OUR QUEENA MOMENTOUS YEAR FOR A BUSY MONARCH

2 x 50’ or 1 x 90’ TX 17 March 2013DOCUMENTARIES

An in-depth portrait of the world’s most famous woman by award winning producer/director Michael Waldman and bestselling royal writer Robert Hardman, Our Queen charts an extraordinary year in the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. With unique access to her family, to her staff, to her prime ministers and to her palaces during the triumphal Diamond Jubilee year, Our Queen is an enthralling study of the Sovereign. A world leader since the age of 25, how does she retain her hold on the nation’s affections when political and social currents have transformed so much around her? How does she stay true to the past, yet adapt to the present? This fascinating, observational documentary series is a study of leadership, judgement and character, of spectacular pageantry but also of great warmth and poignancy as it shows what this truly modern monarch means to Britain and the world.

CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH IIA CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT

1 x 50’ HISTORY TX 31 May 2012

The coronation of Elizabeth II was an enormous logistical operation, and an event of huge cultural significance. This fascinating documentary reveals the behind-the-scenes story of the momentous occasion, drawing on hitherto unseen archives and made with the co-operation of Buckingham Palace. The coronation was seen as an opportune moment for the British royal family to establish the meaning of the modern monarchy – reinforcing the idea of continuity and tradition, while establishing the new reign of the young queen and her modernising consort. But the sheer scale of the event, combined with jockeying by senior figures who felt they should be pivotal, threatened to turn the whole thing into a disaster.

ROYAL COUSINS AT WARTHE FINAL BLOW TO THE ROYAL HOUSES OF EUROPE

2 x 60’ HISTORY TX 5 February 2014

The First World War brought Europe to its knees and resulted in the demise of many of its Royal Houses. For the personalities involved – including King George V, Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhelm II – the tide of history brought change, tragedy and personal humiliation. While it was war that delivered the final blow, this fascinating series shows how the rot had set in much earlier and how the European royals contributed to their demise. Mismanaging their countries and mishandling foreign policy, they failed to adapt to the forces of nationalism and democracy, and so brought tumbling down their own ideal of a Europe governed by the descendants of Queen Victoria. Of the four great Imperial dynasties – Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia and Great Britain – only George V, the least personally powerful, remained standing. Monarchy, for centuries the prime form of governance in Europe, was finished as a serious political force.

Henry’s accession to the throne in 1509 was greeted with wild rejoicing. Tall, athletic, and handsome; after the reign of his father (who was found to be a dour, gloomy individual reputed for meanness), he filled the nation with hope. However, by his death 38 years later, he had earned the reputation of a tyrannical and ruthless monarch. How did the one turn into the other? Acclaimed historian, and one of the world’s leading authorities on the Tudors, Dr David Starkey presents the most detailed analysis to date of the life of this infamous British monarch. The four part series performed well for Channel 4 with an average of 2.1 million viewers and share of 8%, exceeding the slot and primetime by 27% and 24% respectively.
