“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of
God.” (Colossians 1:25) We are all called to evangelize – to continuously grow in our relationship with Jesus and to share it with others. We
may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our faith with those closest
to us, like our family, friends and neighbors. Pray for the courage to share your faith the next
time the opportunity arises.

From the Desk of Father David
On December 12, 2019, the Diocese of Metuchen will formally consecrate itself to Our Lady of Gua-dalupe. In preparation for that historic day, OLMV is inviting all parishioners (families, couples, and individuals) to take home for one week a Travelling Prayer Kit dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Along with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, you will receive a standing crucifix, a votive can-dle, holy water, rosary beads, and instructions . . . everything you need to create a sacred space in your home dedicated to Our Lady.
Five Prayer Kits are available . . . one for each weekend Mass. To learn more and to sign up for your week, register now at www.olmv.net/olg. You may also sign up in the binder located by the prayer kit at the front entrance of the church. Simply look for an available date and time and the Evange-lism Team will coordinate.” For more information, contact Deacon Tom ([email protected]).
You’ve probably heard me mention several times in homilies that Catholicism is a religion of “both/and”, rather than “either/or.” As Bishop Robert Barron has observed, “Catholicism consistently celebrates the coming together of contraries, not in the manner of a bland compromise, but rather in such a way that the full energy of the opposing elements remains in place.” It is not something that is mediocre, neither here nor there. It is not a hybrid religion that loses the opposing qualities in favor of something different but unremark-able. It is, rather, a religion that enthusiastically embraces both opposing qualities, balancing without compro-mising.
And so, for instance, it is important that we embrace both faith and good works; that we are called to both believe and to follow. We see the need for both faith and reason; Scripture and Tradition; each quality complementing the other. Catholic anthropology recognizes an individual as both body and soul.
Ultimately the source for this Catholic approach of “both/and’ is found in the Incarnation of Christ. A
God who is both mysteriously, but yet no less really, both God and man. Not an elf; not a demi-god; and cer-tainly not a centaur, but One who is True God and True Man; both Son of God and Son of Man. A God who has humbled Himself to share in our humanity, so that we might come to share in His divinity — a gift of His very Self, that is totally unmerited by us, but which nonetheless must be willingly and voluntarily embraced by us.
Catholicism is called to boldly proclaim the Truth that has been entrusted to it by Christ, its founder,
without ever pandering to an audience. Always seeking the immutable Truth, which can develop and be re-fined but which can never change or contradict itself. Catholicism is not a religion for the lukewarm or the indifferent. It is a religion that Bishop Barron refers to in terms of “vibrant paradox,” not compromise. Christ calls on us to be the salt of the earth, and a lamp placed on a stand, not under a basket. This is the great strength of Catholicism. Unfortunately, this understanding of Catholicism is in danger of being lost in a cul-ture that has itself become increasingly polarized and partisan.
One important place we see this both/and characteristic played out is in the Church’s moral theology.
The Church combines both mercy and justice, for without both we have neither true mercy nor true justice. It’s not a question of being merciful or just, or of either contradicting the other. Our decisions need to be both merciful and just; combining mercy and justice in a way in which both are respected, while at the same time neither is compromised. For while the Church places great moral demands on its members, she also provides great generosity in her forgiveness. Where sin abounds, grace abounds the more.
One of the beauties of Catholicism is that in Catholicism, we can have what St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the
Little Flower sought, we can have it all.

BACK TO SCHOOL COLLECTION
August 10-11, 2019
We realize it's still summer, but school sup-plies need to be purchased early to get the best prices and give the organizations time to distribute the items to needy families in a number of charities. These charities include the Catholic Charities of Perth Amboy, the Ozaman Family Shelter and a number of oth-er charities that help families work towards the day when they will have their own place to live. Items needed are the usual things children need going back to school, such as pencils, pens, binders, backpacks and other items you will see on sale in the stores. Please contribute to this project if you can.

Are you an adult thinking more deeply about God?
About faith? About things that last?
Are you an adult thinking about deepening your relationship with
Jesus by joining the Catholic Church?
Are you an adult who
has been baptized but has not celebrated First Communion?
or been Confirmed?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, please email Deacon Tom Sommero at
[email protected] for more information. What does RCIA mean? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the title of the process designed to prepare adults for entrance into the Catholic Church by the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Through this process, the Church helps seekers in their search for a deeper awareness, knowledge, and experience of God and what it means to be a Catholic in today’s world.
