The economic environment during fiscal year 2012 continued to present challenges to LEDA as it sought to bring new industry to Lincoln County and assist our existing indus-tries in making further commitments to Lincoln County through expansions. Despite this

very challenging environment, LEDA continued our past success in new business recruitment and the provi-sion of support and assistance to the existing business community as they increased their commitment to Lincoln County. LEDA also began the process of providing assistance and support to entrepreneurs through our new Economic Gardening efforts. We are grateful to those new industries that selected Lincoln County and to our existing partners that have once again stepped forward and increased employment opportunities and investment in Lincoln County.

During this fiscal year, Sennebogen announced plans to double its facility in eastern Lincoln County and Bosch moved forward with an expansion of capacity at its Lincolnton, NC plant. The new Airlie Business Park was officially opened to new tenants, the Aptar facility in the Lincoln County Industrial Park held its ribbon cutting event and the new Hampton Inn opened in Lincolnton. LEDA sponsored the Industry Appreciation Month events, the Industry of the Year selection, the Milestone Achievement Awards that recognized our existing industries and businesses that have been in business in Lincoln County for various periods of time in five year increments, the annual Stakeholders Event that brings decision makers to Lincoln County, and convened all of the past Chairs of LEDA to gain the benefit of their collective wisdom.

The partnership between LEDA, the City of Lincolnton and Lincoln County were strengthened and expanded. The successes enumerated above would not be possible without the strong support of these local govern-ment entities and the business friendly environment this partnership creates for new industries and our existing industry partners. LEDA continues its effort to market the “west side of Lake Norman” through the Lake Norman EDA in cooperation with others interested in economic development proximate to Lake Norman.

During the course of this fiscal year LEDA continued to endeavor to increase available product for prospective industries and businesses by addition of the Airlie Business Park, the County and City joint venture to extend sewer service to the Lincoln County Airport, development of a small area plan for the potential Woodcock Farm site and an ongoing identification of potential new industrial and office park sites. LEDA is prepared for fiscal year 2013 and will continue to fulfill its mission of bringing new and greater economic opportunity to the citizens of Lincoln County.

Sincerely,

Lincolnton is Back in the Furniture Business Lincolnton Furniture will occupy the for-mer Cochrane Furniture facility with plans to employ 120 to 150 workers, many of which were former employees of Cochrane Furniture. The company will feature a state of the art furniture wood working technology and finishing sys-tem in the Lincolnton facility and specialize in bedroom and

dining furniture. LEDA was contacted by Bruce Cochrane in early 2011 who wanted to share his vision and plan and ask for any assistance available. LEDA also assisted with local incentives present-ing to the board of commissioner and city council, both incentives were approved unanimously.

“Lincolnton Furniture Company will be a desirable community addition as a place to work with competitive wages, in a safe environment, utilizing skilled American craftsmen”.

Bruce Cochrane, President and CEO

“The latest generation in woodworking machinery offers tremendous opportunities to reduce cycle times, labor and improve yields, thus reducing our costs.”

Phillip Null, Vice President Manufacturing

“I am very happy to have Lincolnton Furniture opening here in Lincolnton. Bruce Cochrane's enthusiasm and skills in the furniture industry are going to benefit the company and the many fine furniture workers here in Lincolnton. We are looking forward to the company's great success!”

LEDA celebrated with a ribbon cutting the opening of Airlie Business Park at Ingleside. The park consists of 231 acres, located off new Hwy 16 and Optimist Club Road in Denver. The development of the park is a collaborative effort between LEDA and Lincoln County. LEDA obtained the options on the 231 acres from the Clark family in order to market and sell to businesses, while Lincoln County provided infrastructure installation. Lincoln County was approved for grants, totaling $785,500 from the NC Rural Center and the NC Department of Commerce, to assist with the infrastructure of the park. Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas are both partners in this endeavor, providing utili-ties throughout the business park.

“Projects like this don’t just happen, it takes a coopera-tive effort among local government, LEDA and the citi-zens of Lincoln County; we are fortunate to have a com-mon purpose in order to initiate projects such as this.”

Tom Anderson, LEDA Chairman

“Two of our goals at the county level are to diversify our tax base and bring higher paying jobs to our com-munity. With Airlie Business Park we have a great opportunity to work towards these goals."

