Our Lady of Mount Carmel

July, 2014

Dear Friends of Carmel,

It is comforting to realize that Mary, whom we honor under the title of “Our Lady of Mount Carmel,” is the same favored one, chosen to be the Mother of Jesus. The scriptures record great events in Mary’s life that inspire and challenge us in our devotion to her and invite us to a willing response toward our own call to discipleship.

The Visitation

Soon after the message to Mary of God’s awesome favor to her, the Angel announced to Mary that her elder cousin Elizabeth was also with child. Mary showed great compassion in making the arduous journey across the hill country to visit Elizabeth. Mary stayed many days helping her cousin in her time of need.

Let us pray: Mary, we ask for the grace of compassion as we assist others in their time of need.

The Wedding Feast at Cana

In the joyful excitement at the wedding feast, Mary received word that the wine was getting low. Mary went to Jesus with that message and she said to the waiters, “Do whatever he tells you.” “Fill the jars with water,” Je-sus told the waiters, and the first miracle of Jesus’ public life was proclaimed at the request of his Mother. And the last jars of wine were even more tasty than the first.

Let us pray: Mary, through the intercession of your Son, Jesus Christ, may we be able to face every dilemma of our lives and may we be given the grace to help calm the fear of others when they face the troubled times of their lives.

Mary at the Cross of Jesus

How painful it must have been for Mary to experience the horrible suffering of Jesus as he is nailed to the cross. From the cross Jesus looked down toward his Mother and said to her, “Behold your Son.” Then he gazed at the beloved disciple-who represents all sons and daughters-and said to him, “Behold your Mother.”

Let us pray: Jesus, you gave us the most precious of all gifts, your Mother, to be our intercessor for all times and in all circumstances. May we be your loving sons and daughters and faithful disciples of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

As we approach the Feast of Carmelites on July 16 let us feel the comfort of knowing that Mary whom we honor under the title of “Our Lady of Mount Carmel” is the same favored one chosen to be the Mother of Jesus and is our Mother as well. May we be faithful disciples of so rich a heritage.

Gratefully in Carmel,

Sister Catherine Martin, O. Carm.Development Director

Congregation of Our Lady of Mount CarmelPlease remember the following in your prayers, works and Masses

of the Sisters of Mount Carmel.

A Message from Sister Lawrence Habetz, O. Carm., Congregation President

We are so grateful for your continued support of the Sisters and of our ministries. This past year we have been able to assist the Philippines after the super typhoon and we are building our Timor-Leste fund in order to be able to continue to support our new mission. The Sisters are now teaching English and Catechsim, as-sisting with healthcare, and beginning economic development with women through tais mak-ing. We have received two grants, and with your contributions they are making great strides. Four young women have been accepted into our postulancy. Please pray for their perserver-ence for they are our future.

A special thank you to Sister Catherine Martin for serving as Development Director this past year. As Sister Catherine returns to her full-time art ministry, Sister Maria Sheila Un-dang, my assistant, will take over the role of Development Director. As a Filipino sister she has experienced the missions from childhood and has so much to share with us.

A note from Sr. Catherine Martin: I have enjoyed serving as Development Director this past year. It has been a priviledge communicating with you. You have been an inspiration to me by your love and outstanding generosity. Thank you. In Carmel, Sister Catherine
