It is ironic, considering the fact that our Lord Jesus, his earthly family, and his twelve Apostles were all faithful, practicing Jews, that the relationship between Christians and Jews in the 2,000 years since Jesus’ death, has not always been one of mutual support and regard. For many centuries, Jews were seen by Christians as ‘infidels’, the ones who had refused to accept Christ the Messiah, and who were therefore deserving of condemnation and scorn. Fortunately, this relationship has improved somewhat, particularly since World War II when we witnessed the genocide of over 6 million of our Jewish brothers and sisters. This Thursday, August 9, will mark the 20th anniversary of the canonization of a saint who has been of particular interest in this regard. St. Teresa Benedicta was born in Germany in 1891 with the name Edith Stein. Her parents were very devout Jews, but as Edith grew up she rejected God completely as did many Jews of her generation. Edith Stein went to the university and then became a professor of philosophy. Most of her colleagues were committed atheists as was Edith Stein, although she did have some Christian friends as well. On one occasion when they were discussing religion, a friend suggested she read the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila. When Edith closed the book, she said to herself, “This is the Truth.” She began to attend Mass regularly and to believe strongly in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. On January 1, 1922 she was received into the Catholic Church through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. A few years later, she took the further step of entering the Carmelite Order as a professed nun -- much to the distress of her Jewish mother and her atheist friends. All of this occurred just as Hitler and the Nazis were coming into power in Germany. As we know, many Catholics, political dissidents, gypsies and others were persecuted by the Nazis, but the full force of Hitler’s evil was directed against the Jewish population. Her life in danger, Edith Stein – now called Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross – moved to a Carmelite convent in Holland. When the Dutch bishops protested against the deportation of Jews, Hitler ordered that all Jews in Holland be rounded up. Edith was arrested by the Gestapo, put on a train with other Jews, and taken to a concentration camp. Here she found women so traumatized by the terrible experience of deportation that they were unable to even take care of their children. Sister Teresa Benedicta immediately began to minister to the children and to their stricken mothers. Finally, along with others, Sister Teresa Benedicta fell victim to Nazi extermination. She was gassed in Auschwitz on August 9, in the year 1942. Survivors reported her saintly and heroic actions in the camp. Her life exemplifies the grace that God gives us, even in the darkest moments of human history, and her death proves that to give oneself for others as Christ did is the sure road to heaven.
