Adver!ser For The Weekend
November 22, 2015 • Feast Of Christ The King Sunday 3
A Note From The Pastor… This weekend we are celebra"ng the Solemnity of Our Lord
Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This is the last Sunday of the
liturgical year. This weekend’s Solemnity celebrates Jesus as
King, Who has dominion over all crea"on, though we await for
Him to fully establish His reign on earth. And so we pray for His
Kingdom to come, and His Will be done “on earth as it is in
heaven.”
Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent, and we begin a
new liturgical year. Advent is a season of prepara"on, and as
such is a peniten"al season. Hence, the color purple.
During Advent, we prepare for Christmas, when we
celebrate and remember Jesus’ first coming. But Advent is also
a "me of wai"ng: we s"ll await Jesus’ Second Coming at the end of "me. Though
similar to Lent, Advent is marked by an emphasis of joyful expecta"on and hope, for it
leads to the birth of a baby, the Savior of the World.
Each year when Advent begins, we see some changes at Mass: We have an Advent
Wreath, which is lit and blessed at the beginning of Advent. As it is a peniten"al season,
we do not sing the Gloria un"l the Christmas celebra"on [An excep#on is December 8th,
the Immaculate Concep#on, as it is a solemnity].
During Advent and Lent, it is also good prac"ce to recite the Confiteor (“I confess to
Almighty God …”) during the Peniten"al Rite. Instead of the longer Nicene Creed, we will
recite the shorter Apostles’ Creed.
As Advent is also the beginning of the liturgical year, it’s also a good "me to implement
other changes. Some have commented that the announcements at Mass are excessive—
quite right, that’s my fault. I will be formula"ng criteria to minimize the number and
length of announcements in the future.
Regarding the presenta"on of the gi*s, the bread, wine, and water will be brought up
immediately, so as to not unnecessarily prolong the Mass. We will not have a post-Holy
Communion Hymn in favor of quiet "me for prayer. Here the objec"ve is not to make the
Mass shorter, but to give "me for silent reflec"on a*er having just received the Body and
Blood of the Lord Jesus; "me for “communion” with Jesus.
Next week, I will men"on a few other changes. As we are s"ll in the month of
November, let us con"nue to pray for our beloved dead.
I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Blessings,
Fr. Paul

*************************************************************
In 1531, a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to Juan Diego, a humble
Na"ve American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico
City. She iden"fied Herself as the ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the
True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven
and earth. She made a request for a Church to be built on the site, and
Juan Diego submi#ed Her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop
hesitated, and requested a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without
delay or ques"on, sending Her na"ve messenger to the top of the hill in
mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop.
A*er complying to the request for a sign, She le* for us an image
of Herself imprinted miraculously on the na"ve’s #lma, a poor quality
cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years, but shows no
sign of decay a*er more than 475 years later. It s"ll defies all scien"fic
explana"ons of its’ origin.
Her message is of love and compassion, and a universal promise of
help and protec"on to all mankind. An incredible list of miracles, cures,
and interven"ons are a#ributed to Her. Yearly, an es"mated 10 million
visit Her Basilica, making Her Mexico City home the most popular
Marian Shrine in the world, and the most visited Catholic Church in the
world next to the Va"can.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on
December 12th. In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the
Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, during his third
visit to the sanctuary, declared the date of December the 12th as a
Liturgical Holy Day for the whole con"nent. During the same visit,
Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to Her loving protec"on,
and placed under Her motherly care the innocent lives of children,
especially those who are in danger of not being born.
“Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that nor any other
sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not
under my protec#on? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within
my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by
anything.”

others are clubs, schools, fraternal organiza"ons, and individuals and their
families. Our largest source of donors, however, are churches, and individuals
who hear of the need at church. It is there that Christ’s message is most
audibly heard, and most clearly put into ac"on. It is there that the call to us to
be servants, best translates into the building of the kingdom. Donors are
provided first name, age, gender, sizes, and a gi* preference for each member
of a sponsored family. They are then asked to shop for their designated
person(s), and return the gi*s to Catholic Chari"es for distribu"on.
The economic situa"on has found us with more folks in need than ever
before, and donors with less discre"onary income. If you would like to be
involved in this work of heart, contact Jim Wogan or Barbara Campbell,
(847) 782-4210, or at jwogan@catholicchari!es.net. Consider involving your
work group at your place of business, or others in your social circle. Also, if
you know of a group interested in a one shot volunteer opportunity, they
might want to consider working a shi* at the Distribu"on Center. In that case,
contact Melissa Abboushi at (847) 782-4126.
