us pray for his continued good health and that God will continue to bless him as he serves the Fatima Parish Family.

FATIMA MERCY WORKS — a MONTHLY outreach to the needy in our community.

Activity details are listed on our web page. If you would like to participate, call the Parish Office.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

In today’s second reading, St. Paul thanks the Philippi-ans for being willing to share in his hardships and promises that God, in turn, will fully supply all their needs. Our God truly cannot be outdone

in generosity!

The Weekend of October 7th & 8th

Envelopes / Cash ......................... $14,545.00 Online Giving ................................ $8,244.00 Total Offertory Collection ... $22,789.00 Envelopes / Cash .............................. $125.00 Online Giving ................................... $975.00 Total Mercy Works ................. $1,100.00

Good News: The Diocesan Centennial Campaign was very successful, with Fatima receiving in pledg-es (over a five year period) over 2 million dollars. Thirty percent of our goal of $1,170,000.00 will be returned to Fatima; thereafter fifty percent of what is collected will eventually be returned to us. Bad News: Since the Campaign, our weekly collec-tions are substantially lower. This is understandable and to be expected. This is a friendly reminder to do what you can to keep our weekly operation budget running smoothly. Online giving is a wonderful way to make sure you are up to date. Thanks, Fr. Russo.

THE MIRACLE OF THE SUN

An Eyewitness account by Dr. José Maria de Almeida Garrett, Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Coimbra, Portugal

“It must have been 1:30 p.m. when there arose, at the exact spot where the children were, a column of smoke, thin, fine and bluish, which ex-tended up to perhaps two meters above their heads, and evaporated at that height. This phenomenon, perfectly visible to the naked eye, lasted for a few seconds. Not having noted how long it had lasted, I cannot say whether it was more or less than a minute. The smoke dissipated abrupt-ly, and after some time, it came back to occur a second time, then a third time. “The sky, which had been overcast all day, suddenly cleared; the rain stopped and it looked as if the sun were about to fill with light the coun-tryside that the wintery morning had made so gloomy. I was looking at the spot of the apparitions in a serene, if cold, expectation of something happening and with diminishing curiosity because a long time had passed without anything to excite my attention. The sun, a few moments before, had broken through the thick layer of clouds which hid it and now shone clearly and intensely.” “Suddenly I heard the uproar of thousands of voices, and I saw the whole multitude spread out in that vast space at my feet...turn their backs to that spot where, until then, all their expectations had been focused, and look at the sun on the other side. I turned around, too, toward the point com-manding their gaze and I could see the sun, like a very clear disc, with its sharp edge, which gleamed without hurting the sight. It could not be con-fused with the sun seen through a fog (there was no fog at that moment), for it was neither veiled nor dim. At Fatima, it kept its light and heat, and stood out clearly in the sky, with a sharp edge, like a large gaming table, The most astonishing thing was to be able to stare at the solar disc for a long time, brilliant with light and heat, without hurting the eyes or dam-aging the retina. [During this time], the sun’s disc did not remain immo-bile, it had a giddy motion, [but] not like the twinkling of a star in all its brilliance for it spun round upon itself in a mad whirl.” “During the solar phenomenon, which I have just described, there were also changes of color in the atmosphere. Looking at the sun, I noticed that everything was becoming darkened. I looked first at the nearest objects and then extended my glance further afield as far as the horizon. I saw everything had assumed an amethyst color. Objects around me, the sky and the atmosphere, were of the same color. Everything both near and far had changed, taking on the color of old yellow damask. People looked as if they were suffering from jaundice and I recall a sensation of amusement at seeing them look so ugly and unattractive. My own hand was the same color.” “Then, suddenly, one heard a clamor, a cry of anguish breaking from all the people. The sun, whirling wildly, seemed all at once to loosen itself from the firmament and, blood red, advance threateningly upon the earth as if to crush us with its huge and fiery weight. The sensation during those moments was truly terrible.” “All the phenomena which I have described were observed by me in a calm and serene state of mind without any emotional disturbance. It is for others to interpret and explain them. Finally, I must declare that never, before or after October 13, 1917, have I observed similar atmospheric or solar phenomena.”

FROM THE PASTOR ON FRIDAY THE SCHOOL CHILDREN OF FATIMA BURIED A TIME CAPSULE (located near the ramp of Knight Hall). The Time Cap-sule will be opened 100 years from now during the celebra-tion of the bicentennial of the Fatima apparitions. Several items were included in the

Time Capsule: Letters from the Bishop and the Fatima Prin-cipal and Students, photos, magazines, coins and stamps, etc. In the coming months, the bulletin will include copies of some of the letters enclosed. We begin this weekend with the letter from Fr. Russo. Enjoy!

