LOVE IS NOT JUST WHAT WE SEE IN MOVIES – IT TAKES WORK, POPE FRANCIS SAYS
Pope Francis said.“Love is not empty words or what is depicted in romantic
films – it is action and service toward others.” Love is not what they say in movies... Love is not playing violins, all romantic. No, love is work. Love shows itself in works, not in words. Sometimes people might think that love is what they see between a couple in a film, but love is actually found in always working for others. Do I remain in the love of the Lord or [do I] go out to look for other amusements and conduct of life? For example, if you speak badly of others, then you do not have love, the Pope said, inviting Catholics to pray to the Lord for help to remain in His love and to serve others well.
“Follow the example of Jesus, who gave his life as a servant”, he said. “Because the Lord always loves first, love is always first.”
This week’s Readings: Acts 1:1-11; Psalm 47:2-3, 6-9; Ephesians 1:17-23 or Ephesians 4:1-13 or 4:1-7,11-13; Mark 16:15-20
Next week’s Readings: Acts 2:1-11; Psalm 104:1ab, 24ac, 29bc-30, 31, 34; 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Galatians 5:16-25; John 20: 19-23 or John 15:26-27, 16:12-15
THE ASCENSION OF THE LORDMay 12 & 13, 2018

PAGE 2FROM the PASTOR’S DESKREVEREND PASCUAL ABAYA IV
The Evangelist Mark ends his Gospel with the Ascension of Jesus into heaven and took his
seat at the right hand of God. Not only that he presented Jesus’ departure from His disciples but also highlighted His glorification as He sits on the right hand of God. Interpreting this mystery literally may lead us to a different conclusion and misunderstanding of this event in the life of Jesus. If we think of heaven as a geographical place, we may be asking where heaven is. Is it in the sky? Is it beyond the Milky Way? Where? If it is somewhere out there, and we cannot find it, is Jesus no longer present with us? The mystery of the Ascension is more than that. This is where true faith comes in. In as much as things are unexplainable, it does not mean that it is untrue. Faith enables us to understand the deeper reality of what is there and presented in our presence. The Ascension of Jesus is one of those mysteries that reveal to us the greatness of God. And to understand in the eyes of faith, the Ascension of Jesus convey to us about God’s presence, that is, Jesus is being with the Father. In the Ascension event, it draws us to realize Jesus’ words in the Gospel of John, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” It opens up our minds that our life is moving towards the Father and our way to Him is through Jesus. And, all these have to take place to complete the journey towards our
salvation through Him. In the Ascension account, what is also noticeable is Jesus’ command to His disciples to go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. He entrusted His mission to them so that His message of salvation will be heard to all generations to come. Though afraid that things might happen to them what their master experienced, they took it by heart and went out boldly to continue Jesus’ mission. They were promised that He will be with them through the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to guide and lead them to fulfill their tasks. With all these things in mind about this Feast Day, the Lord’s Ascension invites us to realize our goal in life, that is, to be with God. And being with God is through living our lives here in earth accordingly as Jesus had taught. Pope Francis made it clear in his new apostolic exhortation that we are called to be holy. Let us also remember that an essential element in order to celebrate this great feast of Jesus meaningful, is to participate in His mission like He called His disciples to go and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. And to participate in this mission is to make Him known and be a witness of Him in word and in deed. When that day and time will come, we will be in heaven as Jesus is, and that is in the presence of God and all the saints and angels. Know that Heaven is our Goal in life!
HEAVEN IS OUR GOAL IN LIFE!
STEWARDSHIP CORNER“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”PAGE 3

MARY, OUR MOTHER: THE IDEAL STEWARD
Christian discipleship involves many elements, beginning with our response in faith to the Lord’s invitation. In Stewardship: A Disciple's Response; A Pastoral Letter on Stewardship, our Bishops remind us that stewardship is indeed part of the
disciple’s life. The Scriptures also provide us with Mary, our Blessed Mother, both as the perfect disciple and the perfect steward. In the Annunciation, the Father, through the archangel Gabriel, called Mary to say “Yes” to the overshadowing by the Holy Spirit and thus become that vessel through whom the promised Redeemer of all creation would enter our broken world. Even beyond her complete understanding of this event, she accepted this gift in trust and faith as God’s humble handmaid. Then immediately, she ventured to the hill country to visit Elizabeth to share this “good news,” responding to Elizabeth’s greeting with the Magnificat — the disciple’s plan of action. What we have and what we are — material and spiritual — are and always will be a gift and, like Mary, we should be shared with others that they may come to know and love her son and our Lord! During Jesus’ life and ministry, even to Calvary, she lived out her faith — ever mindful of that original call to stewardship — caring for the One given to her in such an extraordinary way, and ultimately giving Him to us. (excerpts from inlandcatholic.org)
“Like Mary, my mom is supportive in all that I do. No matter what happens, she’s there for me and I love her for always having my back.” - Kristen Valencia
“A quality that my mother possesses is selflessness because she does a lot for our family without asking for anything in return.” - Sharie Quibilan
“I believe that my mom is comforting like Mama Mary. She is always there for me when I’m hurting and always leads me to Christ when I’m in need.” - Nicole Tabada “Like Mama Mary my mom has so much strength. My mom being a single parent showed everyone how strong she is. She has helped me through my lowest times and she has never looked defeated. Her strength has always empowered me to do better in life.”- Nellani Tabada
“Much like Mary, one admirable quality that my mom possesses is perseverance. She has a quiet, yet strong demeanor and she truly seeks God to guide her through all the seasons of life.” - Nicole Santos

