    Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. An estimated

17 percent of children and adolescents (ages 2-19 years) are obese in the U.S.Obese children are at riskfor numerous health problems during their youth andinto adulthood. Children who are obese are more likely to have high bloodpressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes. Not Because of these health

problems, childhood obesity is responsible forover 300,000 deaths each year. The annual cost of childhood obesity is around $100 billion. Healthier habits must

    be established early on.

Children who are obese are more likely to become obese as adults. Andthe health risks continue. Numerous studies have shown that a child who is obese

between the ages of10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obeseadult. But with proper nutrition, exercise and support, children can lose the weight

and develop healthy habits for life. Not tomention the psychological toll obesityhas on children, which can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, depression, eatingdisorders and other health issues.

Join the conversation below, in the comments.

y What do you think should be done more, better or differently (in schools, on TV, athome, etc.) to prevent and stop childhood obesity?

y How do you get your kids interested in living a healthy lifestyle?y What do you think is the main cause for the growing rates of childhood obesity?

Because. the factors that contribute obesity in children and adolescents (meaning a BMI-for-ageabove the 95th percentile;see childhood obesity BMI) interact with each other, it is not possible

to specify one behavior as the cause of obesity in children. There are many factors typicallyworking in combination. Some are changeable and others are not. In some cases medicalconditions (endocrine problems, genetic syndromes, and medications) can be related withunnecessary weight gain. Even though there are some genetic and environmental causes of childobesity, its important to know that weight gain, whether leading to mild or severe clinicalobesity has various causes centering on an imbalance between calories consumed from food andbeverages and calories burnt in physical activity. Hence, lack of physical activity, unhealthyeating habits, or a combination of the two are general causes of childhood obesity, with geneticsand lifestyle both playing important roles in determining a child's weight.

Your child, need extra nutrients and calories to support normal growth and development, metabolism, and physical activity. So if they consume the calories needed for daily activities, growth and metabolism, they add pounds in proportion to their growth. But eating caloriesbeyond what's necessary to support their growing bodies contributes weight gain. If this is notreversed, the children will become obese over time which leads to serious health effects such as,high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea etc (see

    childhood obesity-

"Children who often consume more calories than they use will gain weight. Consumption of just100 calories (the equivalent of 8 ounces of a soft drink) above daily requirements will typicallyresult in a 10-pound weight gain over one year."

Many different factors causes imbalance between calorie intake and consumption in children.
