Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 23

2nd Reading: I Peter II: 20b-25

Gospel: Saint John X: 1-10

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

“Stay with us” (See Saint Luke 24:13-35). The disciples on the way to Emmaus, although had not recognized the Lord, pleaded with Him that they would abide with them. Why? A little later on the Gospel tells us: “Were not our hearts burning within us while He

spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” Yes. Jesus opened the Scriptures for them, that is, He explained the Scriptures to them. Here it seems to me that Saint Martin de Porres famous question pertains: “How about you?” Do you take time to read Scripture so that later you can explain it to others, that is, open the Scriptures to them? That’s what Jesus did and in so doing He was setting an example for us all. Not only for those who have been ordained and studied at a Seminary, but for all those who claim to be His disciples. Yes, for those who want Jesus to stay with them. Remember: He is risen! He is truly risen! Let us ask Him to “stay with us”, and at the same time follow His example and be ready to open the Scriptures to others.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

(516) 378 – 0665 (During the Second Week of Easter)

Christ is Risen! Truly Risen, and you have reached His

home at Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport during the

glorious Season of Easter 2020. If this is an emergency

and someone is dying, please call: (516) 492 – 6508.

That’s (516) 492 – 6508. Para continuar en Espanol,

oprima el 3.

Yes, with or without coronavirus, the Easter Season is

glorious! Not because people are suffering and dying.

Not because people are weeping, afraid, and doubting.

The Easter Season is glorious because the One Who wept,

suffered, and died for us who are weeping, afraid, and

dying is Risen! Truly Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

That my friends is the Good News proclaimed by the Church for two thousand years! Good News that even

in the midst of the trials levied upon us by people who govern us from both inside the Church and outside

the Church continues to be proclaimed. If you have not yet seen or heard that Good News proclaimed from

our Parish Website at www.ohrfreeport.org, please plan on tuning in for live streamed Holy Masses on

Sunday at 11:30 A.M. in English and at 1:00 P.M. in Spanish. A visit to our website can also connect you and

your children to Our Holy Redeemer School of Religious Education, and to an assortment of inspirational

and even fun resources for the whole family. Many of our recently live streamed Masses have actually been

recorded and uploaded to our Parish Website as well.

As much as Father Arcoleo would like you to connect with Our Holy Redeemer Parish online, what is most

important is that you connect to Our Holy Redeemer in Person; and that you can do without a computer,

without a smart phone, without an android, without an IPad, without a radio, without a television, …

without anything or anyone. We have been given a unique opportunity to go into our inner rooms –

without a computer, a smart phone, an

android, anything or anyone – and within that

inner room find God Who is calling us there

with the words: “Come to Me all you who

labour and find life burdensome”. God Who is

waiting for us there; not just to listen to us but

to talk to us, and to let us know (as Jesus rose

from the dead to tell us): I am with you always.”

God bless you and thank you for calling Our

Holy Redeemer Who IS with us always; even

until the end of the age. And that is the Good

News!

URBI ET ORBI MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS

EASTER 2020

Saint Peter’s Basilica, Easter, 12 April 2020 Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter!

Today the Church’s proclamation echoes throughout the world: “Jesus Christ is risen!” – “He is truly risen!”

Like a new flame this Good News springs up in the night: the night of a world already faced with epochal challenges and now oppressed by a pandemic severely testing our whole human family. In this night, the Church’s voice rings out: “Christ, my hope, has arisen!” (Easter Sequence).

This is a different “contagion”, a message transmitted from heart to heart – for every human heart awaits this Good News. It is the contagion of hope: “Christ, my hope, is risen!”. This is no magic formula that makes problems vanish. No, the resurrection of Christ is not that. Instead, it is the victory of love over the root of evil, a victory that does not “by-pass” suffering and death, but passes through them, opening a path in the abyss, transforming evil into good: this is the unique hallmark of the power of God.

The Risen Lord is also the Crucified One, not someone else. In his glorious body he bears indelible wounds: wounds that have become windows of hope. Let us turn our gaze to him that he may heal the wounds of an afflicted humanity.

