Beijing (CNN) -- The death toll may climb after a series of earthquakes in southwestern China killed at least 80 people and in-jured 731, a state-run news agency reported Saturday.

More than 6,600 homes were destroyed and about 430,000 damaged in Fri-day's quakes, Xinhua said.

7.6-magnitude quake rattles Costa Rican coast

Premier Wen Jiabao in-spected stricken areas early Saturday and vis-ited the injured, the news agency reported. Wen will direct rescue operations.

President Hu Jintao called for immediate relief ef-forts, according to Chi-na Central Television.

Xinhua reported that 100,000 people have been evacuated and an-other 100,000 are in need of relocation.

Deadly trem-ors strike China

Initial estimates put the "direct economic losses" from the trem-ors at more than half a billion dollars, the news agency said.

Xinhua described the mountainous area hit hard by the quakes as poverty-stricken. It said telecommu-nications and traffic infrastructure were seriously damaged.

Four earthquakes struck near the bor-der of the provinces of Yunnan and Gui-zhou between 11:19 a.m. and 1:12 p.m. local time, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Their magni-tudes ranged between 4.8 and 5.6, accord-ing to the U.S. agency.

The first quake took place near the bor-der between Yiliang County in Yunnan and Weining County in Guizhou, Xinhua said.

All four quakes struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers (six miles), the USGS said.

A spokesman for the local government's earthquake relief center said roads to the area had been severely damaged and police, fire fighters and volunteers were working to repair them. Xinhua said landslides and rock falls had also caused significant damage and were ham-pering rescue workers' efforts to reach affected villages.

The Chinese government is under height-ened pressure to respond quickly to poten-tial sources of social unrest ahead of its sensi-tive, once-a-decade leadership change, which is expected to begin in the coming weeks or months.

High casualties among children in the 2008 Si-chuan earthquake sowed widespread pub-lic discontent in China. The government since promised to improve building safety, particu-larly in China's earthquake-prone southwest.

The quake was widely discussed on China's popular online forums Friday, where many questioned how a moderate-strength earthquake appeared to have caused extensive damage to homes and infrastruc-ture. The earthquake measured at a relatively shallow depth of 14 kilometers (8.7 miles), authorities said.

"A sub-6 magnitude earthquake and schools again collapse," one person lamented on Sina Corp.'s popular Weibo microblogging service.

It wasn't clear how many schools had been dam-aged in the quake, but some online users said one school damaged wasn't in session at the time the earthquakes struck late Friday morning.

Yiliang county, which is administered by the near-by prefectural city of Zhaotong, has a population of 585,000 people, according to the local govern-ment, and has been designated by higher authorities as an area of particularly high poverty. The county's population is largely rural and harvesting rice, corn and other crops serves as a major source of income.

Jewelry That's More Than Wearable ArtBy FELICIA CRADDOCKPublished: December 6, 2012EDINBURGH — A cascade of ice-like stones, Wendy Ramshaw’s “Necklace for Marie Taglioni” was inspired by the 1940 work of the New York artist Joseph Cor-nell, “Taglioni’s jewel casket.”

The Cornell piece in turn paid homage to the ballerina Marie Taglio-ni who, according to legend, kept a cube of ice in her jewelry box to re-mind her of a night in 1835 when she had danced in the moonlight for a Russian highwayman, on a panther skin spread across a snowbound road.

Like much produced by Ms. Ramshaw in a 50-year ca-reer, the resulting piece is more than jewelry; it is a work of art.

“There’s lots of hugely successful jewelers, but Wendy’s a step above,” said Christina Jansen, director of The Scottish Gallery, in Edinburgh, which has for the past 30 years been the launching pad for all of Ms. Ramshaw’s major shows.

“She’s in over 80 collections world-wide,” Ms. Jansen noted in a re-cent interview: “Her work has always been far more than just wearable art.”

Samsung’s exclusive Internet@TV tech-nology opens up more worlds than you can possibly imagine. And puts it all on large and brilliant screen. Effortlessly connecting to the Internet, it lets enjoy all the brilliant content the Web has to offer. Enhancing, enriching and easy, you can organize, add and delete content via its Samsung Applications library. Many mod-els even allow you to make Internet video calls, so you’re not only connected to your videos, you’re connected to your people. Immerse yourself in the infinite options.

A picture that’s smooth and clear doesn’t always magically appear. That’s why many of our latest HDTVs are equipped with a digital noise filter. When you have a less-than-perfect picture in a poor reception area, this filter reduces the analog noise created during transmission-re-producing clear images, sharp details, and bringing images back to their original beauty.

Anyone can say they have the clearest picture. But only Full HD 1080p has twice the detail and twice the resolution of regu-lar HDTV. It delivers dazzlingly, rich color and vivid details. And even corrects the errors from standard definition content. It's definitely not your father's HD.
