summer season brings new visitor Programs

As Denver Zoo members you have the opportunity to visit the zoo regularly. We strive to provide you with new experiences each time you visit. This summer is no

exception as we develop a new visitor program called Wake Up with the Zoo. Our trained docents will be looking for you to join them as the zoo opens, and before the day heats up, to explore our morning keeper routines in a new way. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, Roving Narrators will visit five or six animal exhibits and interpret activities that guests may otherwise miss. One of our favorite examples is the daily capuchin monkey release onto Monkey Island. Come to the zoo at opening to discover how these playful primates get to the island each day, and be the first to see them as they venture into the treetops. Ask our Main Gate Ambassadors or check signs inside the zoo gates to discover where to find the Roving Narrators each day throughout the summer.

Denver Zoo will continue to offer new twists on our main shows and demonstrations as we mark some milestones. The Wildlife Show will celebrate its tenth anniversary with your favorite animals by introducing some new zoo celebrities at two daily shows and during the informal afternoon “Meet the Animal Stars” experience. At Northern Shores our sea lion keepers will highlight Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday in a completely new show. The award-winning Predator Ridge exhibit turns five this summer. Join us as we celebrate lions, wild dogs or spotted hyenas every day at 2:00 pm with our keeper talk in Pahali ya Simba. Everyone’s favorite elephants, Mimi and Dolly, have been rehearsing this spring as well and will be featured daily in the 11:30 am Pachyderm Demonstration.

Finally, check out www.denverzoo.org to see the summer program schedule and discover tips on how to plan your day. This section allows you to check the opening time for Lorikeet Adventure, look for a zoo feeding you’ve never experienced before, or watch a video clip of the Wildlife Show. We appreciate your support and look forward to your visits all summer long!

You can make a lasting contribution to ensure the zoo’s mission of wildlife conservation, environmental education and scientific programs will continue for future generations.

Just return the postcard found in the center of the magazine to request our new, free booklet on Gift and Estate Planning today to see how you can possibly save on taxes, receive income and leave a legacy for Denver Zoo; you can also contact Josie Stewart, Gift Planning Manager at 303-376-4863, or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Denver Zoo is celebrating another birth to the zoo, a reticulated giraffe named Pongo. He was born to mother, Masika (ma-See-ka) and father, Dikembe (Di-kem-bay). The calf brings the zoo’s giraffe herd to six, including a six-month-old male giraffe named Timber. Pongo and Timber, half-brothers, already get along well. They will often walk and play together or Timber will chew on Pongo’s ear while he rests.

Giraffes are the world’s tallest land mammal and can

grow up to 17-feet tall. Pongo is only six feet two inches tall now, but will likely double his height in the next two years. An adult female weighs between 1,500 to 2,600 pounds and an adult male ranges from 2,400 to 4,200 pounds. Like human fingerprints, the markings of a giraffe’s coat are unique to each individual. Reticulated giraffes are native to the dry savannas and open woodlands of east Africa.

Do At The Zoo, Denver’s favorite summer party and Denver Zoo’s largest fundraiser,

turns 20 this year. Please join us for what promises to be the best gala ever. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of history! As we prepare to walk on the wild side one more time, we take note of the tremendous positive impact two decades of Do has provided for our animal conservation efforts.

• Predator Ridge is Denver Zoo’s award-winning habitat for 14 different African species, including lions, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs. With its spacious, more naturalistic and educational exhibits, Predator Ridge was recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2006 as Exhibit

of the Year. The $27 million exhibit was designed to re-create a portion of Samburu National Reserve in Kenya while still offering up-close views of animals and providing educational information and interaction.

• Primate Panorama is another exhibit made possible in part from the support of Do At The Zoo. This spectacular seven-acre facility very closely replicates the natural habitats of many of its inhabitants, including gorillas that roam freely in their own one-acre exhibit.

• Do At The Zoo funds paid for a portion of the construction of Denver Zoo’s Endangered Species Conservation Carousel in 2001. It is the largest carousel of its kind in the country

and features nearly 50 wooden, hand-carved animals. Over $250,000 has been generated for our field conservation programs through carousel ridership.

• In 1991, Do At The Zoo helped support Tropical Discovery, Denver Zoo’s tropical rainforest featuring a wide variety of marine life from fish to turtles and is also home to the largest indoor Komodo dragon exhibit in the world.

In its 19-year history, 32,000 Do At The Zoo guests have raised more than $7.2 million to improve Denver Zoo and its programs. Please join us for our very special Do At The Zoo 20th Anniversary to support Asian Tropics, the largest conservation project in our history.

Denver Zoo is proud to offer students in the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) discounted school field trip admission during the school year. Many school groups want to visit the zoo from the end of April through the month of May. To facilitate school bus parking during this busy period, from April 20 through June 1, the eastern portion of the zoo’s parking lot will be reserved for school buses only. This is the best way we can ensure a safe and quick entrance for school children into the zoo. We encourage members to use the parking garage for close parking during this time period.

As most buses and students head back to school by mid-day, we recommend that members consider visiting the zoo in the afternoon.

Thank you for your understanding and patience!

Do you have an unwanted vehicle and you’re not sure

what to do with it? Cars Helping Charities provides a hassle-free way to turn your unwanted car into a donation to Denver Zoo! Your gift also qualifies as a tax deduction! Cars Helping Charities has benefited more than 600 Colorado non-profits, including the zoo.

Denver Zoo is partnering with HealthONE’s Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, to give kids in our community an opportunity to vote for their favorite animal that will become the hospital’s mascot.

