Page 2 From The Pastor’s Desk… Better Known As Heidi Howls! Today we celebrate the foundational Catho-lic truth that Christ is present, really present, in the Eucharist. In the past, and even today, much theological time and effort is spent on trying to understand how Christ is present in the bread and wine. I think it is more im-portant to ask the question why Christ is pre-sent. This wondrous gift of the Eucharist al-lows Christ to be present for our benefit – pre-sent to help us live. How does the Eucharist help us live? We proclaim it in the mystery of

faith….”Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Christ has died. We remember in this meal the tremendous love by which Christ gave his life for our salvation. Dying is about letting go. As we en-counter in the Eucharist the Christ who died for us, he imparts to us the power of letting go of those aspects of our life that hold us back. What are the things that hold us back? Each of us must answer that question from the cir-cumstances of our lives. Perhaps we must let go of resentment or hurt or self-indulgence or addiction or prejudice or pride. Each time we come to this meal we set those obstacles before the Lord, and the Christ who gave his life for us enables us to let go of whatever hinders us. Christ is risen. Here is the center of our faith. We believe that the love and goodness of God was so real in the person of Christ that God conquered event death. As we encounter the risen Christ in the Eucharist he gives us the pow-er to see the goodness that is a part of our life and our world. How easy it is for us to center on what is wrong, what is broken, what has failed. In doing so we discount all the goodness and blessing that surround us in our lives. What could be a greater waste than to be a blessed and loved person and nev-er claim and celebrate that gift? So each time we come to this meal and en-counter the risen Christ we receive the strength to be thankful for the people who love us, for our health, for our talents, for the beauty of the world around us. We pray for the risen Christ to make us always conscience of those gifts and never take any of them for granted! Christ will come again. Although Christ is risen, the victory of Christ is not yet complete. Evil, injustice, violence, and hatred remain as a part of our world. They touch our lives. But we as a community believe Christ will come again, and when he comes the ultimate victory will be won and all evil will be destroyed. So each time we encounter the Christ who will come again in the Eucharist he gives us the strength to hold on, to hold on in hope. This strength allows us to believe that whatever troubles we must face God has not forgotten us and will not abandon us. In this Eucharist meal we pray that Christ will allow us to hold onto hope, even in the midst of family troubles, in the midst of sickness, in the midst of discouragement and failure, and yes even in the shadow of death. The good news of the Eucharist is not only that Christ is present, really pre-sent, but that Christ is present for our benefit, present so that we might live! Have a Blessed Week!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year, Father’s Day is celebrated on June 17. There will be a special collection taken at Masses on June 16-17 to care for our infirmed and senior priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several senior priests in the Diocese of Joliet. Prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ’s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sac-raments. On behalf of all the active and senior priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your gen-erous support of the Father’s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

Pastoral Care Page 7

Caring for the Mind, Body and Spirit Positive Lifestyle Changes Make a Difference In the bulletin article last weekend, the focus was on the importance of knowing what your blood pressure is and how it affects your health. This article stresses how to fight back against high blood pressure, referred to as the “silent killer” which may be symptomless and quietly damages blood vessels leading to serious health threats. Heart disease is still the number one killer in the U.S. and around the world but earlier and better treatment of high blood pressure has helped to decrease death rates significantly. It has been proven that taking medications as prescribed and making positive lifestyle changes can help enhance quality of life and reduce risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and more. The American Heart Association recom-mends that the following changes matter in lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease: Limit alco-hol. Enjoy regular physical activity. Manage stress. Quit smoking. Take medications properly. Work together with your physician. The Mayo Clinic also recommends weight loss as being overweight can also cause disrupted breathing while asleep (sleep apnea) which further raises blood pressure. A guide to regular physical activity is to be active at least thirty minutes most days of the week. An eating plan to learn about and follow to help with lowering blood pressure is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. For information about the DASH eating plan check out the website for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The DASH diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds and nuts. This heart-healthy way of eating is lower in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol and rich in nutrients that are associated with lowering blood pressure – mainly potassium, magnesium, calcium, protein and fiber. Reducing sodium intake does help to improve heart health and reduce blood pressure. The American Heart Association guideline for the daily intake of sodium is 2,300 milligrams or less; but the ideal amount for most adults would be 1,500 milligrams or less a day. These are guidelines to health. It is recommended to consult with your healthcare provider who knows your overall medical condition and will know if these guidelines would be safe to follow or if other guidelines would be recommended.

Your participation in the CMAA is important. If you have not had a chance to participate in the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this year, there is still time. A mailing will be arriving in homes shortly. As your pastor, I encourage you to prayerfully reflect on God’s gifts to you and to give a gift to the CMAA. Partici-pation is the key to a successful appeal and a chance for our parish to receive a parish rebate, too. Every gift helps! If you do not receive this mailing and would like to make a gift to the CMAA, please call the Diocese of Joliet Develop-ment Office at 815-838-8515. Or, if you wish to make your gift online, please visit www.jolietdioceseappeal.org.