October 13, 2017 The 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun and the Burial of the Centennial Time Capsule

To the Pastor and Parish Family of Our Lady of Fatima, Greetings in the name of Our Lord and Savior and of His Holy Mother! When you read this I pray that I will be able to join you, as an intercessor in Heaven, to celebrate with the angels and saints this Jubilee Year of the 200th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. We have spent this year learning about the important message Our Lady left to the world, many of us having witnessed the events that unfolded in the 20th century - the rise and fall of Com-munism, the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II’s life, and the fruit of conversion which comes from the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Our First Saturday Masses have been packed with people from all over the Diocese, hoping to gain a plenary indulgence which the Vatican has granted to those who attend Masses here on the First Saturdays and on the 13th of each month. What a beautiful liturgy we celebrated on May 13th, with our Bishop, Douglas Deshotel as celebrant (his ordination anni-versary date). We began our closing celebrations of the Centenni-al Year with a Rosary Congress - so appropriate and powerful - even with the threat of a Hurricane (Nate) hitting the Louisiana coast this same weekend. And, at this writing, we will “officially end” this anniversary year with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Glenn John Provost, Bishop of Lake Charles and former Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, this coming Sunday, October 15th. Today, October 13th, is the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun. In addition to burying the Time Capsule which you have now opened, we blessed and dedicated a beautiful Pathway of the Little Shepherds, which I hope you are still able to enjoy. The blue and white tile depiction of the Little Shepherds was hand painted in Portugal. The work was done in memory of Mrs. Jus-tine Elder, who was a dear friend, like a Mother to me. She loved the story of Fatima. I was blessed to travel to Fatima, Portugal, with her and her husband, Roy, on more than just one occasion. She died this past March 25th and I miss her very much. Pope Francis sits on the Chair of Peter. His emphasis on God’s Mercy and love for the poor has moved the hearts of the world. His election to the papacy came after an historic papal resigna-tion of Pope Benedict XVI, who presently resides in Vatican City - now out of the public eye, living a self-imposed life dedicated to prayer and penance for the Church. President Trump sits in the White House. He is a controversial figure. There is much racial division in our day and a heightened tension as we deal with im-

migration in our Country. Violence and terrorism are also topics of the day; at this writing our Nation mourns the massacre of several wounded and dead at the hands of a Las Vegas sniper. The world now speaks of nuclear war with North Korea, and just down the road our friends in southeast Texas (Houston-Beaumont area) are recovering from a devastating Hurricane Harvey. Hurricanes Irma and Maria followed in short time and wreaked havoc in Florida and the Caribbean Islands. Last year, Lafayette suffered with major flooding due to heavy rains. Many parishioners had damage in their homes and some are only now, a year later, able to return to their homes. It seems the wrath of Mother Nature is hitting us hard these days. From a School Family perspective, we recently faced the death of another student (Last year we suffered a similar loss), who was killed in a boating accident. He was on a Jet Ski with a friend. The friend survived. I was asked to go to the hospital (Lafayette General) to tell the survivor of the tragic death. He was a trooper, though these types of “duties” are the hardest things we ever do as priests. Yet, despite our sorrow, God’s love always breaks through, for we are witnessing an outpouring of love and affection for the families involved. What a beautiful Fatima Family we have, and what a graced privilege it is to be the “Father” of this Family. Soon to celebrate my 55th birthday on October 17th, I am pres-ently in my 29th year as a priest, and my 11th year as Pastor of Fatima, having arrived in April of 2007, Easter Monday. At the time of my assignment, I had just lost my father, who died of pancreatic cancer on March 28, 2007. I buried my dad, conduct-ed Holy Week Services - all in the midst of packing to arrive here. Bishop Michael Jarrell, who assigned me, wanted a pastor immediately after the appointment of Fatima pastor, Msgr. Glenn Provost, as Bishop of Lake Charles. At his Episcopal appoint-ment, Knight Hall was then under construction, so a new pastor was needed as soon as possible to oversee this important project. Being pastor of Fatima during this Centennial Year has been one of the highlights of my priesthood. I fell in love with Our Lady of Fatima the first moment I walked into this Church when coming to Mass here as a young boy. At that time I remember seeing the beautiful stained glass window in the back of the Church. My heart was instantly captured! We’ve done several renovations and beautifications during my tenure here, particularly telling the story of Fatima in Church (visually with statues, etc.). At the time of my arrival, the build-ings were old and needed much repair. A peruse of documents will point this out to you. What is most important is the beautiful spiritual life of the people of Fatima. I’ve watched the Parish grow. There are many young families here. It’s a joy to see the youthfulness of the Parish. And equally joyful is now having an Associate Pastor at my side. Af-ter many years of running a large Parish and School alone, I real-ized I needed help. Fr. Nathan Comeaux, the Associate, arrived in April of this year. He is a good priest and I’m glad he is here. I pray that your celebration of the bi-centennial brings as much joy and grace to you as the celebration of the centennial did for me. I only ask that you offer a Mass for my soul some time dur-ing your celebrations and I pray that, one day, I will meet you, embraced with the eternal love of the Father, to praise and adore Him forever and ever. In the Heart of Mary Immaculate, I am Rev. Michael J. Russo, pastor

