Depending upon their leanings, readers can conclude either that those schol- ars did not subject it to the microscopic examination of the review in question, or that they saw the forest without sniffing around the base of every tree. Given the reviewer's seemingly compulsive need to pontificate in Vaticanesque tones of infalli- bility, I strongly suspect he will opt for the first interpretation. So perhaps it is fitting that I summarize my response with this pas-

sage from another Pope's (Alexander) Essay on Criticism:

'Tis hard to say ifgreaterwant of skill

Appears in writing or in judging ill.

I happily leave to the reader the choice be- tween this Pope's alternatives, as both to the review and this response.
