January is the Month of the Most Holy Name of Jesus!

Feast day ~ January 3 St. Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians, “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (2:10). Christians have always believed that the name of Jesus is a powerful one, but many are not familiar with the meaning behind it. What does the name mean? Where did it come from? First of all, the name “Jesus” is one that was divinely given through the angelic message of Gabriel to Mary: “Be-hold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” (Luke 1:31). Out of all the names he could have chosen, God chose that name for a reason. The Catholic Encyclopedia states, “The word Jesus is the Latin form of the Greek Iesous, which in turn is the transliteration of the Hebrew Jeshua, or Joshua, or again Jehoshua, meaning ‘[God] is salvation.’” The Catechism of the Catholic Church adds, “Jesus means in Hebrew: ‘God saves.’ At the annunciation, the an-gel Gabriel gave him the name Jesus as his proper name, which expresses both his identity and his mission.” The name was a popular one in the Old Testament and during the time of Jesus’ birth. It is closely related to the name “Joshua.” For this reason the Old Testament figure of Joshua is often seen as a prefigurement of Jesus, who now leads the people of God into the true Promised Land. According to some ancient sources, “The Greek name is connected with verb iasthai, to heal; it is therefore, not sur-prising that some of the Greek Fathers allied the word Jesus with same root.” In the end, it is a powerful name, one that summarizes who Jesus was and what he came to do on earth. The name “Jesus” signifies that the very name of God is present in the person of his Son, made man for the universal and definitive redemption from sins. It is the divine name that alone brings salvation, and henceforth all can invoke his name, for Jesus united himself to all men through his Incarnation, so that “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (CCC 432).

May she rest in peace. Amen.

Help is needed forThe Carmelite Monastery in Hague The Carmelite Monastery has received a donation of two mobile homes which they would like to furnish in order to be able to receive novices this summer and also to ac-commodate their chaplain on the property in case of severe winter weather. The one home would also serve as a guest house for when their families or prospective candidates wish to visit. If you would like to be a part of this “housewarming” project, the Sisters have set up an on-line registry at Kohl’s. Enter the word “Mother” in the search box. Schreiner’s Hardware in Strasburg also has a list of items needed that can be purchsed there. Other items which could be purchased locally include: an atomic wall clock, 2 rolls shelving paper, 2 rolls of opaque contact paper, 2 waste paper baskets, 2 sets of stove top drip pans (3 small and 1 large pans in each set), and one shower curtain. Any help you can give would be gratefully received.

CHURCH DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! They are available to pick up at St. Anthony Church for those who had their picture included in the directory. St. Anthony KC Family Christmas Party

will be January 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Linton KC hall. Supper will be a potluck. The entertainment will be local entertainers. Little piano players are needed for dinner music such as those who have learned solo pieces for Christmas recitals. We will plan to eat while the food is hot then players play as we finish eating. Santa will make a stop in between entertainers. A kid-die craft table will also be available for the little ones.

The 34th World Youth Day (WYD) will take place in Panama City, Panama, Jan. 22–27, 2019. The event will be hosted during the winter to avoid the country’s rainy sea-son, which occurs in July and August— the traditional dates for WYD. The diocese’s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries will be coordinating a trip. Due to the timing of WYD 2019, the trip will only be offered to those who are 18 or older, so as not to compete with school-sponsored March for Life events, and other activities happening during this same time. Early registra-tion has already begun. Deadline to register is March 30, 2018. For more information go to www.bismarckdiocese.com/wyd.

NOTICE: Due to work that has begun in the church basement of St. Anthony Church, there will not be Fellowship following Sunday Masses until the work in completed. Thank you.

vocation view — God is not made manifest in magnificence, but in the small and the ordinary. Use your talents to manifest God’s ever faithful love for His people. (Is. 60:1-6)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Today is the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. For centuries we as Catholics celebrated this Feast on Jan. 6, but the decision was made a number of years ago (at least in the United States) to celebrate the Epiphany on the Sunday which falls between Jan. 2 and Jan. 8. “Epiphany” means “manifesta-tion.” It is on this day that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is revealed as the light of all nations. Officially Christmas is not over. In fact, the recommenda-tion of the Church is that on this day those who display a crèche, a nativity or manger scene, should replace the shepherd and sheep with the Magi and their likely animals on which they traveled as well as their gifts. However, that is all secondary to the real meaning of this day. At Christmas the Messiah Jesus was revealed to the

Sunday Readings and BackgroundsThe Epiphany of the Lord • Week of Jan. 7, 2018

Reading I : Isaiah 60:1-6Your light has come!• The showing forth of God’s glory is apparent in

today’s passage from Isaiah.• All nations will walk by Jerusalem’s light, the glory

of God within it.• The prophet announces to the people that even in

the midst of darkness, they will forever be enlight-ened by the presence of God.

Reading II : Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6We all share the same promise!• The earliest Christians, mostly Jews, struggled with

the realization that even Gentiles are included in God’s plan of salvation.

• Today’s letter points out that people in former ages did not understand that God’s mercy extended to all people.

• Gentiles and Jews are one body in Christ.

Gospel : Matthew 2:1-12They opened their coffers and presented him with gifts.• Matthew’s Gospel clearly demonstrates that all

the prophecies of old have come to fulfillment in Christ.

• As promised, Gentile wise men recognize Jesus as Messiah even when the Jerusalem sages do not.

• The official priests and scribes quote the messianic prophecies that identify Bethlehem, the city of David’s birth, as the birthplace of the Messiah. However, they do not follow their own wisdom.

Do you know?

What is Purgatory? Here is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) says:

1030. All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purifica-tion, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely differ-ent from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire: (read 1 Corinthians 3:15; 1 Peter 1:7)

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a pu-rifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come. (read Matthew 12:31)

1032. This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: “Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atone-ment for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin” (2 Maccabees 12:46). From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them. (read Job 1:5)

Souls in purgatory rely on the prayers of souls still on Earth to relieve some of their temporal suffering and speed their journey to Heaven.

For the new year I am the New Year.

I am an unspoiled page in your book of time. I am your next chance at the art of living. I am your opportunity to practice what you have

learned during the last twelve months about life. All that you sought the past year and failed to find is

hidden in me; I am waiting for you to search it out again with more

determination. All the good that you tried to do for others and didn’t

achieve last year is mine to grant -- providing you have fewer selfish and conflicting desires.

In me lies the potential of all that you have dreamed but didn’t dare to do,

all that you hoped but did not perform, all you prayed for but did not yet experience. These dreams slumber lightly, waiting to be

awakened by the touch of an enduring purpose. I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to

Christ who said, “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev. 21:5). I am the New Year.

Continued from page 5 - REFLECTIONshepherds, who were Jewish. But on this day the Lord is revealed to all nations and to the Gentiles (represented by the Magi). We are all familiar with the star the Magi followed, but we need to understand all that is happening and what it means. This all represents the Light of Christ, a Light which today we honor and commemorate. We are called to be the Light of Christ right now to those around us and those with whom we come in contact. That way we can be the disciples Christ wants us to be. The poet William Cullen Bryant captures the significance of the star the Magi followed very well when he wrote, “O Father, may that Holy Star, Grow every year more bright, And send its glorious beams afar, To fill the world with light.”