George Arena, Lincoln County Board of Commissioners

“On behalf of the Rural Center Board of Directors and our President, Billy Ray Hall, we thank you all for allow-ing us to be a partner on this important project. The Rural Center is dedicated to improving the quality of life for rural North Carolinians; we accomplish the mission by providing funds for infrastructure improvements. Our board awarded $580,000 to Lincoln County to assist with infrastructure in Airlie Business Park.”

George Collier, NC Rural Center

“Perseverance is what it took to make the vision of my father become reality. This vision originated over forty years ago with my father and community leaders and has finally come to fruition for the Clark family. We are fortunate that our father left us with a legacy so we can give back to the community; we appreciate the cooper-ative efforts of LEDA and Lincoln County to help make Airlie Business Park happen.”

October is Industry Appreciation MonthThe City of Lincolnton and Lincoln County officially signed proclamations declaring the month of October 2011 as Industry Appreciation Month; designed to call attention to the important role our manufacturers and distributors play in the economic well-being of our community. LEDA had an exciting event-filled month scheduled.

“October is always full of opportunities to bring attention to our manufacturers. I hope people saw our three billboards in the county, our flags flying around the courthouse and ads in the local papers. The community needs to know how important industry is to our economy and industry needs to know how much we appreciate them being here. That’s what Industry Appreciation Month is all about.”

LEDA Talks Entrepreneurism LEDA hosted an informational luncheon involving a nationally recog-nized leader on rural entrepreneurship development and included members from the local banking, business, manufacturing and various small business support organizations. Dr. Deborah Markley, Managing Director and Director of Research for the nationally known RUPRI Center for Rural Entrepreneurship, was guest speaker and brought her back-ground of practice driven research to the presentation. Dr. Markley emphasized on the essential community elements needed for rural entrepreneurial success.

To benefit from the economic contributions of entrepreneurs, a community needs to be one that is a contributor to their success. LEDA’s commitment is to help build a stronger entrepreneurial network and the creation of a program to specifically help Stage 2 Entrepreneurs. Stage 2 Entrepreneurs are existing businesses with 10 to 99 employees that have the ability to grow quickly.

“There needs to be a supportive environment made of partners that recognize and value the contributions of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs desire freedom and encouragement to innovate and support even in the face of failure. They require assis-tance when and where they need it and enjoy the importance of connecting with peers and mentors.”

Concluding a month long tribute dedicated to all industries operating in Lincoln County; October ended Industry Appreciation Month by recognizing the inter-national countries that call Lincoln County home and thanking them for their support to our local economy.

With the purpose of promoting and high-lighting the contributions and exemplary corporate citizenship of Lincoln County’s existing industries, LEDA proudly recog-nized Actavis, a pharmaceutical manufac-turer, as this year’s award winner.

Based upon four categories, this award recognizes the industry that has the stron-gest qualifications and is most deserving based on the current year. Rhonda has been the Operations Director at Lincoln Economic Development Association for the past eleven and half years. There has only been one other woman from Lincoln County to hold the State Presidents position, Hazel Andrews in 1983-84.

“As women we must believe in ourselves first; that we have the knowledge, strength and ambition to carry us through any adversity or victory because we have done it to the best of our ability”.

Manufacturers Invest in the Future of Industry

Several manufacturers in Lincoln County are pooling together to offer summer work opportunities to college students who have completed their sophomore year; and, most importantly, are from Lincoln County. The idea presented itself when members of the Industrial Manager’s Association (IMA), a membership of managers from manufacturers and distributors within the county, discussed how students could be encouraged to bring their education back to the community that raised them upon graduating from college. It was determined the best way to have graduates return home was to present them with job opportuni-ties that currently exist in Lincoln County.

“The IMA supports this program and views it as an investment in the future of industry.”

David Lee, IMA Chairman

“Unless you work with the manufacturers or within their companies, you wouldn’t realize the job potential that exists in our industrial parks and with manufacturers throughout the county. A student majoring in chemistry, engineering, informa-tion technologies, HR, accounting, marketing and many other fields, has as much of a chance finding a job in this com-munity as in any larger city. And, the potential to earn in these facilities is very enticing. As an industry, manufacturing jobs pay more than any other industry in the county including government and health services.”
