Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners.

(Pray three times.)

Our Lady of Fatima AnniversaryOn May 12 and 13 Pope Francis will visit Fatima to commemorate the 100th

anniversary of Marian apparitions there. In 2013 he dedicated his pontificate to Our Lady of Fatima.

In Fatima, the Pope will canonize Jacinta and Francisco, two of the three children who received the apparitions. Not long after Our Lady appeared to them, both died from the influenza epidemic which killed millions worldwide. Their short, simple lives were dedicated to prayer and sacrifice for sinners, in response to Our Lady’s requests.

Sr. Lucia’s Cause Has AdvancedSister Lucia, the oldest of the three Fatima children, who

was 9 at the time of the apparitions, died in 2005 at age 97. She spent 57 years as a Carmelite nun, after first living as a Dorothean sister.

Our Lady spoke to Lucia from May to October 1917. Mary told Lucia that she must learn to read and write because Jesus wanted her to convey messages to the world.

In 2008, three years after her death, the cause for sainthood for Sr. Lucia was begun. Pope Benedict XVI waived the usual five years required, as he had done for Pope John Paul II. February 13, 2017, the diocesan phase of the canonization process was completed.

Sr. Lucia’s writings have been published in many languages. They reveal that she wondered why the Lord chose “such poor and ignorant children” to fulfill His plans. She wrote of her encounters with the Blessed Virgin Mary, who stressed the need for penance, reparation and prayer, especially the Rosary.

St. Pope John Paul II is referred to as the “Fatima Pope.” He attributed the miracle of his surviving the assassination attempt of May 13, 1981, in St. Peter’s Square, to the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima. On May 13 of the following year, he went to Fatima in thanksgiving. The assassin’s bullet is encased there in the crown of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

Of special interest to the local Rosary family: In 1974 Dorothy Westfall of RFR, while in Fatima on pilgrimage led by Phoenix Bishop Edward A. McCarthy, had the privilege of interviewing Maria, the sister of Sr. Lucia, through an interpreter. Maria said her sister, Lucia, was very ill with a lung condition. Maria said Lucia repeats, “Pray, pray, pray!”

Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima with RFR!

Sister Lucia Proclaimed:“There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the HOLY ROSARY.”

RFR is hosting a Pilgrimage to Portugal, Spain & France, October 30 through November 8, 2017. Fr. Tom Enneking, OSC, will lead RFR pilgrimage to Fatima and Lourdes. Contact Janet at 602-863-1218 to register or get brochure www.myfaithjourneys.com/login, Group # 17037. Strongly consider joining us.

In the spring of 1916 at Fatima, Portugal, an angel appeared to three shepherd children: Lucia Dos Santos, 9; Francisco Marto, 8; and Jacinta Marto, 6. He said, “Fear not, I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.”

They prayed as the angel did, saying: “My God, I believe, I adore, I trust and I love You. I beg pardon for all those who do not believe, do not adore, do not trust and do not love you.”

Many people say this efficacious prayer several times daily.

In the summer of 1916 the angel appeared to the children again and urged them to pray and sacrifice continually in reparation for sins and the conversion of sinners. The children often repeated the prayer the Angel had taught them.

In autumn of 1916 the angel appeared for the third time, giving them a powerful prayer to the Holy Trinity. See prayer on program page.

Jacinta and Francisco’s young lives of prayer and sacrifice are a model for us.

On our Program recently Valerie Stagg reminded us that our offering up of crosses and sufferings can be a rich channel of grace for others, in accord with Our Lady’s plea for reparation and conversions.

Valerie’s reflections are a great blessing to RFR listeners.

Ascension of Our Lord – Thursday, May 25Jesus promised to be with us always. Although He ascended to His Father, He is ever present to us in His Church, in His Word, and in His Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.

After Christ’s ascension, the Apostles and Mother Mary gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem as related in the Acts of the Apostles 1:14. “All these with one mind continued steadfastly in prayer…” This group included men and women, all followers of Jesus. They were preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit. This is considered the first novena.

We should also regard this period after the Ascension as a time of powerful prayer to receive the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit Novena available through EWTN website
