How To Get There:
By Car : Access is only from the A128 Ongar to
Brentwood road at Kelvedon Hatch.
From the M11 : Take the A414 (Chelmsford) to Ongar,
then take the A128 to Brentwood.
From The M25 : Interchange with the A12, J28 take the
A1023 to Brentwood, then take the A128 to Ongar.
By Train : Nearest rail stations are Brentwood or
Shenfield. Taxis are available (about 7 miles).
By tube : From Debden, Theydon Bois or Epping on the
central line. Taxis are available (about 7 miles).
By Bus : Route 21 Brentwood-Ongar-Epping-Harlow.

the door of this rural
bungalow nestling in the
Essex countryside and discover the twilight world of the
government cold war.
Behind the blast screens that protect this bungalow is the
entrance to an amazing labyrinth of rooms built into a
hillside, encased in 10 foot thick reinforced concrete and
100 feet underground.
This is where devolved central government and military
commanders would have run the region had the UK been
attacked and nuclear war broken out.
Built in great secrecy and under strict, military security the
local villagers and contractors alike knew nothing of what
was concealed in this hillside or how it would be used.

tactical controller would react to a nuclear attack from
Britain's enemies, through to its role as Regional
Government HQ, when there could have been up to 600
personnel, possibly including the Prime Minister, organising
the survival of the civilian population in the aftermath of
the nuclear war.j
