrations. Jenny Rose and Jeavons Baillie have agreed to

set up a more streamlined administration system for payment to exhibitors. Maureen Hunter

has agreed to set up the Barn assisted by June Hogan. Jennifer Turnbull Green has taken on

the organization of the Opening. Marion Mealings has agreed to coordinate the Gate

personelle with help from June Hogan and Beryl Rowe. It’s great that the tasks are being

spread around more people as the Festival expands.

There is a chart on the wall in the Clubroom for members to put up a time and date

convenient to them to help on the gate. I know it’s early, but the whole event relies on

people manning the gate. We have adjusted the duty time this year with two shifts of

three hours, utilizing 4 people for each shift at the weekends and two during the week.

If you are travelling please take some postcards from the Clubrooms, and should you think

there is an opportunity to put up a poster contact Rod.

If you have any queries or questions about the Festival please contact Jude Whitaker.

CHRISTMAS HAMS Good quality Christmas hams and

meat are available again this year.

Please see the notice board or

contact Rod.

Payments with order please.
