From the Desk of Father David Legend has it that the great bishop and doctor of the Church, St. Augustine was walking along the

southern shores of the Mediterranean. He was in the middle of writing his masterful work on the Holy Trinity, called, appropriately, De Trinitate. Augustine was contemplating just how to capture the essence of the mys-tery of the Holy Trinity: one God in three divine persons; unity and trinity. While walking, Augustine came across a young boy pouring water from the sea with a seashell into a hole that he had dug in the sand. The saint asked the young boy what he was up to. The boy looked up and smiled. He told Augustine that he was going to pour the whole sea into the hole. Augustine chuckled, and said to the boy: “My son, don’t you know that it is impossible to pour the whole sea into that hole.” The boy chuckled himself, and responded with a big grin on his face: “It is no more impossible for me to pour the sea into this hole than it is for you to ever fully comprehend the mystery of the Trinity.” Augustine diverted his glance but for a moment, and when he looked up, the boy had vanished. Some claim that the boy was an angel; others claim that he was the Christ child himself. Whichever, his advice to Augustine was spot on. The mystery of the Holy Trinity, unity in trinity, is beyond our comprehension. That does not mean that it is not true. In fact, the more we learn from science, the more we come to realize that there exist mysteries in the physical world that we also do not fully compre-hend and yet we can still work with. For instance, how can light be both a particle and wave at the same time.

The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is the single most important dogma of the Catholic faith. It is, at the same time, perhaps the most incomprehensible. The early Church struggled for centuries with the data con-tained in Scripture how best to define this mystery. Over time the Trinity was defined more by what it is not, than what it is. In the final analysis, the Trinity cannot be comprehended by human reason, but only through the eyes of faith: faith – the realization of what is hoped for, and evidence of things not seen.

The Athanasian Creed dating from the Sixth Century states what we believe, though some may find its

description more mindboggling, than helpful. It states that: “We worship one God in Trinity; and Trinity in Unity. Neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Essence. . . . The Father is made of none; neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone; not made nor created; but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten; but proceeding.”

Why is the doctrine of the Trinity important? It is important because it helps us to understand St. John’s radi-cal claim made in the prologue to his Gospel. The claim that God is love. Love is not just an attribute of God. Love is not merely something that God does. Love is what God is. It is the very essence of God. God is love. Theologians tell us that if love is what God is, then the very being of God must embrace the lover, the beloved, and the love shared between the lover and the beloved. And that is precisely what we have in the Trinity. As St. Bernard of Clairvaux put it: “If, as properly understood, the Father is He who kisses and the Son He who is kissed, then it cannot be wrong to see in the kiss [itself] the Holy Spirit.”

Bishop Robert Barron likens the Trinitarian mystery to the use of incense at Mass: it clouds the altar

and waters the eyes, so that we can no longer see clearly. And so the mystery of the Trinity is meant to con-found us so that we may not see the Godhead clearly, but, rather, through clouds and with watering eyes. The mystery is meant to confound us so that we are prevented from being in control. Those in heaven spend an eternity reaching yet evermore increasingly profound understandings of God. Just as scientists will never cease to explore the vastness of the universe or the microcosm of the atom, so the saints will never cease ex-ploring the mystery of God. And so we come full circle, back to St. Augustine. Augustine must have learned his lesson from the young boy on the shore. God is always greater than what we can ever understand or hope to understand. As Augus-tine reflected: “Si comprehendes, non est Deus.” If you understand it, it is not God.
