Honor Flight movie at the Cove to support World War II Vets

On June 6, the 69th an-niversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, Coveleski Stadium is go-ing to trade in the bats, balls and gloves for tanks, vintage fighter flyovers and the movie Honor

Flight on the videoboard. The purpose of the eve-

ning is to raise awareness and funds to support Honor Flight, a national organization that takes World War II veterans in particular to see their me-morial in Washington, D.C., free of charge.

“The movie is a docu-mentary about how they detail four guys from the Midwest that go on this once-in-a-lifetime oppor-tunity,” Joe Hart, president of the South Bend Silver Hawks, said. “The one gen-tleman actually was fight-ing cancer and fought to stay alive so he had the op-portunity to go.” For the cost of a $5

ticket, attendees will be able to see the showing of the film, as well as see tanks on the ground and flyovers by historic World

War II-era fighters. Pro-ceeds will go to Honor Flight to help fund send-ing north central Indiana veterans to the National World War II Memorial. Gates at Stanley Covele-

ski Regional Stadium will open at 6 PM on June 6 with the movie set to be shown at 7 PM.

Federation Book Club

At our most recent Book Club meet-ing on May 20th we discussed “The Dovekeepers” by Alice Hoffman . We enjoyed the discussion about amazing life stories of the four complex and fiercely independent women that lived in the desperate days of the siege, surviving for many months on Masada. All were dovekeepers, and all were also keeping secrets—about who they were, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love.

The next Book Club will meet on June 17th at 11:30

AM. We will be talking about the new book “Brothers Emanuel: A Memoir of an American Family” by Ezekiel J. Emanuel

For years, people have been asking Ezekiel “Zeke” Emanuel, the brash, outspoken, and fiercely loyal eldest brother in the Emanuel clan, the same question: What did your mom put in the cereal? Middle brother Rahm is the mayor of Chicago, erstwhile White House chief of staff, and one of the most colorful figures in American politics. Youngest brother Ari is a Hollywood super agent, the real-life model for the character of Ari Gold on the hit series Entourage. And Zeke himself, whom the other brothers consider to be the smartest of them all, is one of the world’s leading bioethicists and oncologists, and a former special advisor for health policy in the Obama administration. How did one family of modest means produce three such high-achieving kids? In his new book, for the first time, Zeke provides the answer.

Annual Meeting (Continued from Page 1)

Stone will share stories from many sources-- Jewish folktales and Midrash, as well as Chasidic tales, all given interesting and lively interpretations, lifted off the page with insight and skill, and put back into true oral tradition, enlightening, thought provoking, and always entertaining. Susan's personal narratives weave throughout the pro-grams and her CD's will be available for purchase.

Join us as we thank our

outgoing leadership and welcome the new!

A f t e r w a t c h i n g the movie “The Gate-k e e p e r s ” three times

I can say with great confi-dence that this movie was not aimed so much to your minds, but rather to your guts, to your kishka. The movie brings out impor-tant insights, like the fact that Israel can’t afford not to talk to our enemies, and that peace is within our reach. Unfortunately, say-ing that, the movie does not mention all the peace efforts that were made on behalf of various Israeli governments over the past 13 years. Realizing the movie had ignored all of the above, at this point I can’t help myself and ask: what are this movie’s true motives? And how does it contribute to today’s’ in-sights about the conflict? The film does not give

appropriate attention to Prime Minister Ehud Ba-rak’s efforts at Camp David in 2000 nor does he talk about the efforts of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and the brave stepping-stone for peace he tried to make in 2005 with the unilateral Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The movie also rudely ig-nores the efforts of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to bring peace in 2008. The movie goes to a

great deal of the trouble to animate still pictures, mak-ing you re-live the events.

