RELIGIOUS EDUCATION GRADES 1-6 CLASSES RESUME ON

MONDAY NOVEMBER 26th

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old litur-gical calendar still had an uncon-scious claim on their hearts. We've already seen how on Saint Martin's Day, November 11, me-dieval continental Europe ob-served a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, danc-

es, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of "Saint Martin's Wine," the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Mar-tin's Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wil-derness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of the Martinmas connection, they might nev-er have celebrated at all!

THE OUR LADY OF LORETTO CHRISTMAS OUTREACH 2018 IS UNDER-

WAY! During Advent, our Church family shares many tra-ditions that help us to welcome Jesus into our hearts at Christmas. One of these traditions is the Christ-mas Outreach. Again this year we have committed to help families in need celebrate the birth of Christ as we all do, with good food, gifts, and the comfort of knowing there are people that care about us. It’s easy to be part of this compassionate outreach. Our Giving Trees are up in all the entrances to the Church. Please take an envelope from one of the Giving trees and return it to the secure mail slot at the Rectory, along with your gift of store gift cards, cash or check payable to Our Lady of Loretto Christmas Outreach. Please indicate the amount of your donation clearly on the outside of the gift card.

Our deadline for donations is Monday December 10, 2018

For your convenience, volunteers will be at the church entrances after each mass this weekend to accept your donations. Thank you for helping us to share the true spirit of Christmas with those in need.

Dear Friends, I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving. I certainly did!. There’s nothing better than to gather around a table full of turkey and fixings with family and friends. I wish Thanksgiving could be every-day!

While we have much to be Thankful for, let’s also remember those affected by the California wildfires. May they know Christ’s healing love during these ter-rible times. Have a great week, Father Brian

A PRAYER FOR FIRE VICTIMS

Almighty God, who alone created the beauty and the bounty of our land, who cares and loves everyone—from the workers in the field to the owners of the field—be with your people in Cal-ifornia now in the midst of the fires. Bring an end to the loss of lives and the loss of homes. Bring aid to the firefighters who, by serving others, serve you. Give

them courage and strength to persevere, to find the ability in their bodies and souls to keep working for another day or hour or minute. Ease the winds that spread the flames and disperse the smoke that covers the sky.

Bring hope to the displaced and the homeless. Keep alive inside their minds and hearts memo-ries, the physical traces of which may be lost. Remind us that you are the promise of a new to-morrow.

Bring rest and peace to those who have been lost, and let their souls find eternal life with you. Be a comfort and relief to the grieving. As the cities are rebuilt, may no one be left behind. May all be remembered as you remember all. As you led the Hebrew people through the desert, lead your people now, God. From immi-grants who face unique obstacles to farmworkers who continue to labor in the fields despite dangerous smoke to families who have lost loved ones to those who have lost everything they have built over a lifetime, may all be included and cared for as we rebuild, guided by your Spir-it. May our hearts never turn away from you or from each other in our time of need. May we see you in the faces of those in need. May we see your work in the hands of all those who reach out to help and in the green—the life!—that will soon return, by your hand, to our land.

RCIA/Adult Education

Our Lady of Loretto RCIA Program meets at 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday, upstairs in the Con-vent. The topic on November 28 is: The Order of the Mass. All adults are invited to participate.

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It's easy to understand today's scriptures as events that hap-pened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus' words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he "has made us into a king-dom" (Revelation 1:6)--one people united in love and peace for all eternity.
