Third Sunday of Advent. Year A. Gaudete Sunday. Readings: Isaiah 35:1-6, 10; James 5:7-10; Mathew. 11:2-11.

Signs of hope, joy, new life and fulfillment of promise characterize the message of this Sun-day. Last Sunday the readings focused on a peaceful kingdom in the future, when the wolf and the lamb would lie down beside each other. This Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday, Rejoice Sunday. We are invited to pause and rejoice. We are told that salvation is near; the Messiah is in our midst. The Sunday takes its name from the opening words of the Entrance Antiphon of this Sunday taken from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians which begins with Gaudete in Domino semper (“Rejoice in the Lord always”). That is why today we light a desert rose candle symbolizing joy, because our salvation is already here in our midst. In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah announces to the people in exile that the Messiah will come; their situation is about to change; they will soon be free to go back home. Isaiah shows the people a poetic picture of how the desert will become fertile, and all the foliage will sing out the goodness and glory of God. Then in the final section, the reading recounts how the change will affect those who long for salvation; those who look for real joy and happiness. There would be nothing as joyful as a blind person seeing, nothing as beautiful as a deaf per-son hearing; nothing as uplifting as a lame person walking and a mute speaking. The reading therefore invites us to rejoice because the promised Messiah is coming soon to make that vi-sion a reality; to bring real joy and happiness into our lives. In the Second reading from the Letter of James, we hear the same message: “Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” The Gospel starts with John the Baptist in prison. John sends his disciples to ask Jesus whether he is really the Messiah, or would there be another to come. Jesus refers to what Isaiah had prophesied in today’s First Reading, and says that there is no need to keep waiting for sal-vation. It is already in our midst. There are already clear signs of joy, hope and new life. Jesus tells the messengers: "Go back, and tell John what you hear, and see; the blind see again, the lame walk, and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor". That is why we need not wait. That is why we need to rejoice and be happy. The deeper question we need to ask on this Sunday is what constitutes real joy and happiness in our lives? In other words, material possessions, no matter how cool, never give lasting satisfaction and joy. That is why St. Augustine once said: Our heart is restless until it rests in God. This Sunday, the readings help to see what Christ is already accomplishing in our midst, through the Church, and through our own witness that makes the blind see, the deaf hear and the lame walk. Miracles do happen in our parish: just open your eyes and ears. So this is is the message we can take from this Sunday readings: 1- The readings proclaim joy, because our salvation is closer than when we began this season. The air of Christmas is all around us; 2- The readings draw our attention to the Messiah, who is already in our midst. There are many signs of hope: the saving action of Christ is present in our parish; 3- The read-ings lead us to rejoice as we encounter the hidden “miracles” of today. Yes, “the blind see, the lame walk, and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor.” 4- Let us pray that the Lord may open our eyes and ears of faith to see, and hear what Jesus is already doing in our midst; that we may go, and tell others what we have seen, and heard. Tercer Domingo de Adviento. Año A. Domingo de Gaudete. Lecturas: Isaías 35: 1-6, 10; Santiago 5: 7-10; Mateo 11: 2-11.

Señales de esperanza, alegría, nueva vida y cumplimiento de la promesa caracterizan el mensaje de este Domingo. El Domingo pasado, las lecturas se centraron en un reino pacífico en el futuro, cuando el lobo y el cordero se acostaran uno al lado del otro. Este tercer Domingo de Adviento se llama Domingo de Gaudete, Domingo de alegría, de gozo. Estamos invitados a hacer una pausa y alegrarnos. Se nos dice que la salvación está cerca; El Mesías está en medio de nosotros. El Do-mingo toma su nombre de las palabras iniciales de la Antífona de entrada de este Domingo tomada de la Carta de Pablo a los Filipenses que comienza con Gaudete in Domino semper ("Regocíjate siempre en el Señor"). Es por eso que hoy encendemos una vela de color rosa que simboliza la alegría, el gozo porque nuestra salvación ya está aquí en medio de nosotros. En la primera lectura, el profeta Isaías anuncia a la gente en el exilio que vendrá el Mesías; su situación está a punto de cambiar; pronto serán libres para regresar a casa. Isaías le muestra a la gente una imagen poética de cómo el desierto se volverá fértil, y todo el follaje cantará la bondad y la gloria de Dios. Luego, en la sección final, la lectura relata cómo el cambio afectará a aquellos que anhelan la salvación; aquellos que buscan verdadera alegría y felicidad. No habría nada tan alegre como una persona ciega viendo, nada tan hermoso como una persona sorda oyendo; nada tan alentador como una persona coja caminando y un mudo hablando. Por lo tanto, la lectura nos invita a alegrarnos porque el Mesías prometido vendrá pronto para hacer realidad esa visión; para traer verdadera alegría y felicidad a nuestras vidas. En la segunda lectura de la Carta de Santiago, escuchamos el mismo mensaje: "Haz que tu corazón esté firme, porque la venida del Señor está cerca". El Evangelio comienza con Juan el Bautista en prisión. Juan envía a sus discípulos para pregun-tarle a Jesús si él es realmente el Mesías, o si habría otro por venir. Jesús se refiere a lo que Isaías había profetizado en la primera lectura de hoy, y dice que no hay necesidad de seguir esperando la salvación. Ya está en nuestro medio. Ya hay signos claros de alegría, esperanza y nueva vida. Jesús les dice a los mensajeros: "Regresa y dile a Juan lo que oyes, y ves; los ciegos ven de nuevo, los cojos caminan, y las Buenas Nuevas se proclaman a los pobres". Por eso no necesitamos esperar. Por eso debemos alegrarnos y ser felices. La pregunta más profunda que debemos hacer este Do-mingo es ¿qué constituye la verdadera alegría y felicidad en nuestras vidas? En otras palabras, las posesiones materiales, por geniales que sean, nunca brindan satisfacción y alegría duraderas. Es por eso que San Agustín dijo una vez: Nuestro corazón está inquieto hasta que descanse en Dios. Este Domingo, las lecturas ayudan a ver lo que Cristo ya está logrando en medio de nosotros, a través de la Iglesia y a través de nuestro propio testimonio que hace que los ciegos vean, los sordos oigan y los cojos anden. Los milagros suceden en nuestra parroquia: solo abre los ojos y los oídos. Entonces este es el mensaje que podemos tomar de las lecturas de este Domingo: 1- Las lecturas proclaman alegría, porque nuestra salvación está más cerca que cuando comenzamos esta tempora-da. El aire de la Navidad nos rodea; 2- Las lecturas llaman nuestra atención sobre el Mesías, que ya está en medio de nosotros. Hay muchos signos de esperanza: la acción salvífica de Cristo está presente en nuestra parroquia; 3- Las lecturas nos llevan a alegrarnos al encontrarnos con los "milagros" ocultos de hoy. Sí, "los ciegos ven, los cojos caminan y las Buenas Nuevas se proclaman a los pobres". 4- Oremos para que el Señor pueda abrir nuestros ojos y oídos de fe para ver y escuchar lo que Jesús ya está haciendo en nuestro medio; para que podamos ir y contarles a otros lo que hemos visto y oído. Que Dios te bendiga. Amén.