From the desk of the Israeli Shlicha Lea LehaviFrom the desk of the Israeli Shlicha Lea LehaviFrom the desk of the Israeli Shlicha Lea Lehavi

The movie brings out many video clips that de-scribe things that IDF sol-diers are doing in the West Bank and Gaza strip. Once again, the movie fails to mention that the Palestini-ans in those pictures, who you see being arrested, are not innocent bystanders. When the IDF knocks on

doors in the middle of the night, the person that they are coming to arrest had already brought troubles into his household before-hand. The movie also starts its chapters with "well picked" quotations. Do not let these things fool you; these are just few examples of how the movie is aiming to your kishka. Everything that Israel is

doing is in order to ensure the existence and safety of the Jewish people in Israel. Our responsibility is doing so by remaining humane and sensitive alongside maintaining Israel’s secu-rity. I believe the movie in some parts, make that very clear. Just the fact that the Is-

raeli IDF and Shin- Bet will think more about the lives of the terrorist’s fami-lies rather than their own families, giving in to enor-mous consequences in or-der to avoid collateral damage, no one can claim to us nonsense like “Apartheid,” “evil con-quers,” “No morality,” etc. With all that the Jewish people had endured throughout thousands of years, we are to be the bea-con of hope and humanity.

Reviewing “The Gatekeepers” — A kishka movie

And I say to you: we prac-tice that every minute. One of the things that

really surprised me, is when Ami Ayalon told about his childhood optimism and lack of worries, because he knew that there is “an old man at the end of the corri-dor… and he solves prob-lems… he thinks for me… Later on I was there and at the end of the corridor I saw there is no one thinking for me." As a General at the IDF and later on as the head of the Shin Bet, Ayalon was in fact a part of a very small group of people that are the ones that does the “thinking” in Israel. By say-ing there is no one thinking for him, he is actually un-dermining himself. This was very sad for me to hear, especially because once I gave him the credit as one of the people that “thinks for me.” It is interesting to know

that Ayalon (along few oth-ers from the movie) turned to politics after their term as

the heads of the Shin bet. After they were “a part of the system” they now wish to change and shape new political reality for Israelis. This is an impor-tant and much desired development. However, let us not forget that they are speaking retrospec-tively, after they had done the maximum they could for the safety of the people of Israel. Although the movie was

a “great success” outside of Israel, it’s in fact an in-ner-Israeli film that deals with philosophical ideas and different concepts of the given situation that we face in the Middle East. The fact is that in Israel, being the only democratic state in the Middle East, we have the highest sense of justice and morality. We are not afraid of intro-spection. We are also very fortunate to have the cour-age to share this with our-selves, and with our friends.

Michiana Jewish Historical SocietyMichiana Jewish Historical SocietyMichiana Jewish Historical Society Baer Family Furniture Dynasty

The Michiana Jewish His-torical Society continues to gather histories of local Jewish families and businesses. This month we focus on the Baer family, with information pro-vided by Margie Baer.

Who knew that a furni-

ture dynasty that now boasts fifteen showcases and two warehouses in South Florida would have its origins in South Bend, IN? Our story begins with Melvin Baer, son of Jennie and Berthold Baer, who grew up in Mishawaka. He married South Bend native Lucile Ciralsky, daughter of Emma and Ira Ciralsky.

In 1945, Melvin and Lucile Baer founded Baer's Home Outfitters, located on Michigan Avenue in the heart of South Bend’s busi-ness center. They were lo-cated next to the Avon Theater, and Robertson’s Department Store was less than a block away. Garnitz Furniture was across the street, and Ries Furniture was close by. Later the Baers opened stores in Goshen, LaPorte, and Michigan City.

Under their parents' lov-ing guidance, Jimmie,

Allan and Bobby Baer were taught the retail furni-ture industry at every level. While the family-owned company continued to prosper in Indiana, the Baer's Florida vision started, when Bobby moved to Florida in 1968 and opened the Dania store. The elder Baers, Mel

and Lucile, and the rest of 2nd gen-eration, Allan and Terri and Jim and Margie, eventually settled in South Florida and moved the business along with them. Today, Bobby is

CEO and Allan is Presi-dent along with the third generation in top manage-ment positions. Third generation includes Jerry and Cathy, Allan and

Terry’s children; Michael, Ira, and Larry, Bobby and Aviva’s children, and Ron, son of Margie and Jim. There are two mem-bers of the 4th generation as well carrying on the family business: David, who is Ron and Marna’s son, and Danielle, who is Eav and Jerry’s son.