Monday, October 16 Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

Healed from a crippling disor-der by a vision of the Blessed Virgin, which prompted her to give her life to God. After receiving a vision of Christ fresh from the

Scourging, she was moved to join the Or-der of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial in 1671. Received a revelation from Our Lord in 1675, which included 12 promises to her and to those who practiced a true devotion to His Sacred Heart, whose crown of thorns represent his sacrifices. The devo-tion encountered violent opposition, espe-cially in Jansenist areas, but has become widespread and popular. Born: July 22, 1647 at L’Hautecourt, Bur-gundy, France Died: October 17, 1690 of natural causes Canonized: May 13, 1920 by Pope Bene-dict XV Tuesday, October 17 Saint Ignatius of Antioch

Convert from pa-ganism to Christi-anity. Succeeded Saint Peter the Apostle as Bishop of Antioch, Syria. Served during per-secution of Domi-tian. During the persecution of Tra-jan, he was ordered taken to Rome to be killed by wild animals. On the way, a journey which took months, he wrote a

series of encouraging letters to the church-es under his care. First writer to use the term the Catholic Church. Martyr. Apos-tolic Father. His name occurs in the “nobis quoque peccatoribus” in the Canon of the Mass. Legend says he was the infant that Jesus took into his arms in Mark 9. Born: c.50 in Syria

Died: thrown to wild animals c.107 at Rome, Italy Canonized: Pre-Congregation Wednesday, October 18 Luke the Evangelist Born to pagan Greek parents, and possibly a slave. One of the earliest converts to Christi-anity. Physician, studying in Antioch and Tarsus. Proba-bly travelled as a ship’s doctor; many charitable societies of physicians are named for him. Leg-end has that he was also a painter who may have done por-traits of Jesus and Mary, but none have ever been correctly or definitively attributed to him; this story, and the inspiration his Gospel has always given artists, led to his patronage of them. He met Saint Paul the Apostle at Troas, and evangelized Greece and Rome with him, being there for the shipwreck and other perils of the voyage to Rome, and stayed in Rome for Paul’s two years in prison. Wrote the Gospel according to Luke, much of which was based on the teachings and writings of Paul, interviews with early Christians, and his own experi-ences. Wrote a history of the early Church in the Acts of the Apostles. Born: at Antioch Died: c.74 in Greece. Some stories say that he was martyred, others that he died of natural causes Canonized: Pre-Congregation Thursday, October 19 Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko Born to a farm family. Ordained on May 28, 1972 in the archdio-cese of Warsaw, Po-land. Noted and vocal anti-Communist preacher during the period of Communist rule in Poland. Worked closely with the anti-Communist Solidarity union movement. When

martial law was declared in Poland to sup-press opposition, the Church continued to work against the Communists, and Father Jerzy’s sermons were broadcast on Radio Free Europe. The secret police threatened and pressured him to stop, but he ignored them. They trumped up evidence and ar-rested him in 1983, but the Church hierar-chy indicated that they would fight the charges; the false charges were dropped, Father Jerzy was released, continued his work, and was pardoned in a general am-nesty of July 22, 1984. The Communists tried several times to kill him and make it look like an accident or anonymous attack, but they quit hiding their intentions, and the secret police simply kidnapped and killed Father Jerzy. Martyr. Born: September 14, 1947 in Okopy, Pod-laskie, Poland Died: kidnapped on October 19, 1984 by the Sluzba Bezpieczenstwa (Security Ser-vice of the Ministry of Internal Affairs), the Communist Polish secret police and beaten to death Beatified: June 6, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI Friday, October 20 Saint Paul of the Cross The son of a mer-chant, Paul was a pius youth.