Today my thoughts turn in the first place to the many who have been directly affected by the coronavirus: the sick, those who have died and family members who mourn the loss of their loved ones, to whom, in some cases, they were unable even to bid a final farewell. May the Lord of life welcome the departed into his kingdom and grant comfort and hope to those still suffering, especially the elderly and those who are alone. May he never withdraw his consolation and help from those who are especially vulnerable, such as persons who work in nursing homes, or live in barracks and prisons. For many, this is an Easter of solitude lived amid the sorrow and hardship that the pandemic is causing, from physical suffering to economic difficulties.

This disease has not only deprived us of human closeness, but also of the possibility of receiving in person the consolation that flows from the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation. In many countries, it has not been possible to approach them, but the Lord has not left us alone! United in our prayer, we are convinced that he has laid his hand upon us (cf. Ps 138:5), firmly reassuring us: Do not be afraid, “I have risen and I am with you still!” (cf. Roman Missal, Entrance Antiphon, Mass of Easter Sunday).

May Jesus, our Passover, grant strength and hope to doctors and nurses, who everywhere offer a witness of care and love for our neighbours, to the point of exhaustion and not infrequently at the expense of their own health. Our gratitude and affection go to them, to all who work diligently to guarantee the essential services necessary for civil society, and to the law enforcement and military personnel who in many countries have helped ease people’s difficulties and sufferings.

In these weeks, the lives of millions of people have suddenly changed. For many, remaining at home has been an opportunity to reflect, to withdraw from the frenetic pace of life, stay with loved ones and enjoy their company. For many, though, this is also a time of worry about an uncertain future, about

Page 6: OUR HOLY REDEEMER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH FREEPORT … · 7:30 a.m. 12:10 p.m. wed.: 7:00 p.m. (sp.) first fri.: 7:00 p.m. (sp.) ur holy redeemer oman catholic hurch where coming home

jobs that are at risk and about other consequences of the current crisis. I encourage political leaders to work actively for the common good, to provide the means and resources needed to enable everyone to lead a dignified life and, when circumstances allow, to assist them in resuming their normal daily activities.

This is not a time for indifference, because the whole world is suffering and needs to be united in facing the pandemic. May the risen Jesus grant hope to all the poor, to those living on the peripheries, to refugees and the homeless. May these, the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters living in the cities and peripheries of every part of the world, not be abandoned. Let us ensure that they do not lack basic necessities (all the more difficult to find now that many businesses are closed) such as medicine and especially the possibility of adequate health care. In light of the present circumstances, may international sanctions be relaxed, since these make it difficult for countries on which they have been imposed to provide adequate support to their citizens, and may all nations be put in a position to meet the greatest needs of the moment through the reduction, if not the forgiveness, of the debt burdening the balance sheets of the poorest nations.

This is not a time for self-centeredness, because the challenge we are facing is shared by all, without distinguishing between persons. Among the many areas of the world affected by the coronavirus, I think in a special way of Europe. After the Second World War, this continent was able to rise again, thanks to a concrete spirit of solidarity that enabled it to overcome the rivalries of the past. It is more urgent than ever, especially in the present circumstances, that these rivalries do not regain force, but that all recognize themselves as part of a single family and support one another. The European Union is presently facing an epochal challenge, on which will depend not only its future but that of the whole world. Let us not lose the opportunity to give further proof of solidarity, also by turning to innovative solutions. The only alternative is the selfishness of particular interests and the temptation of a return to the past, at the risk of severely damaging the peaceful coexistence and development of future generations.

This is not a time for division. May Christ our peace enlighten all who have responsibility in conflicts, that they may have the courage to support the appeal for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. This is not a time for continuing to manufacture and deal in arms, spending vast amounts of money that ought to be used to care for others and save lives. Rather, may this be a time for finally ending the long war that has caused such great bloodshed in beloved Syria, the conflict in Yemen and the hostilities in Iraq and in Lebanon. May this be the time when Israelis and Palestinians resume dialogue in order to find a stable and lasting solution that will allow both to live in peace. May the sufferings of the people who live in the eastern regions of Ukraine come to an end. May the terrorist attacks carried out against so many innocent people in different African countries come to an end.

