extrahelpings celebrates fundraisers, volunteers and supporters and the difference they make to the lives of those who are sick and vulnerable. In this issue we celebrate the first birthday of the Barnet Hospital Charity and look at the difference the charity has made to patients and visitors in our first year.

We hope you enjoy reading the stories and if you would like to get involved please get in touch. If you have your own fundraising story, or have been helped by one of the services the charity provides we would love to hear from you.

We are proud of our volunteers and fundraisers – if you have supported us we’d love to hear from you and feature your event or story.

Massage therapyThe complementary massage therapy service was launched in April 2015 and is free to patients. Nadine, the therapist has provided massages to oncology and haematology patients on the Mulberry Ward, and those attending the day unit for chemotherapy. In October 2015 we expanded the service to patients on the maternity and labour wards and we hope to continue to extend the service. A total of 3,808 massages have been provided so far.

Massage therapy is about treating the person and not the illness, and for many patients it is the high point of their day. The therapy eases pain and anxiety, lowers blood pressure, and promotes relaxation and healthy sleeping patterns.

“I feel this service helps cope with stress. The touch is what makes all the difference, very soothing and gentle, it really helps get through this trauma” (Akua, patient at Barnet)

“Amazing relaxation! Takes away all the stress and leave me feeling ready to face the next challenges! Thank you!” (patient at Barnet)

If you are interested in volunteering there are many roles available and you will be given appropriate induction, training and support. Roles vary from dementia companions, to meet and greeters. Our Sat/Nav guides help people find their way around, our ward helpers help out with basic tasks on the wards or assist patients at meal times. Alternatively there are other volunteer opportunities to help with fundraising events and activities.

YOUR VOLUNTARY SERVICES TEAM Please do contact us if there is anything we can help you with, or if you have any suggestions of ways to improve things. We are always happy to hear from you!

Tell us a little about you, how you came to volunteer with us and how long you’ve been here?I worked for a number of years at another hospital as a Care Assistant on a ward looking after younger patients. What motivated you to volunteer at the hospital?I enjoyed working with people but felt it was time for a change so about 6 months ago I looked into volunteering at Barnet. What role have you undertaken? My job title is ‘Sat/Nav’ – the title itself sometimes raises a laugh. I work at guiding and orientating mainly outpatients and visitors but trying to help anyone that arrives or looks potentially lost at the main entrance at Barnet. I have been here for about 6 months and currently come in two mornings a week. What is it that inspires you to keep coming? The daily challenge of trying to decipher where people are at and what they need. Each day can surprise you and it helps to be able to think on your feet. It’s quite satisfying – especially when you get something right! What benefits do you see to the patients and/or Trust by dedicating your time in this way?Patients often express their appreciation when you’ve got them to wherever they need to be in the hospital. Can you tell us about a particular day volunteering here that was special for you?One morning a lady arrived at the main reception desk with apparently ongoing chest pain, evidently needing A&E. So I guided her there whilst trying to keep both her and myself calm. She later came back to say thank you.

BETTER TOGETHER InJuly2014TheRoyalFree,BarnetHospitaland

Chase Farm Hospital became one large Foundation Trust. With that came the opportunity to bring the benefits Royal Free patients have through the Royal Free Charity to Barnet and Chase Farm. In June 2015 Barnet Hospital Charity was launched.

We support projects that make a big difference to patients’ experiences, from free Wifi in the hospital, to improving the environment, and providing volunteers to meet and greet you and help you find your way around. To find out more visit our website.