At present Baer’s Fur-niture consists of 15 stores, a world class deign center, and two ware-houses including its cor-porate headquarters. Bobby Baer, the current CEO, is the key to the growth of the 15 stores. With his devoted wife Elaine, herself a remark-able ASID and past presi-dent of National Home Fashion League, continu-ously at this side every step of the way, there is

no question that the entire family is blessed by their constant presence.

The Baer family consid-ers all employees part of the Baer extended family. Baer’s has probably the lowest attrition rate in the retail furniture industry. When Baer’s Furniture moved to South Florida, three employees, including Stanley Kiser (who had taught Sunday School at Temple Beth-El) and his wife Vivian, of blessed memory, also moved to work at Baers.

Melvin and Lucile Baer were proud of their heri-tage, as were their chil-dren. All of the family, in-cluding the parents, the three boys and their wives of the second generation brought with them their values of caring for those less fortunate and espe-cially the need to be not only strong in our Jewish faith, but to give back in every way they could.

The Baer family has

The Baers based their busi-ness on one simple concept: offer customers famous brands that they can trust, quality craftsmanship and lasting designs at tremendous discounts.

been instrumental in building up the Jewish community wherever they live.

Bobby Baer was presi-dent of Temple Beth-El in Hollywood; founded Temple Dor Dorim in Weston and made honor-ary board member for life, vice president of the South Broward Federation and a board member of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Shortly after Terri and Allan arrived in Florida, both became chairs of the Ft. Lauderdale Federa-tion's annual campaign. Allan also founded the Ft. Lauderdale Jewish Com-munity Center and was its first president..

When Jimmie and Margie arrived in Boca Raton, they spearheaded the move to start the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach. Jimmie was elected its first president in 1981,

Est Gezunterhait (Eat in Good Health)Est Gezunterhait (Eat in Good Health)Est Gezunterhait (Eat in Good Health)

When planning a spe-cial occasion meal, be it for a holiday or a summer barbeque, there is a lot to consider. We focus on main courses. On salads and side dishes. On des-serts. Maybe even appetiz-ers. Not on beverages. Why bother to think of beverages. You can put out pitchers of cold water. Buy soft drinks or juices. Who needs anything more?

Personally, I like to make my own iced tea. With all due respect to Snapple and the many other tea producing com-panies, I have always ap-plied the D.I.Y. concept to tea. I have a varied selec-tion of flavored herbal teas. But it doesn’t stop there. I like making other bever-ages too. Here are some of my favorite recipes.

Do you go strawberry picking in the summer? And then, you come home with a lot of berries that have to either be used or frozen pretty quickly? Here is a great recipe for strawberry lemonade. This is a cool and refresh-

ing drink for a hot sum-mer day. Most lemonade recipes call for equal amounts of sugar and lemon juice. I find that I like to reduce the lemon juice by a small amount. You can adjust these amounts according to your own personal taste.

STRAWBERRY

LEMONADE 1 qt. strawberries 3 c. cold water ¾ c. sugar ¾ c. lemon juice (or a bit

less)

2 c. cold club soda

Clean and hull straw-berries. Blend the straw-berries together with the water. Pour into a pitcher and still in the sugar until it dissolves. Stir in the lemon juice and club soda and serve.

Sometimes I like to make punch. If a lot of people are coming over, a punch recipe that is de-signed to be served in a punch bowl yields a lot to drink. This recipe for or-ange sherbet punch can be served in a punch bowl

but can also be served in a regular pitcher as it does-n’t make such a large amount of beverage.

