Ottoman Empire (1299-1922)• Nomadic group from Anatolia "Turks" who were Muslim• Fierce warriors and experienced horsemen (cavalry)• After defeating Byzantine Empire at Constantinople in 1453 they became an empire• Sultan ran an absolute monarchy answering only to god• was the caliphate (Muslim religious leader) as well• The Grand Vizier was #2 and ran day-to-day affairs• Hit its height in the 16th and 17th centuries spanning across Middle East, Mediterranean, North Africa, Central Asia, and Southeastern Europe• Was extremely multicultural and adapted to surroundings• Many wars led to its decline in the 18th and 19th centuries• Empire collapsed after WWI and became modern Turkey

• known as the lawmaker he pushed empire to greatness• expanded borders and spread Persian culture• reformed laws and make school very important• was benevolent (kind) to other religions he ruled over• was the greatest Sultan during the height of empire

Ottoman Empire (1299-1922)• Very much like the Romans in that they adapted• had a successful cavalry, navy, and used modern weapons• had control over many countries but let them govern themselves with their laws and customs (Millets)• other territories had to give taxes and supply troops• an extremely diverse empire with different ethnic groups and religions• Christians and other religious groups had to obey many Islamic laws (Sharia law)• system commonly known as devshirme ("blood tax") where young Christian boys were brought up to be Muslim and taught the ways of the Ottomans and would return and lead their group of people

IB Devshirme

The Ottomans were so effective because they taught different people about their ways and religious beliefs.

Since the IB philosophy is obviously the best we are going to attempt and IB devshirme of local elementary

students. If you were to go to and pick ten children from the elementary school you attended and teach them the

ways of IB, what is a list of ten must haves to be successful so they can take it back to their people?? Rank

them by importance and be ready to share out.
