Dear Parishioners, The Parish Family and your Priests here at Our Lady of Guadalupe misses you altogether. Do you ever worry about not saying the right thing or having an answer that someone is looking for? As we begin a new school year, we know this fear is something that is probably on the minds of our children as they begin their academic semesters. This is something that I always struggled with and at times I still continue to run into these challenges. As the new school year begins, we know that the challenge of living out our faith as Catholics will happen. In a world that is in need of the gifts we are able to offer through the Church, we need to trust that God will help us to live out our faith and will guide us if we let Him.

If we look throughout the Sacred Scriptures, we see how the prophets and Apostles often struggled with this as well. Even in these moments, the Lord promises to be there for us and to help us find the words we need to say. No matter how bleak or daunting the situation may look, God always comes through. While it might not be the easiest situation, we trust that He will help us to navigate and sanctify the world around us. The Holy Spirit works miracles in our lives if we let Him and are open to Him. This is something that we always grow in, as we know how tough it is to let go of our control and to ask God for His help in our lives.

Outside of the Sacred Scriptures, we have some great examples in the saints who have done this as well. One of my favorite saints who trusted in the power of God is St. Joseph of Cupertino, whose feast day is September 18. He is also a good saint for those of us who might not be the best test takers. St. Joseph of Cupertino had a difficult life. His family and friends often thought he was good for nothing and would never accomplish anything in his life. He had studied for the seminary and barely made it to ordination because he was such a poor student.

A story that we knew well in during my time in the seminary, happened to him as he was preparing for one of his final exams. He had not studied for a big exam he was supposed to take, so the evening before his exam, he prayed that the one question he could answer would be on the test. When he went to take the test, that very question was the only one on it! He passed the test, and was able to be ordained. He would go on to be a holy priest who helped many on their own paths to God. In his weakness, God helped Him to be strong! His grace helped St. Joseph of Cupertino clear this first hurdle so that he could continue following God’s path for him.

As we think about the uncertainties of our future, we can often wonder just how to live out our Catholic faith. Trust in God, and pray for the Holy Spirit on a daily basis to be with you as you start each day. God will put you into situations that will challenge us and He will lead you to people He wants you to talk to. Have the faith in the graces He gives you, and always remember that He is with you and that you are His prophet. Do not let this fear or anxiety keep you from being the person God created you to be, and don’t let these things keep you from helping others be the people God created them to be. God Bless you and your family, Father Adam

Stewardship: Call “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel…” -EZEKIEL 33:7

Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, many of us are not generous in proportion to the gifts we have been given. How often do we give at the minimum level required? Remember, the Lord calls us to Stewardship, where we nurture and develop our gifts. He calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, especially the one that means the most to us.

Neighborly Love: We can never love our neighbor too much. —St. Francis de Sales

A Message of Love: In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken with Jesus present to us. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he “does not speak out” to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible. We live in a “do your own thing” age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Saint Peter Claver (1581-1654) - September 9: Nearly two hundred years before the Declaration of Independence proclaimed “that all men are created equal,” two hundred fifty years before the Emancipation Proclamation mandated an end to slavery, three hundred fifty years before Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” and four hundred years before the election of an American president boasting African heritage, Peter Claver left his native Spain behind to volunteer for the Jesuit missions in Colombia. There, he was horrified both by slavery as an institution and by the inhuman brutality inflicted upon the slaves. He solemnly vowed to become “the slave of the slaves,” and lived that vow heroically for close to forty years. Not knowing their language, Peter began his ministry among the slaves by using the universal language of practical charity, providing medical care and a tangible though wordless assertion of their human dignity: “We spoke to them not with words but with our hands, kneeling beside them, bathing their faces and bodies, encouraging them with friendly gestures” (see Liturgy of the Hours, Volume 4, p. 2018). Then came evangelization and baptism. Holiness as human wholeness: Peter Claver’s enduring witness. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dios te bendiga a ti y a tu familia, Padre Adam
