Celebrating Our 100th Anniversary

Our Mission The mission of our Parish is to reach out to all people and encourage them to join us in joyfully giving praise and glory to God; to build a Christian community that, with trust in God, embraces the future, and in doing so, is a beacon of faith, hope and love on the Jersey City waterfront.

Dear Parishioners,

Last week, Catholic Schools throughout the United States celebrated Catholic School’s week. At Our Lady of Czestochowa School we are particularly proud of our school. Little Harbor Academy and OLC School have a combined enrollment of 350 children for this academic year. This enrollment number represents an increase of 50 students from the prior year.

In the face of declining enrollment numbers for many Catholic Schools, this year’s enrollment numbers are particularly impressive. In large measure, we can attribute the increased enrollment to the outstanding efforts of the school principal, Mrs. Stefanelli. As Mrs. Stefanelli progresses through a second term at OLC School, she continues to tirelessly work to improve the school.

Mrs. Stefanelli works closely with the teachers providing programs for continuing teacher development. As an adjunct professor at Kean College, she knows how important it is that the teacher staff stays highly qualified. This bears great benefits in the classroom for the students. As a result of her work with the teachers, she has been able to expand programs and introduce new programs. This has resulted in additional classes and an increased enrollment.

While classroom instruction is important, other activities in the school have helped to make the student’s learning relevant in practical applications. One such example is the school’s “Boat Building” project. The students are using what they have learned in the classroom to build an actual boat, not a model boat, but rather a boat that they will actually launch in a local waterway.

However, working with the teachers and students is only one aspect of her endeavors. Mrs. Stefanelli has been very approachable maintaining an “open door” policy with any parent wishing to speak to her. Her rapport with teachers, students and parents alike has been excellent.

Last year Mrs. Stefanelli created a steering committee to introduce a Home School Association. At this time the Home School Association is up and running and they have already sponsored a number of activities and social functions.

As we celebrated “Catholic Schools Week,” OLC had much to celebrate, and these are just some of the highlights. There will be more about our school next week.

With love,

Preparation for children to receive their First Holy Communion will begin on Wednesday, March 2. Classes will be held at the OLC School beginning at 3:15 pm. This year, second graders and those third graders who did not

receive First Communion last year will be prepared. Parents, please contact the rectory should your child need to receive this sacrament

Because of the size of the group for First Communion, there will be two dates offered: May 8 and May 15. For those parents who wish to enroll their child in the program, please contact the rectory.

It is the generosity of faithful Catholics like you that inspired the theme for the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, “Serving the Lord by Serving Others.” The theme is based on a passage in the thirteenth chapter of St. John’s gospel, which reads, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”

Please help us continue to assist the poor with food, shelter and clothing; offer the young religious education, guidance and CYO athletics; provide for the future of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most importantly, bring Christ’s saving message to

the people of the Archdiocese. I ask for your support by making a generous

gift to the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. I know giving is more difficult during these poor economic times, but I also see the needs, and they are greater than any time in recent history.

Please keep me in your prayers and know that you are always remembered in mine.

Sincerely in the Lord,

R Most Reverend John J. Myers

The Archdiocese is once again preparing to celebrate the annual tradition of honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2011. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Archbishop Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. See the dates below:

June 5, 2011at 3:00 pm: 50 Years Bergen and Hudson counties June 12, 2011 at 3:00 pm: 25 and 5 Years

All counties The Archbishop desires every couple deserving

of such recognition be present at the appropriate liturgy so he can personally honor them.

In the first reading, Isaiah urges us in the name of the Lord to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and clothe the naked. If we do so, he assures us, the Lord will hear and answer our cries for help in time of need.

Thank you so very much for your financial support. Many of our parishioners believe that it is important to financially support their parish. Thank you for living your financial commitment. Your support helps us to achieve our weekly collection goal of $6,000 per Sunday.

For the weekend of January 29/30 there were 365 people who attended Mass. The total weekend collection came to $5,900 (of that amount $2,070 came from parishioners making their contributions electronically through Parish Pay). This amount is $100 BELOW our weekly goal of $6,000 per Sunday.

To date, the Christmas collection has risen to $69,017. There is still time if you haven’t made your “Christmas Gift” to OLC.
