First Sunday of Advent NOVEMBER 27, 2011

YOU ARE POWERFUL Jesus tells a story today about a man who leaves home and puts his servants in charge, “each with his own work”. The man will come back, and check up to see what they have been doing. In a similar way, when Jesus comes again at the end with power and great glory, we will all give an account of ourselves, about our “own work”. One of the main things Jesus will ask us is how we treated our fellow “servants”. All of us have tre-mendous power. I am not just talking about legiti-mate authority over others (parents over children, supervisors over employees), but the personal power our behaviors, especially our words, have in other people’s lives. When we affirm someone and say they are doing a good job—whether or not we are their official su-pervisor—we will make them have a better day. When we smile and thank our husband or wife, or the man selling us coffee, or the commuter on the freeway, their day gets better at once! Try a little compliment here and there. WE ARE POWER-FUL! Sadly, some people—even our children—use words to bring others down. This is bullying. Usu-ally the bullies themselves are in pain or have a poor self-image. They imagine or invent all sorts of things about other people and taunt them in real life or on the Internet, call names or spread rumors which they have convinced themselves are true. If we are a supervisor or parent, we need to take appropriate action to correct the behavior. Face-book is not to insult people or spread gossip! Ver-bal assaults, gossip, lies and threats, especially if they are cloaked in “pious” language, cannot be permitted. When our children are the victims, we need to re-mind them that it is not their fault that someone is bullying them. It is the problem of the person try-ing to hurt them. Victims of bullying do need to separate themselves from the bully or bullies and not put themselves in harm’s way. Often they will need the help of a teacher or supervisor to make that possible. Yes, we are powerful. And the greatest power we have is not the power to hurt each other but the power to forgive from the heart. We free ourselves from the resentment. We break a chain of hate. If we forgive we exercise HUGE POWER, and be-come “children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.” (Luke 6:35) Reflection by Dr. Sarah

Sarah

CHUA NHẬT I MÙA VỌNG-B FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT-B

GREETING Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. PENITENTIAL ACT, FORM A I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels, all the Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. PENITENTIAL ACT, FORM B Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord. People: For we have sinned against you. Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. People: And grant us your salvation. PENITENTIAL ACT, FORM C Kyrie Eleison (Lord, have mercy) GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

DIALOGUE AT THE GOSPEL Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your Spirit. Deacon/Priest: A reading from the holy Gospel according to N. People: Glory to you, O Lord. People: And with your spirit. NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. for us men and our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
