From the Desk of Father David There is really nothing in our experience that we can use to help us to understand the event that we celebrate this weekend, the Ascension of Jesus. Even the name, Ascension, is somewhat misleading. For while we talk about heaven as being something “up there,” we know that heaven is not a “place” in the sense that we use the term. Heaven is a dimen-sionless state of being, totally divorced from our conceptions of time and space. We must, however, rely on familiar im-agery to express subtle realities that the human mind cannot comprehend. Nor can the Ascension be understood in isolation, divorced from the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, or separated from the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pente-cost. Passion, death, descent into hell, ascension into heaven, descent of the Holy Spirit – they are all parts of a single dy-namic unfolding of the divine mystery of our salvation in his-tory. An eternal, timeless process that we mortals can only experience in time and space. A transformative series of events that, much like the Transfiguration, tell us something about ourselves and about our eternal destiny. Within this seamless process, the Ascension stands at a critical juncture wherein a moment in time becomes an eter-nity. Within this moment, Christ transforms His followers into instruments of the divine. The confines and limitations of human potentiality are swept away. For the Ascension is all about the human nature of Jesus entering into eterni-ty. And if He can do it, so can we. That is the lesson of the Transfiguration. And that is the lesson of the Ascen-sion. Where Christ has gone, we, too, hope to follow. It is as much about us as it is about Jesus. Life becomes end-less. Creation, hitherto confined to a universe defined only in terms of time and space, now finds a new home, beyond the limits of mortality, in the dimensionless existence of eternity that we call heaven. In His being lifted up, as it were, Jesus does not aban-don us. He does not desert us. He does not leave us or-phans. Jesus has promised to be with us until the end of time, and He is true to His word. He remains with us wherever two or more are gathered in His Name. And He is with us in the words of Scripture. And He is with us most especially in the breaking of the bread; in the Eucharist, which is the source and summit of our Christian life. Finally, the Spirit He sends completes Jesus’ work on earth and enables us to more close-ly partake of the divinity which Jesus promises to His faithful disciples. In His glorified body, Jesus no longer belongs to the universe. By departing from us He is now in a position to welcome us in fulfillment of His promises beyond this uni-verse and into an eternity that we will share with the di-vine. The life that we have in Christ on earth, through the gift of the Holy Spirit that Jesus sends, has its ultimate fulfillment in heaven.

By His Ascension, by His being taken up into heav-en, Jesus has changed how we are to live in time. Christ has sanctified time. Made it holy. Made it livable. The doorway to eternity is now opened for us to share with Him. Old things are passing away. The transformation of all creation into a new heaven and a new earth now begins. Time itself takes on new meaning, because it is no longer a limita-tion. Everything is made new. We are reassured that with God there is always a future. The gift of life, once given, is never revoked, not even by the unstoppable passage of time. By His Ascension, Jesus has changed forever how we live in time. He has sanctified it and made it holy, because He has given it purpose. The flow of time now has a definite direction. The good we do now, and the suffering which we endure now, now have a definite meaning in eternity. Life is no longer a succession of moments in time that don’t add up to anything. Jesus gives us a reason for living that goes far beyond mere human pleasure or accomplishment. He gives us genuine joy and genuine hope. For, by living a virtuous life, we, too, can have genuine hope that where Jesus has gone we, too, might follow.

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord The bishops of New Jersey have transferred the observa-tion of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord from Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, May 24 (replacing the Seventh Sunday of Easter). Please note the transfer is for this year only, and was made to ease the burden on those who are required for live-streaming Masses in light of the dispensation already provided in all five diocese of New Jersey from the obli-gation of the faithful to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.

Prayer for the Ascension Lord Jesus, right before your Ascension into heav-en, you told your Apostles that, upon receiving the Holy Spirit, they were to be your witnesses to the

very ends of the earth. Grant, I pray, that I may be similarly inspired to spread your Gospel message in word and in deed, accordingly to your will for

me. May I do so prudently and joyfully, with your help, guidance, and grace, adhering always to the Truth as taught by your Church. Calling to mind your glorious Ascension, help me to seek what is

above, Heaven, where you are seated at the right hand of God the Father.

You who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion (to be prayed when one cannot receive the Eucharist)

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.
