NEW SCHOLARSHIP: THE GOLDEN TICKET As many of us know, it’s not easy to become a doctor. Adding to stress, the rigorous coursework and demanding rotations, most medical students carry another, heavier burden: student debt. In 2016, approximately 86% of new DO graduates had education debt, according to a sur- vey by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. The average amount of debt was $240,331 — up from $229,934 in 2015. The prospect of debt can deter students from enrolling in medical school, or from choosing specialties like family medicine. With fewer primary care physicians, patients end up paying the ultimate price. The AOF’s new Golden Ticket Scholarship, awarde for the first time at Honors 2017, aims to help alleviate some of the burden student loans place on future physicians. The five finalists recognized this year have demonstrated financial need and yet are in the top 25% of their class, have unmatched dedication to the osteopathic profession, and are committed volunteers in their local communities. Each finalist was awarded a $5,000 scholarship with the Golden Ticket winner receiving $25,000. The winner was announced at Honors 2017. The finalists were: Daniel Sullivan, OMS III, University of Pikeville - Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine, Eric Goldwaser, PhD, OMS III, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine’s dual DO/PhD program, Kortnee Koziara, OMS III, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Ryan Paulus, OMS IV, Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine-Dublin Campus, Vanessa Halvorsen, OMS IV, Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine. The winner of the $25,000 Golden Ticket Scholarship was Vanessa Halvorsen, OMS IV. “Fourth year [of medical school] is incredibly expensive from audition rotations, to applications, to interviews and then moving for residency. I was so frustrated because my husband and I couldn’t afford all the auditions that I needed to be a viable candidate. Winning this scholarship instantly changed that,” says Student Dr. Halvorsen. Dr. Halvorsen is the Student Representative on the AOA Board of Trustees, and is a dedicated researcher, with projects recently published in the JAOA. She regularly volunteers in her community, having served as an Ambassador for the American Heart Association and as a tutor for a women and children’s center. Your support of the AOF continues to fund the Golden Ticket Scholarship and the other life-changing awards given out at Honors 2017. Take it from Student Doctor Halvorsen, who now is one step closer to achieving her dream: “The scholarships that so many of us receive alter our career both fiscally and professionally. PHILADELPHIA For one exciting night, the “City of Firsts” played host to some of the profession’s best and brightest stars. On October 6, more than 650 attendees gathered to celebrate this year’s AOF award winners at Honors 2017, held in Philadelphia for the first time in more than 25 years. “As the AOF has expanded its grants offerings, Honors has become more popular than ever, and that’s because of the wonderful supporters who believe in our mission and contribute year after year,” says Peter B. Ajluni, DO, 2017 AOF Presi-dent. This year, Honors grossed more than $450,000.

Honorary co-chairs Mark Baker, DO, Tom Cavalieri, DO, Kenneth Veit, DO, and John Ferretti, DO, welcomed guests to this year’s event with a toast in honor of the night’s award recipients.

Honors, known for being a fantastic event, is also — and more importantly — a night to celebrate outstanding osteopath-ic medical students and physicians. Their accomplishments and contributions to medicine set an example for all to follow.

“Seeing how many extraordinary candidates were nominated was awe-inspiring, and learning more about the innovative, life-changing work being done by DOs across the country has strengthened my passion for this incredible profession,” says Dr. Cavalieri.

More information about each honoree is available on our website at www.aof.org/stories.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDGeorge T. Caleel, DOThe 2017 AOF Lifetime Achievement Award was be-stowed upon the late George T. Caleel, DO, for the lasting impact he made on the os-teopathic medical profession, notably on the countless stu-dents he taught throughout his astounding career dedicated to education and advancing the profession.

While Dr. Caleel began his career as a pharmacist, he soon applied to the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM). Before even grad-uating, he was asked to take over teaching the pharmacology course. After beginning his internship, he continued teaching the course. Thus began a 60-year career at CCOM, where he eventually became vice president for clinical education.

Among his many admirable qualities was the ability to break down barriers that DOs often faced. He was a true pioneer for osteopath-ic medicine in gaining ac-ceptance in MD circles. Dr. Caleel was no less impres-sive in his private practice, becoming board certified in internal medicine before achieving certification in the then-groundbreaking field of nuclear medicine and en-

docrinology, recalled AOF President Peter B. Ajluni, DO, who selected Dr. Caleel for this award--and was one of his students.

Past leadership positions include vice president of medical affairs for the former Hyde Park and Louise Burg hospitals and chairman of the Illinois Medical Disciplinary Board. He also worked as a consultant in Washington, DC, for the Depart-ment of Health, Education and Welfare.

