2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 8, 2019

Juan, precursor de Jesús

Juan, el hijo de Zacarías (aquel sacerdote ya anciano que quedó

mudo por no creer en la Palabra) e Isabel (mujer de avanzada

edad que llamaban estéril), es el precursor del Señor Jesús, el que

anuncia y prepara el camino del Mesías.

¿De qué manera preparó Juan el camino a Jesús? ¿Qué hizo? ¿En

qué consistía su mensaje? ¿Cómo vivió?

Juan, a diferencia de su padre enmudecido, habla, predica. Se

decía que era la voz que dama en el desierto.

Su mensaje insistente era: “Arrepiéntanse, porque el Reino de los

cielos está cerca”. Su vestimenta, su estilo de vida, era como el

de un penitente: “Usaba una túnica de pelo de camello, ceñida

con un cinturón de cuero, y se alimentaba de saltamontes y de

miel silvestre”.

Era hombre de palabras esperanzadoras: “el Reino de los cielos

está cerca”; pero también de duras palabras: “Raza de víboras,

¿quién les ha dicho que podrán escapar al castigo que les

aguarda?”

Era un hombre con los pies bien puestos en la tierra, que escruta

los signos de los tiempos y no teme anunciar la catástrofe: “Ya el

hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no dé

fruto, será cortado y arrojado al fuego”.

Gran conocedor de las personas podía desenmascarar y quitar

falsas ilusiones; así como insistir en el trabajo y las buenas obras:

“Hagan ver con obras su arrepentimiento y no se hagan ilusiones

pensando que tienen por padre a Abraham, porque yo les aseguro

que hasta de estas piedras puede Dios sacar hijos de Abraham”.

Y por supuesto, es alguien que no olvida su papel de precursor.

Reconoce lo que él es y hace, pero sabe quién es el bueno y ante

quién hay que poner la mirada esperanzadora: “Yo los bautizo

con agua en señal de que ustedes se han arrepentido; pero el que

viene después de mí, es más fuerte que yo...”

John, precursor of Jesus

John, the son of Zachariah (that old priest who was mute for not

believing in the Word) and Isabel (an elderly woman they called

barren), is the forerunner of the Lord Jesus, who announces and

prepares the way of the Messiah.

How did John prepare the way to Jesus? What did he do? What

was his message? How did he live?

Juan, unlike his muted father, speaks, preaches. It was said that it

was the voice that cried in the desert.

His insistent message was: "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven

is near." His dress, his lifestyle, was like that of a penitent: "He

wore a tunic of camel hair, fitted with a leather belt, and fed on

grasshoppers and wild honey."

He was a man of hopeful words: "the Kingdom of heaven is

near"; but also, in harsh words: "Race of vipers, who has told

them that they can escape the punishment that awaits them?"

He was a man with his feet firmly on the ground, who scrutinizes

the signs of the times and is not afraid to announce the

catastrophe: “The ax is already placed at the root of the trees, and

every tree that does not bear fruit will be cut and thrown into the

fire. "

Great connoisseur of people, he could unmask and remove false

illusions; as well as insisting on work and good deeds: " Produce

good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to

say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell

you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones."

And of course, he is someone who does not forget his role as a

precursor. He recognizes who he is, but he knows who is the one

and to whom we must look with hope: “I am baptizing you with

water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is

mightier than I.”

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO DICIEMBRE 8, 2019

SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

"The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first

moment of her conception, by a singular grace and

privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of

Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune

from all stain of original sin."

In 1854, Pope Pius IX's solemn declaration, "Ineffabilis

Deus," clarified with finality the long-held belief of the

Church that Mary was conceived free from original sin.

Mary was granted this extraordinary privilege because of

Her unique role in history as the Mother of God. That is,

she received the gift of salvation in Christ from the very

moment of her conception.

Even though Mary is unique in all humanity for being

born without sin, she is held up by the Church as a model

for all humanity in Her holiness and Her purity in her

willingness to accept the Plan of God for her.

Every person is called to recognize and respond to God’s

call to their own vocation in order to carry out God’s plan

for their life and fulfill the mission prepared for them

since before the beginning of time. Mary’s “Let it be done

to me according to Thy Word,” in response of the Angel

Gabriel’s greeting, is the response required of all

Christians to God’s Plan.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a time to

celebrate the great joy of God’s gift to humanity in Mary,

and to recognize with greater clarity, the truth that each

and every human being has been created by God to fulfill

a particular mission that he and only he can fulfill.

“The word of the Lord came to me thus: "Before I formed

you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I

dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed

you." (Jeremiah 1:5-6)

SOLEMNIDAD DE LA INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN DE LA

SANTA VIRGEN MARÍA

Cada 8 de diciembre la Iglesia celebra la Inmaculada

Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María. El dogma de fe

según el cual la Madre de Jesús fue preservada del pecado

desde el momento de su concepción. Es decir, desde el

instante en que comenzó su vida humana.

A mediados del siglo XIX, el Papa Pío IX, después de

recibir numerosos pedidos de obispos y fieles de todo el

mundo, ante más de 200 cardenales, obispos, embajadores

y miles de fieles católicos, declaró con su bula “Ineffabilis

Deus”: “Que la doctrina que sostiene que la Beatísima

Virgen María fue preservada inmune de toda mancha de la

culpa original en el primer instante de su concepción por

singular gracia y privilegio de Dios omnipotente, en

atención a los méritos de Cristo Jesús, Salvador del género

humano, está revelada por Dios y debe ser por tanto firme y

constantemente creída por todos los fieles..."

En Roma se envió una gran cantidad de palomas

mensajeras en todas las direcciones llevando la gran

noticia. Y en los 400 mil templos católicos del mundo se

celebraron grandes fiestas en honor de la Inmaculada

Concepción de la Virgen María.

Poco más de tres años después, en una de sus apariciones

en Lourdes, la Virgen María se presentó ante la humilde

pastorcita Santa Bernardita Soubirous con estas palabras:

“Yo soy la Inmaculada Concepción”.

Actualmente son miles las iglesias dedicadas a esta

advocación en todo el mundo y millones de fieles le tienen

una particular devoción. La Inmaculada Concepción es

patrona de España, es conocida como “La Purísima” en

Nicaragua, a través de la imagen de Nuestra Señora de “El

Viejo”, y venerada como la “Virgen de Caacupé” en

Paraguay.
