INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Aware of the intense media coverage concerning the new strand of the coronavirus from China and mindful of the ever-widening extend of the Flu season here in the New York area the Bishop, out of an abundance of caution, is suspending the distribution of Holy Communion under Both Forms within the Diocese until fur-ther notice. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners,

“Remember that you are dust and to dust, you shall return.” These words can be said to a per-son while ashes are placed on the forehead. It reminds us that we are in a world of passing things. Our time is one of those things that pass. This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. We begin Lent. The Sunday after next Sunday, Day Light Savings Time begins. A week and five days after that we have the first day of spring. So by the middle of next month, we will be in Lent and in spring. The seasons of Lent and spring complement one another. The word “Lent” comes from an Old English word, “lencten” which means lengthening. It refers to the lengthening of the day. The Western Church set the celebration of Lent and Easter at a time in the year when nature began to blossom. The in-creased sunlight, growth and new life that was visible in nature helps us to think about spiritual growth in our lives.

The celebration of Lent for the faithful is meant to help us allow Jesus to lengthen his touch and reach into our lives so that he may help us to grow in the new life that he offers to us. Lent is an op-portunity to renew our faith together as individuals and church. We can support one another through our collective practice of the disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. What will we do to allow Jesus to help us to change for the better in our lives? How can we become more fervent disciples of Christ? Another phrase that may be used when ashes are distributed is, “Repent and believe in the gospel.” This is a time that we have a lot of support to turn from sin and be more receptive of the gospel of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

One way that we can enter more into the spirit of Lent in our parish is to go to a retreat. There will be a Lent retreat in English on Saturday, March 21st and one in Spanish on Saturday, March 28th. The faith sharing groups of Arise and Levantate are another help. May the Lord bless your Lenten journey and may you experience the new life of Christ that raises us up in ways that can be beyond our expectations.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO

Queridos Feligreses: "Recuerda que eres polvo y polvo, volverás." Estas palabras se pueden decir a una persona mientras se colocan cenizas en la frente. Nos recuerda que estamos en un mundo de cosas pasajeras. Nuestro tiempo es una de esas cosas que pasan. Este miércoles es Miércoles de Ceniza. Comen-zamos la Cuaresma. El domingo siguiente al próximo domingo, el día de ahorro de luz comienza. Una semana y cinco días después tenemos el primer día de primavera. Así que a mediados del mes que viene estaremos en Cuaresma y en primavera. El tiempo Cuaresma y primavera se comple-mentan. Cuaresma que significa cuarenta dias. La Iglesia occidental estableció la celebración de la Cuaresma y la Pascua en un momento en el año en que la naturaleza comenzó a florecer. El aumen-to del crecimiento de la luz solar y la nueva vida que era visible en la naturaleza nos ayuda a pensar en el crecimiento espiritual en nuestras vidas. La celebración de la Cuaresma para los fieles está destinada a ayudarnos a permitir que Jesús alargara su tacto y alcance en nuestra vida para que nos ayude a crecer en la nueva vida que nos ofrece. La Cuaresma es una oportunidad para renovar nuestra fe juntos como individuos y como iglesia. Podemos apoyarnos unos a otros a través de nuestra práctica colectiva de las disciplinas de la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. ¿Qué haremos para permitir que Jesús nos ayude a cambiar para mejor en nuestra vida? ¿Cómo podemos llegar a ser discípulos más fervientes de Cristo? Otra frase que se puede utilizar cuando se distribuyen las cenizas es: "Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio". Este es un tiempo en el que tenemos mucho apoyo para apartarnos del pecado y ser más receptivos del evangelio de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Una manera de entrar más en el espíritu de Cuaresma en nuestra parroquia es ir a un retiro. Habrá un retiro cuaresmal en inglés el sábado 21 de marzo y uno en español el sábado 28 de marzo. Los grupos de fe que comparten grupos de Arise y Levantate son otra ayuda. Que el Señor bendiga vuestro camino cuaresmal y que experimenten la nueva vida de Cristo que nos eleva de maneras que pueden estar más allá de nuestras expectativa

Fast and Abstinence

Good Friday, April 10th, is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Limit of one full meal on this day for those who are 18 years old and have not reached 60.

All Fridays of Lent those who are over 14 years of age abstain totally from meat.