A Feast, Indeed! On Friday April 27th, the faculty and staff celebrated the Feast Day of Our Lady of Good Counsel. The actual feast day was April 26th and our celebrations began in the parking lot with families dropping off their children being given coffee and breakfast snacks by Mrs. Luarca and her team.
The formalities of Friday’s events began with a procession of our Blessed Mother towards the Church. We then continued with the celebration of Mass. Following recess, all the classes came back to the Church to have our annual Talent Show. We had some outstanding performances! Later, that evening we had our Food Truck celebration. There was a lot of food and it tasted really good. We also had some live entertainment for our guests. Our school gives a big Mahalo to all who came to celebrate this amazing day with us!
2018 Talent ShowOn April 27th, we had our annual Talent Show. Many students performed to show off their gifts. We were very lucky to see our dancers: Myra Cabuslay, Rayna Cabuslay, Mia Rodriguez, Chayden Eli, Asialyn Lee, Scarlette Colon, Alexia Mae Eleccion, the OLGC Cheerleaders and the Korean Club. Our school was also very blessed to see Mikayla Gonzales, Rayna Cabuslay, Marley Mullings, Jada Gonzales and Alexis Cantorna sing. They all have beautiful voices. A special thanks to Sakura Morita for showing off her great Karate moves and Mr. Dave for singing a silly love song for his wife. OLGC hopes you can make it to next year’s talent show!
Food Truck FestivalIn the evening, Our Lady of Good Counsel had its second Food Truck event of the school year. Nine vendors arrived in their trucks, each offering different food and drink options. Children were able to watch movies in
two of the classrooms during the event. The entertainment included acts from our talent show, which took place earlier in the day, stand up acts from the crowd, Shazzy Fitness and many more solo artists. At the Pastoral Center was a craft fair, where visitors could purchase jewelry, gift baskets, handmade goods and participate in craft activities. The school is especially grateful for the collaboration and support of the parishioners and community members. Mr. Bob Sabatini and the Lector Ministry offered to help as parking lot monitors. The American Heritage Girls helped to keep the campus free of litter throughout the evening!
The Feast Day of Our Lady of Good Counsel was a superb celebration of our patroness! Mahalo to all those who participated in any way.

In today’s Gospel we listen to Jesus, praying to his Father. He prays for the well-being of his followers. He prays that they may be protected, that they may know God’s truth, that they share in Christ’s joy. How do we exercise stewardship over the gift of prayers? What is our attitude towars prayer? Do we speak to the Lord about our personal concerns? Do we pray for others? Do we listen to the Lord? Do we believe the Lord listens to us?

BISHOP LARRY SILVA
LITURGICALCATECHESIS by Rev. Alfred Omar B. GuerreroParochial Vicar/Director of Liturgy
Whenever we talk about religion, we usually refer to the moral life, of keeping God’s commandments, which is very important. But people of no faith whatsoever can be very kind and caring people, just as
we know that people of faith can be very sinful. It is perhaps for this reason that we do not share the faith as we should, because if someone can be good without the faith, as they sometimes are, there is no real reason to evangelize. So what is it about our faith that makes it unique, that gives us the desire and the need to share it with others? It is, at heart, an expression of friendship with a person, the person of Jesus Christ. And this is not just an admiration of some hero of the past who did good deeds and taught wise things; no, this is a relationship with this person who is living today because he rose from the dead and continues to be present with us, calling us to be his intimate friends. This is a human friendship with God himself, because this person who calls us to be his friends is both human and divine.
Someone recently asked me what the church says about cremation. Here is another article by Johan Van Parys.
Dear Johan, My mom requested to be cremated. I was surprised. She is very Catholic. And though I know the Catholic Church allows cremation, I am not entirely comfortable with it. Any advice?
Gentle Reader- Though explicit legislation forbidding cremation is relatively new, it has been the ancient custom for Catholics not to be cremated. Early Christians followed the Jewish custom of burying the bodies of the deceased. Jesus himself was laid in a tomb. And even when Christianity spread through the Roman Empire, where cremation was quite common, they retained the custom of burying their dead. Cremation more or less disappeared together with the Roman Empire, except maybe at times of overwhelming death by disease such as during epidemics of the plague. Around the turn of the twentieth century cremation started to be practiced again in Europe. The Catholic Church interpreted this as a denial of the resurrection and ruled against the practice in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, even forbidding a funeral Mass for those who had been cremated. In 1963 this ban was lifted and the new Code of Canon Law of 1983 was adapted accordingly. In a 1997 appendix to the Order of Christian Funerals, the Congregation for Divine Worship approved cremation as an acceptable practice for Catholics. However, though cremation is now permitted in the Catholic Church, there are a couple conditions. One, the preference is to have the body present for the funeral and that cremation takes place following the service. Nevertheless, the rite also makes provision for the possibility of cremation before the funeral service. In this case the cremated remains should be present at the funeral liturgy. Two, the cremated remains are to be treated in the same way as the body would be treated. This means that the cremated remains should be buried properly. This precludes the scattering of remains in oceans and over mountaintops. It also precludes the keeping of cremated remains on one’s mantle or in one’s dresser. As long as you observe the above you can feel completely comfortable fulfilling your mom’s wishes. © 2015 Excerpted from What’s the Smoke For? And Other Burning Questions about the Liturgy by Johan van Parys.