This is not a time for forgetfulness. The crisis we are facing should not make us forget the many other crises that bring suffering to so many people. May the Lord of life be close to all those in Asia and Africa who are experiencing grave humanitarian crises, as in the Province of Cabo Delgado in the north of Mozambique. May he warm the hearts of the many refugees displaced because of wars, drought and famine. May he grant protection to migrants and refugees, many of them children, who are living in unbearable conditions, especially in Libya and on the border between Greece and Turkey. And I do not want to forget the island of Lesvos. In Venezuela, may he enable concrete and immediate solutions to be reached that can permit international assistance to a population suffering from the grave political, socio-economic and health situation.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Indifference, self-centeredness, division and forgetfulness are not words we want to hear at this time. We want to ban these words forever! They seem to prevail when fear and death overwhelm us, that is, when we do not let the Lord Jesus triumph in our hearts and lives. May Christ, who has already defeated death and opened for us the way to eternal salvation, dispel the darkness of our suffering humanity and lead us into the light of his glorious day, a day that knows no end.

With these thoughts, I would like to wish all of you a happy Easter.

Now a Word from Pope Saint John Paul II about Saint Joseph the Worker

BY THE WORK OF HIS OWN HANDS

2. Today the Church is honouring Saint Joseph, the "just man", who in the humility of the shop in

Nazareth by the work of his own hands, provides support for the Holy Family. Today, therefore, is above

all the day of men of work. To you, therefore, workers, farmers, artisans, fishermen, to you workers of the

land and the sea, who with daily sweat earn what is necessary for your families, I wish to address in a

special way my thought and my word in order to point out for your reflection the example of one who,

having shared your experience, can understand

your problems; take up your anxieties, direct your

efforts toward the building of a better future.

Saint Joseph stands before you as a man of faith

and prayer. The Liturgy applies to him the word of

God in Psalm 89: "He shall say of me, 'You are my

father, my God, the rock, my Savior'" (v. 27). O

yes: how many times in the course of long days of

work would Joseph have raised his mind to God to

invoke him, to offer him his toil, to implore light,

help, comfort. How many times! Well then, this

man, who with his whole life seemed to cry out to

God: "You are my father", receives this most

special grace: the Son of God on earth treats him

as his father.

Joseph invokes God with all the ardor of his soul as a believer: "my Father", and Jesus, who worked at his

side with the tools of a carpenter, addressed him calling him "father".

A profound mystery: Christ, who as God directly experienced the divine fatherhood in the bosom of the

Most Blessed Trinity, had this experience as a man through the person of Joseph, his foster father. And

Joseph in his turn, in the home in Nazareth, offered the child who was growing beside him the support of

his well-balanced virility, his far-sightedness, his courage, his gifts which every good father has, deriving

them from that supreme source "from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name" (Eph

3:15).

THE GREAT ROLE OF FATHERHOOD

A great role, this role of fatherhood, which not a few parents today have tried to abdicate, opting for a

relationship on a par with their children, which ends up depriving the children of that psychological

support and that moral backing which they need to successfully get through the precarious stage of

childhood and early adolescence. Someone has said that today we are experiencing the crisis of a

"fatherless society". We notice ever more clearly the need to be able to count on fathers who can fulfill

Page 8: OUR HOLY REDEEMER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH FREEPORT … · 7:30 a.m. 12:10 p.m. wed.: 7:00 p.m. (sp.) first fri.: 7:00 p.m. (sp.) ur holy redeemer oman catholic hurch where coming home

their role, combining tenderness with seriousness, understanding with strictness, camaraderie with the

exercise of authority, because only in this way will children be able to grow harmoniously, overcoming

their fears and preparing themselves to meet courageously the unknown factors in life.

But where, dear fathers, will you be able to draw the energy necessary to assume in various

circumstances the right attitude that your children, even without knowing it, expect from you? Saint

Joseph offers you the answer to this: it is in God, the source of all fatherhood, it is in his way of acting with

men, which is revealed to us by Sacred Scripture that you can find the model of a fatherhood capable of

making a positive impression on the educational process of your children, not smothering their

spontaneity on the one hand, nor abandoning their still immature personality to the traumatizing

experiences of insecurity and loneliness on the other.

