Divine Mercy Sunday April 7, 2013

We just experienced Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter (the Triduum). It is like experiencing a series of major earth-quakes. Afterwards the landscape is changed, and nothing is the same again. The Triduum is a glimpse into the mystery of God and the mystery of evil. The curtain that hides the realm of spiritual warfare moves aside for a moment. Who can doubt the reality of evil when they hear the story of betrayal, denial, torture, corrupt trial, and cruel execution of Jesus? We see the forces of darkness playing on everyone’s weaknesses and sins, producing death, destruction and evil. Yet we also see also the extraordinary victory of God. Despite human sin, despite spiritual evil, LIFE triumphs, LOVE tri-umphs. Jesus forgives his tormentors, and continues to show concern for other people until his dying breath. And God brings about a great victory for LOVE in the Resurrection. Brothers and Sisters, this battle is still playing out in our own lives. The evil one is still urging us to abandon our intelli-gence and act foolishly and impulsively. The evil one still urges us to waver in our faith and betray God. The evil one still urges us to abandon love and to choose pride, hate and vengeance. Sometimes we fall for it, as Peter did, as Judas did, as Pilate did. But if we fall, the path of forgiveness and recon-ciliation is open to us. We do also experience the terrible consequences of other peo-ple’s sins in our lives--let no one deny that torture, death, and malicious lies still abound. Yet the other side of the battle, the side of God, is winning this war. We see each day a thousand gifts from God. The whole created world is a gift of goodness, a slap in the face of evil. We also see many acts of goodness and kindness in others: a person who helps the elderly across the street; a person who says a kindly word in the grocery store; a person who cares heroically for a sick spouse year after year. Each act of mercy is a blow against the forces of evil. We also see God at work in the Sacraments--his most usual way of giving us Himself--the Eucharist, Confession, Baptism, Anointing. And we ex-perience God in the community of the humble and the for-given. There are good angels around us, and each of us has a Guardian Angel. The spiritual battle is very fierce, and most of it we do not understand. But, because of the death and Resurrection of Christ, we know that God wins. Truth wins against the lies. Healing wins against destruction. Love wins against hate. In fact, LOVE has already won the war through the death and Resurrection of Our Lord. Let us cling to God in all our trials. Let us hold on to God. He will hold onto us. He is LOVE all the way through. And in the end, whatever evil throws at us, LOVE will win. Reflection by Dr. Sarah

CHÚ NHẬT 2 PHỤC SINH SCOND SUNDY OF STR

Rosary Walk by Sophia Marrero, OLPH School-Parish Liaison

It’s the 28th of March. The sky portrays a soft delicate blue that resem-bles the sea, with its white rolling waves and certain attitude of peace. That’s what we’re walking for, right? I don’t think there ever was a more perfect day to walk for peace among our world. We walk with brisk excitement to one of the higher points of the mount; we stop at a large tree with many magnificent rolls of amber bark. We each whisper the message of the rosary as it implants itself deeply in our hearts. This message of love should not end with the gates of the mount. We should take the lasting remembrance of Jesus and the rosary walk wherever we go. No matter how distant the memories of the Rosary Walk seem to be, always try to keep the lasting message of care for others deep in your heart no matter where you are.