He was a leader within AOA osteopathic graduate medical education accreditation, chairing the AOA Bureau of Osteo-pathic Medicine for many years.

Accepting the award on his behalf was his wife of 40 years, Rebecca, and son, Sarkis. His family, praising him as a wonderful husband and father, are “forever grateful to have had him in our lives.”

PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR Ross Zafonte, DOThe AOF is proud to name Ross Zafonte, DO, as the 2017 Physician of the Year. As one of the AOF’s highest honors, the award recognizes individuals who achieve greatness through integrity, service, and leadership.

As Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Zafonte is the first DO to be a chair in any department at the school. He also serves as Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as Senior Vice President Medical Affairs Research and Education at Spaulding Rehabili-tation Network.

Dr. Zafonte is a pioneer in the field of traumatic brain injury (TBI), having authored more than 300 peer review journal articles, abstracts and book chapters. In fact, he co-edited the premier textbook on TBI, Brain Injury Medicine: Practice and Principles, and is currently directing several large clinical treat-ment trials.

As a DO working in a traditionally allopathic, prestigious institution, Dr. Zafonte is dedicated to the tenets in which he was trained. As such, he is a role model to young DOs who may feel that a career in academic research is less likely for osteopathic physicians, and has trained countless residents and fellows, DO and MD, whose careers are enhanced and even launched by

working alongside him.

Dr. Zafonte’s priority remains to provide excep-tional comprehensive care to his TBI patients. He approaches clinical care passionately, embracing his osteopathic philosophy with a multidisciplinary approach to health and wellness.

EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Richard Terry, DOThe 2017 Educator of the Year award was given to Richard Terry, DO, an outstanding teacher with an unwavering dedica-tion to passing the tenets of osteopathic medicine on to future generations of DOs.

Dr. Terry earned his degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988 and completed a family medicine residency at the University of Rochester, the first DO accepted into their program.

While he began his career in rural practice, he soon found he wanted to do more. So he began volunteer-ing to teach at a residency about 60 miles away, and then became part-time faculty, then program director and DME.

To maintain osteo-pathic education throughout residen-cy, he established an OMM depart-ment at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where he serves as Director of Medical Education.

Now an Assistant Dean of Regional Clinical Education at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and Chief Academic Officer of the Lake Erie Consortium for Osteopathic Medical Training, Dr. Terry’s primary role includes developing regional campuses and training sites that combine undergradu-ate medical education with GME training.

CARING FOR COMMUNITIESThe AOF is proud to award the Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS) with its 2017 Caring for Communi-ties Award.

A federally qualified health center, CHASS provides access to health care to south-west Detroit’s primar-ily Latino population, serving more than 11,000 individuals of all ages in 2016.

CHASS aims to lower obesity rates and improve health out-comes in its commu-nity through the Fresh Prescription program. Through the program, providers “prescribe” fresh fruits and vegeta-bles to patients, which can be filled at the on-site farmer’s market. This helps patients make the connection between what they eat and how they feel and directly aligns with osteopathic medi-cine’s whole-person approach to health.

Larry Wickless, DO, and Carole Crosby, JD, established this award with the AOF to recognize clinics serving disadvan-

taged commnuities within the United States. The award was presented to Richard Bryce, DO, Chief Medical Officer of CHASS.

RISING STAR HONOREDJulianne Sees, DO, winner of the 2017 James M. Lally, DO, Emerging Leader Award, inspires others to improve the profession and public health through her leadership.

A pediatric neuro-orthopedic surgeon and medical director of the orthopedic, rehabilita-tion, and neurology inpatient unit at Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, she is one of the only DOs practicing in her field.

Yet she seizes opportunities to promote the osteopathic philos-ophy: “I find it very interesting that a lot of my MD colleagues and patients ask me about how medicine is changing to focus on the concept of treating the whole person. I always think, as DOs, that’s just how we are.”

Dr. Sees was the youngest person ever to receive Award of Fellow from the American Osteo-pathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO) in 2016, and was recently selected as Pediatric Section Editor in Chief of The Orthopod, the AOAO journal. In addition, she is on teaching fac-ulty at several medical schools.

NOMA HEALTH FAIR Through a grant from the AOF, the National Osteopathic Medi-cal Association hosted its “Healthy You” Community Health Fair on Oct. 6, 2017, in partnership with Philadelphia’s Episcopal

Community Services St. Barnabas Mission. Hosted in a low-income, underserved community, the health fair pro-vided access to medical care for residents of three nearby shelters and others.

A live broadcast on the local radio station helped to get

the word out to local residents leading up to the event, and coverage in the local Tribune newspaper praised the event for promoting health and wellness in the community.

The mission reports that NOMA has inspired them to make the health fair an annual event.
