The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light;

Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom A light has shone. (Isaiah 9:11)

On the feast of Christmas our parish community will gather to remember the light shining in the darkness prophesied by the great prophet Isaiah — the Light who has been given to us and is ours always, the Light named Emmanuel, God-with-us. We will come together to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I hope that you will join family, friends and fel-low parishioners in celebrating this joyful gift at one of our liturgies on Christmas Eve or Day. In word and song we will rejoice in the birth of a babe in Bethlehem long ago and a Savior that is ours today. We will hear of a new hope given to a world living in darkness and em-brace that hope as our encouragement in our own day. We will look back to promises of salvation realized and forward to a vision of the Kingdom of God to come. And we will leave our celebrations with a peace and joy that the world cannot give and the mission to share that peace and joy with all in the name of Christ. Let us gather to hear the words, sing the songs and say the prayers that remind us of the journey in life in which we have been joined by the Son of God who was born among us and is with us always as we carry His Light to one another. The peace of Christ be yours, Fr. Rick

The en re staff, here at Our Lady of Peace,

wish you all a Blessed Christmas

and a New Year filled with the peace of the Christ Child.

“It is Christmas every time you let God love others through you.”

RESPECT LIFE THERE’S HEALING... PROJECT RACHEL— is a confidential healing ministry for the many people, both men and women, who have been touched by an abortion experience. The purpose of Project Rachel is post-abortion reconciliation and healing for the “other victims” of abortion. The woman who has had an abortion, the person who at one time or another provided an abortion, the man who has forced a daughter or spouse to have an abortion, the potential grandparents, siblings and all who have been denied. All of these people need the help of the Church to deal with the grief, anger and sense of responsibil-ity for a great loss. Call the RVC Diocesan Offices at 678-5800 and ask to speak to someone involved in Project Rachel. THERE’S A SAFE PLACE... BABY SAFE HAVEN — A Secret Safe Place For New-borns Don’t abandon your newborn baby. You can protect your secret and get help. It is legal to give your unharmed baby to a responsible person at a Safe Haven (for example, a hospital emergency room) within the first 5 days after birth. Our mission is to rescue newborn babies from injury or death by providing CONFIDENTIAL emergency care and shelter. Total secrecy is guaranteed. Just call: 1-877-796-4673 (877-796-HOPE).

AA MEETING MONDAY NIGHTS—7:00PM

VFW POST 3350 164 MAIN STREET,

EAST ROCKAWAY, NY

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Mt 1:18-24 As our Advent preparations draw to a close and Christmas fast approaches, it is fitting that today’s read-ings demonstrate the intensity of the Father’s perfect and passionate love for each of us, culminating in the gift of His own Son, Jesus Christ, on Christmas Day. In re-sponse to such an overwhelming gift, what can we do except offer our lives as gift in return, embracing a stew-ardship way of life with all the love and strength we have to give? In our Gospel passage from Matthew, we find an unparalleled example of one who embraced this way of life in St. Joseph, as he obeys God’s call to him through the message of an angel. We never hear St. Joseph speak, but the Scriptures tell us he was always listening, attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit for his family. It was Joseph who found the stable where the baby Jesus would be born. No doubt to give birth. Joseph protect-ed the family, guarded them, tended to their safety, their comfort, and their well-being at the expense of his own plans and preferences. Though we do not hear any words from St. Joseph his actions clearly show that he offered himself, his whole life, as a gift to his family through his strong guidance, protection and service. Let us imitate St. Joseph then as good stewards, giving your very lives to those around us in love and gratitude to God who has given us everything we have, especially His own Son, Jesus Christ. MEMORIAL WORSHIP FUND A donation made to the Memorial Worship Fund of Our Lady of Peace Church is a beautiful and greatly appreciated means of expressing your remembrance of a loved one or friend. A suitable memorial donation card will be provided for mailing to the family in your name. These cards are available at the Rectory by contacting Ann Marie Cangelosi at 599-6414, Ext. 140, as well as at Flinch & Bruns and Perry’s Funeral Homes. The re-quested minimum donation is $25.00.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE ... Just a reminder, we still have food certificates available for our local supermarkets. Food certificates are the same as gift certificates, only they are for the supermarkets. We have them for Key Food, King Kullen, Best Market, Stop & Shop, Cross Island Fruits and CVS. Since you have to eat and feed your family, why not help your parish at the same time? It’s an even ex-change. If you give us $100, we give you $100 in food certifi-cates. They actually come in denominations from $5 up to $100. Spend whatever you wish. In turn, the supermarket will give us a 5% rebate. We have approximately 2,500 families in our parish. Can you imagine, if each family in our parish used these cer-tificates on a regular basis to do their food shopping, what the revenue could be? Our parish will receive 5% of the total amount of certificates you use. They don’t cost you anything more than what you would have spent at the store. You can get them at the Rectory, Monday through Friday from 9:30AM to 4:30PM and 6PM to 9PM. On Satur-day from 9:30M to 5:00PM and on Sundays, before or after you go to Mass from 9AM to 1PM. When purchasing them from the Rectory, you must pay by check only. They are also available during school hours at OLP School, which will accept cash or check.

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent

In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to use, we gratefully salute our Parish Social Ministry Holiday Volunteers.

Stewardship Thought for the Week St. Joseph is always a great example of how we should live our lives. Burdened by doubt, he was unaware of what he should do regarding Mary’s mysterious pregnancy. However, he was visited by an angel and told what God wanted him to do.

Parish Sacrificial Giving Collection information was not available at the time of this printing.

As always, thank you for your generosity to your parish.

SAD NEWS FROM THE CENACLE RETREAT CENTER

RONKONKOMA, NY After much prayer, dialogue and work with consult-ants, the Cenacle Sisters of the North American Province acknowledge, with deep sorrow, that they do not have the sister personnel and energy to continue their ministry at the Ronkonkoma Cenacle. Consequently, they need to bring their ministry, as we have known it , to a close by the end of August 2020 We all must take this opportunity to thank the sisters for their beautiful ministry which has helped so many through these many years. May God bless them always.