The mascot will be chosen from a list of five species finalists represented at the zoo. Those finalists are a mountain lion, grizzly bear, red panda, African

penguin, and river otter. Log on to www.denverzoo.org to pick your favorite today. Be sure to sign up to receive Denver Zoo’s email Zoo-Bulletin or the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children e-bulletin to see which animal won!

The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center (P/SL) has been helping families across the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains for nearly 20 years with specialized children's medical services. Construction is under way for a state-of-the-art facility on P/SL’s campus at 20th and High Street in Denver. The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL will move into its new home in 2010.

Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children is an important expansion of HealthONE's current pediatric services available at each of its acute care hospitals. Other HealthONE hospitals will become affiliates of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, ensuring the same high quality of pediatric care at each location. Some will have pediatric multi-specialty centers bringing pediatric specialty doctors directly to the community for the convenience of families who live in the surrounding areas.

Denver Zoo is proud to partner with HealthONE’s Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. We hope you will become involved in the effort to choose the best animal mascot to pounce into children’s hearts. Vote online today at denverzoo.org!

Lions and ZebrasDenver Zoo is actively involved in conservation initiatives in Kenya, including the study of interactions between lions and Grevy’s zebra. Grevy’s zebra are critically endangered, and appear to be preyed upon by lions in disproportionate numbers in comparison to more common plains zebras. Lions also are declining throughout Africa. The zoo’s conservation efforts with these important species, both at the zoo and in the wild, exemplifies our commitment to wildlife.

Share in our care of the amazing animals at Denver Zoo!

Adopt a Grevy’s zebra or African lion from Denver Zoo–a wonderful gift to give or receive– and support the zoo!

Connecting Wildlife Conservation in Kenya and ColoradoSince 2002, Denver Zoo has supported conservation and research projects in the east African country of Kenya. In recent years, our commitment to conservation in this country has increased with the creation of a post-doctoral fellowship based in Kenya, a conservation education project focused on enhancing our conservation impact there, and an undergraduate scholarship program for Kenyan students.

On May 28, Denver Zoo will be hosting a film screening of Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, winner of at least 9 awards at independent film festivals in 2008. The film documents Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai’s efforts to plant trees in Kenya. From this simple beginning of planting trees, an entire movement emerged to reforest Kenyan lands, empower women with new work, provide new sources of food and income for Kenyans, and defend democracy. The following Saturday, May 30, volunteers will have the opportunity to plant trees and restore habitat for wildlife in their own community along the Westerly Creek natural area in Denver.

Space is limited for both events, so sign up right away! To get more information, RSVP for the film, or sign up to volunteer (you may attend either or both of the events), please contact Amy Masching at [email protected] or 303-376-4935.

Volunteers for the May 30 Habit Restoration Project must be at least 10 years old. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

We’d like you to join our conservation movement!

For more information about Denver Zoo’s Conservation Biology Department and its programs, please visit our website at www.denverzoo.org/conservation/overview.asp or contact Erin Stotz at [email protected], and stay tuned to each issue of On the Wild Side for highlighted conservation projects. If you would like to support Denver Zoo’s conservation efforts, please mail your contribution to: Development Department, Denver Zoological Foundation, 2300 Steele St., Denver, CO 80205. Please specify that you would like your contribution to go toward conservation.

CoNsErvaTIoN maDE sImPlE: how can you help?

• Attend the screening of the film Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai at Denver Zoo on May 28 and learn about Denver Zoo’s conservation efforts in Kenya.

• Volunteer to help wildlife in your own community at the habitat restoration project on May 30.

• Donate children’s books about African wildlife and cultures for students in the Laikipia District of Kenya as part of Denver Zoo’s conservation education program there.

• Provide habitat for wildlife in your own backyard! By planting trees and providing shelter, water, and appropriate food for native species, you can help insects and wildlife survive in urban and suburban neighborhoods. Check out National Wildlife Federation’s Backyard Wildlife Habitat program for more information.

hi Kids! Last time we talked about how some animal babies hatch from eggs—I did! But whether you hatch from an egg or not, all animal babies have moms and dads. Some of them help protect the baby animal as it grows, and others’ jobs are done as soon as the baby is born. With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up, I thought I’d see just how smart you are about the names of adult animals and their babies. Do you think you can match the right baby to the right adult? Let’s see!

Double-crested Cormorant“What’s that big, black bird flying over City Park?” This question comes from zoo guests every spring as the cormorants return to Duck Lake to nest. These birds fly south in November and winter along the Gulf Coast. In late February, they return to reclaim and rebuild their treetop nests on the islands in Duck Lake and Ferril Lake. Double-crested cormorants are fish eaters that swim low in the water and dive to hunt for food. While the City Park lakes surrounding these islands provide great nest protection, these birds fly to several local lakes and rivers to find most of their food. Black-crowned night herons are gray and are joined by snowy egrets as the cormorants’ nesting neighbors. Check out all three species of wild birds at Duck Lake when visiting the zoo or learn more on Saturday, May 9, at Breakfast with the Birds or Migratory Bird Day. See page 5 for details.

Did You Know?• A breeding site for nesting water

birds is called a rookery or heronry.

• City Park’s two heronries rank fourth in the state of Colorado for cormorants and tie with Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge for the top site for black-crowned night herons.

• Cormorants don’t have the same oils in their feathers as ducks. This allows them to dive and be submerged longer, but that means they have to dry their feathers in the sun.

• Double-crested cormorants have two feathered “crests” during the breeding season.