ORANGE SHERBET PUNCH

4 c. orange juice 1 c. milk 3 Tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. orange zest ½ tsp. nutmeg 1 c. cold sparkling water 1 qt. orange sherbet

Combine the orange juice, milk, sugar, zest, and nutmeg. (This step can be done several days in advance. Store the mix-ture in the refrigerator until serving time.) Stir in the sparkling water. If us-ing a punch bowl, put the sherbet into the punch bowl and pour the liquid on top. If not using a punch bowl, stir the sher-bet into the liquid to start to melt in before serving.

Here is my all-time fa-vorite beverage to make for a special occasion. This recipe makes a large amount so it is most suit-able for an occasion where there will be a lot of thirsty people. The recipe doesn’t lend itself to being

produced in smaller quan-tities. Sorry. Also, the rec-ipe has to be prepared the day before it is going to be served. The texture is like a slurpee, slightly frozen. This is really good. Really. SENSATIONAL SLUSH ½ c. sugar 1 (3 oz.) pkg. strawberry jello 2 c. boiling water 1 c. sliced strawberries ½ c. pineapple juice 12 oz. lemonade concen-trate, thawed 12 oz. limeade concen-trate, thawed 2 c. water 2 liters lemon-lime soft drink

Dissolve the sugar and jello in the boiling water. Process the strawberries and pineapple juice. Stir processed strawberries into the jello mixture. Stir in the thawed concen-trates and the water. Place in a container, cover, and freeze for at least 8 hours. Remove from the freezer 45 minutes before serving. In a punch bowl or several pitchers, com-bine equal amounts of slushy mixture with lemon-lime soda.

having only moved there in fall of 1976.

At the same time Margie was elected presi-dent of the Women's Divi-sion. When Margie be-came chair of the women’s division, her first priority was to get the Lion of Judah introduced to her community. She was

among the eight members of the first pride of Lions outside of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. She continues today to serve on the Federation Board and the Women’s Division Board.

The third generation Baers continues the tradi-tion of tzedakah, doing

their very best to care for those in need.

The Baers have not for-

gotten their South Bend roots and keep up with news from “back home” through friends and the Federation’s Our Commu-nity News.

MTC Banquet A Home Run! This year’s banquet was a great success simply because the entire Jewish community got together. It was great to see over 300 peo-ple in attendance. We hope to build on this momentum and have many more opportunities to bring us together.

We took the opportunity to announce two major agen-das. Firstly, we introduced our hopes for a February 2014 trip to Israel. The trip will center on bringing the Tanach to life while understanding the life and concerns of the Modern Israeli. We require a minimum of 20 partici-pants. Many have already expressed a strong interest. Please contact us with questions so we can help you pre-pare for this unparalleled trip.

Secondly, we introduced our dreams for a major ex-

pansion of the Torah Center. We hope to double the size allowing for a more formal dining area to have a kosher affair, thus, making kosher cuisine much more accessi-ble. We plan to make the first floor handicap accessible and provide a tremendous rec area for our swelling NCSY numbers. Of course we plan to expand our multi-purpose room/shul and library, too. However, we do need your help. More than anything, we need to hear your excitement for what this adds to the community. Soon you’ll receive a pamphlet with details of the expan-sion. Let us know what you like and how you think the new additions can make the community’s life a little eas-ier and more fulfilling.

Praying With Fire II Tuesdays 10:30 PM. Starting Tuesday, June 18th - August 13th, Rabbi Lindow will be-gin delving into prayer. We’ll be discussing topics such as Prayer as an Antidote for Fear, Strategies to Build Our Faith, What Are the Best Times to Pray, Praying For Others and more. If you don’t know how to pray, or do know but want to strengthen your praying ability, this class is for you. Let yourself go and believe that you have the ability to change the universe.

For scheduled classes for summer and Friday night services, please see our website www.midwesttorah.org for details and more information.