SPECIFIC MORAL VALUE

3. Joseph and his most chaste spouse, the Virgin Mary, did not abdicate the authority that was theirs as

parents. It is very significantly said of Jesus in the Gospel: ". . . and he was obedient to them" (Lk 2:51). A

"constructive" obedience, which the walls of the home in Nazareth witnessed, since it is also said in the

Gospel that thanks to that obedience, the Child "progressed steadily in wisdom, age and grace before God

and men" (ibid. 52).

In this human growth Joseph guided and supported the boy Jesus, introducing him to the knowledge of

the religious and social customs of the Jewish people and getting him started in the carpenter's trade,

whose every secret he had learned in so many years of practicing it. This is an aspect that I feel compelled

to stress today: Saint Joseph taught Jesus human work, in which he was an expert. The Divine Child

worked beside him, and by listening to him and observing him, he too learned to manage the carpenter's

tools with the diligence and the dedication that the example of his foster father transmitted to him.

This too is a great lesson, beloved brothers and sisters: if the Son of God was willing to learn a human

work from a man, this indicates that there is in work a specific moral value with a precise meaning for

man and for his self-fulfillment. In the Encyclical Laborem Exercens, I mentioned precisely that "through

work man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his own needs, but he also achieves fulfillment as a

human being and indeed, in a sense, becomes more a human being" (n. 9)

How can we not recognize then the great dignity of work, whatever kind it may be in its concrete

expression? How can we not see the fundamental role that it fulfill in the life of the individual, of the

family, of society? Unfortunately, greed and egoism have often pushed men to abuse the intellectual and

physical talents of their fellow men and to impose upon them working services that are revealed in

various ways to be harmful to their personal dignity. Against these deteriorations of labor relations unions

justly arise to defend those whose legitimate rights they see trampled.

If this is just and merits approval, an attitude would be incomprehensible that would succeed in

questioning work as such, not recognizing its providential role' indicated in the first Biblical command:

"Subdue the earth!" (cf. Gen 1:28). This role Saint Joseph recognized and accepted in his life, transmitting

to the young Jesus who was growing at his side the spirit of joyful readiness with which he resumed his

daily task every morning. For this too Saint Joseph stands before the Christian people as a shining model

of life, to whom every father can and must look in the concrete choices that are imposed upon him by the

responsibility of a family.

CALL ON SAINT JOSEPH

4. "I have made you father of many nations" (Rom 4:17), was

proclaimed a short time ago in the First Reading of the Mass.

The words which God spoke to Abraham, at the time already

old and still without offspring, the Liturgy applies today to

Saint Joseph, who did not have any carnal offspring at all.

And we who are reflecting on his personal experiences can

quite appreciate the suitability of this approach. After having

been a special instrument of Divine Providence with regard

to Jesus and Mary, above all during Herod's persecution,

Saint Joseph continues to carry out his providential and

"fatherly" mission in the life of the Church and of all men.

"Father of many nations": the devotion with which Christians

of every part of the world, encouraged in this by the Liturgy,

turn to Saint Joseph to confide their troubles to him and to

implore his protection confirm the singular fact of this

limitless fatherhood.

Therefore look with confidence to Saint Joseph, you men and

women of Molise and Abruzzo, persevering in a devotion

that is so deeply inscribed in the traditions of your ancestors.

Is he not a magnificent example for every committed lay

person who within the parish and the various ecclesial

movements wants to give courageous witness to Christ?

Have recourse to Saint Joseph, particularly you priests and

religious, you consecrated souls, who in his virginal chastity and spiritual fatherhood see the highest ideals

of your vocation reflected. He teaches you love for meditation and prayer, generous fidelity to

commitments assumed before God and the Church, selfless dedication to the community in which

Providence has placed you, however small and unknown it may be. In the light of his example you will be

able to learn and appreciate the value of all that is humble, simple, hidden, of what is accomplished,

without show and without clamor, but with decisive results, in the unfathomable depths of the heart.

And you, families of today, who are experiencing rapid changes in modern society and suffering their

sometimes worrying repercussions, you can find in the family of Nazareth, which Joseph watched over

with anxious care, the ever-present model of a community of persons in which love assures an

understanding that is daily renewed. Invoking Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the members of every family of

your ecclesial communities can rediscover in the various moments of their lives the joy of the reciprocal

gift, the comfort of solidarity in trials, the serene peace of those who know how to count on the

omnipotent, even if mysterious, Divine Providence.

"He shall say of me, 'You are my father'". Like Saint Joseph, you too must invoke the heavenly Father with

persevering and fervent prayer, and you will experience, as he did, the truth of the following words of the

Psalm: "Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him, and my covenant with him stands firm" (Ps

89:29). 01 May 1983

Week Fifteen Selection

Bishop Venerable Fulton J. Sheen On the Philosophy of Charity

Excerpt from “Old Errors and New Labels” For us, the source of charity is not the will of men, but the will of

God. The origin of charity lies not in effective

human groupings but in divine life, and hence its

development or unfolding is not horizontal, like

the history of a human institution, which begins

with men and ends with men, but vertical,

beginning with God at its summit, and ending

with man as its term. According to our

philosophy, charity begins within the bosom of

the Triune God, for charity is the definition of

God. From out that infinite source, charity

comes in a never-ending procession, reaching down to our own days.

Because charity is naturally expansive and enthusiastic, God by a free

act willed that others should share His Love, and so Omnipotence

moved and said to nothingness, “Be”; eternity moved and said to time,

“Begin”; Light moved and said to darkness, “Be light”—and lo! Living,

palpitating things were seen moving among Eden’s fourfold rivers. That

life rebelled against its God, but charity could not keep the secret of its

love, and the telling of the promise of better things was Revelation. God

was emptying Himself. He revealed His power in His Creation, His

plans in His Revelation, and now last of all, He reveals Himself, and the

tiny a baby hands that clutched at straws and were not quite long enough

to touch the huge heads of the cattle, were the hands of Charity

Incarnate—Jesus Christ.

FAITH AND EDUCATION

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL

The De La Salle School continues to navigate through these difficult times. Coronavirus has impacted us in many ways, most profoundly for those who battle this disease in their families or professions. Our school community has experienced directly the challenges of this disease. Several of our families are experiencing first-hand the effects of COVID-19 and have been forced to self-quarantine. Many of our families have members of their household who are still working on the front line in grocery stores, emergency response teams, and healthcare. We hold them all in prayer!

Our students, however, persevere in their studies and their teachers continue to emphasize the importance of the values that are recited in The De La Salle School Affirmations. They continue to meet daily with their teachers continuing their studies. This Monday we began our 4th and final quarter of the academic year and our 3rd Quarter Report cards were mailed home. In lieu of traditional parent/teacher conferences, parents and faculty are speaking one-on-one via phone discussing the progress of their sons and areas for improvement. A parent/teacher teleconference was held via Google classroom on Friday evening with almost all families participating.

We are all anxious for the day when we can bring our students home to 87 Pine Street. When that day comes, the image of the stained glass window in the entrance of the school will be an even more powerful symbol of a Lasallian community welcoming those entrusted to our care in the name of Saint John Baptist De La Salle. I pray for that daily.

The De La Salle School exists to provide a Catholic School education to young men whose families cannot afford the tuition at other Catholic middle schools. Our fifth-grade class for September still has some openings. Any parent who is interested in enrolling his/her son in our 5th grade class for September is encouraged to act soon while seats are still open. Applications during this time of school closures should be mailed to the school. Those who may need an application can call Mr. Gault at (718) 490-4443.

We continue to hold all of the parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer in our prayers and ask all of you to continue to pray for the success of our school and our students.

¡Gracias!

Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle. Words can go horizontally, vertically, and diagonally in all directions (as shown).

That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village … called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had

occurred. While they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them, but

their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk

along?” They stopped, looking downcast. … “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the

things that have taken place there?” He replied, “What sort of things?” They said to Him, “The things

that happened to Jesus the Nazarene. …. We were hoping He would be the One to redeem Israel; and

besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. …. He said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! … Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into His glory?” … As they

approached the village, He gave the impression that He was going on farther. But they urged Him, “Stay with

us.” … So He went in to stay with them. … While He was with them at table, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes

were opened and they recognized Him, but He vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us

on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” Saint Luke XXIV: 13-35
